This was a bloody fantastic movie

Although there were certainly enough shortfalls and problems to fill any number of foolish rant-critiques, the basic idea of the movie is what drew me in, personally.

The very concept of the last hours of humanity ... excites me, somehow, as if I wish it were already here so I could rest for awhile. Now, don't think of that last sentence as some emo/goth/suicidal "give-me-some-attention-or-i'll-cut-myself" spiel, but rather as a statement of the very human condition itself: Have you not been yearning for something? Have you not been wishing for some sort of conclusion to things? This movie, as simply another creation by humans, is of course imperfect in many ways, but it awakens certain thoughts which I, for one, have found latent for years now.

Just give it a chance, ignore the smut aspect of it, and think about what you would do if you knew everything would be over within the next day. Would you do your solemn duty like the gas company employee, or look for lots of sex, or simply take to the streets with a gun to revel in the slaughter? Myself, I would do none of the above. I would sit and meditate, and think about my life... and that's why I liked this movie so much: It made me think.

This is not the movie you think it is

The two earlier comments seem to be for the other movie Last Night (1998/I) directed by Don McKellar, and not this movie Last Night (1998/II) directed by Neil Kinsella. They refer to characters and events that are in Last Night (1998/I) but are not listed as characters in Last Night (1998/II).

I tried to find out more about this movie, but it seems to have faded into obscurity, so I'm unable to even read a summary of it. One other cinema site even put Neil Kinsella as a director of Don McKellar's film, which is not the case in the credits I saw in McKellar's film.

Although this is not strictly a review of Kinsella's film, I do feel that my comment is more informative and useful than the two previous comments, because it is actually about this film. Sort of.

Dreadfully dreary

Warning: Spoilers
This obviously caught a lot of attention and has received rave reviews from the majority I've read here, but I just don't see it. It's not just the different take, the character driven end and lack of Hollywood glitz, but it really lacks a spark somewhere and though I did enjoy it, much of it was like my take of a rainy day when one cannot seem to get off the couch.

For the viewer who didn't understand the AMC Pacer, perhaps I missed it, in not seeing any newer cars, but it seemed to take place in that era. For tedg, I for once agree in that there was not energy here for me save for anti-energy.

I must admit I was very tired when I watched this, falling asleep toward the end so I had to actually sit up from my reclined position, and maybe I will have to give it a second look (my sleep was just one of those head jerks though). I just don't see it as genius, more than a boring different take on a sometimes popular theme. While Armageddon certainly did not deserve a Criterion collection entry, there exist never a chance for this work, I should think.

**SPOILER** Oh, while I'm ranting, we should all realize why it is light at midnight, but unless it is between two converging stars, it is still dark on the other side of the planet unless light has shown some bend. ...and one last area before I shut my pie hole, I also have to agree with the dissenters who note that the characters are hardly fleshed out. I really did not care if any of them died at the end save for Sarah Polley 'cause she's just so attractive (yes, I know, how shallow of me, but oh well). I really am deeper than that though this movie is not.

I'll leave it at this since my fellow dissenters have their share of solid arguments already posted here...
