Twenty years ago, tween-girl cinema thrived. Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Amanda Bynes kicked off the junior rom-com eras -- bringing their Disney and Nickelodeon fans along for the ride. Big-screen coming-of-age stories, family sagas, and whimsical made-for-television movies defined youth culture in 2003. Pop music became more accessible to children. Bright colors and Y2K fashion arrived in full force. Kids were paying attention to the media and products advertised to them.
As a person who turned nine in '03, I vividly remember this era of family films. They were hopeful, playful, and rife with young characters seeking adventures. I'll never forget when my sister and I saw our first movies on DVD instead of VHS: "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" and "What a Girl Wants." For millennial fans, Hilary Duff's Italian excursion has been on repeat as a literal soundtrack of our lives. Amanda Bynes' British battle of the debutantes sharpened our rebellious side.

HBO Max is looking to play The Westing Game, by giving MGM/UA Television a script-to-series order for an adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning mystery novel.
Written by Ellen Raskin and first published in 1978, The Westing Game follows the bizarre chain of events that unfolds begins when 16 unlikely people gather for the reading of Samuel W. HBO Max has given a script-to-series order to an adaptation of the classic children’s novel “The Westing Game,” the streamer announced Wednesday.
No writer or director is attached to the project, but HBO Max, along with producers MGM Television and Julie Corman, is “currently interviewing” candidates.
First published in 1978, Ellen Raskin’s “The Westing Game” is described as an “ensemble mystery-comedy” surrounding the death of millionaire Samuel Westing. The reading of Westing’s will sets in motion a game for his sixteen heirs unlike any other, the winners of which will walk away with his $200 million fortune.
The novel won the John Newbury Award for children’s literature in 1979 and was ranked number one on the list of the top 100 children’s novels of all time by School Library Journal in 2012.
“The Westing Game” previously received the screen-adaptation treatment with a 1997 made-for-tv movie starring Ashley Peldon, Diane Ladd, Sally Kirkland...

This Home Before Dark review contains no spoilers.
Kids have been solving crimes in movies, books and TV shows for a long time, from Nancy Drew, Harriet The Spy and The Secret Seven to Lindsay Lohan vehicle Get A Clue. The major difference with Apple TV+’s 10-part new crime drama series Home Before Dark, is that our 9-year-old roving reporter, Hilde Lisko, who gets embroiled in solving a kidnapping and murder case, is based on an actual 9-year-old – Hilde Lysiak – who really did report on crime at such a young age.
What results is a slightly uncomfortable genre mix of kid-centric wish fulfillment and crime drama about a child-killer, complete with the dark color palette of a grown up murder series. Jon M. If Brenda Song wasn't on your radar before Secret Obsession debuted on Netflix, then we really need to talk. Ever since she stepped on the scene in 2002's Get a Clue (alongside fellow Disney queen Lindsay Lohan), she's had our hearts with her killer '00s fashion sense and iconic Disney Channel roles. She may be starring alongside Kat Dennings and Shay Mitchell as Madison Maxwell in Hulu's Dollface now, but we'll always remember her as Wendy Wu, London Tipton, and the best Pass the Plate host of all time. Let's take a walk down memory lane and revisit Brenda's early-'00s It girl days, shall we?

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Check here for more double feature recommendations and other Halloween 2017 coverage.]
There’s nothing quite like an outside threat to bring a family together, especially when that threat is of the undead variety. Siblings may not always get along, but when your sister’s soul is sought by a coven of witches, or when your mom is eyed as an eternal bride by a coffin-dwelling creep, it’s time to take those Sister Sledge lyrics to heart and become a family that can overcome anything—including wicked spells and sharp fangs. Set on respective fateful nights where the future of a homestead hangs in the balance and its up to siblings to save it, Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire and Hocus Pocus are family-friendly films that make for a great double feature during the Halloween season.

A few short weeks from now, when Paige VanZant or Wanyá Morris or Nyle Dimarco hoist that Mirrorball trophy in the air, Monday’s Switch-Up edition of Dancing With the Stars likely won’t be one of the Season 22 memories flashing before their eyes.
Although the traditional partner swap has worked wonders in past seasons, most of Monday’s mixed-up duos suffered from lack of chemistry, communication or — in a few disconcerting cases — proper choreography. (When TVLine compiles its year-end Best and Worst lists, you can expect to see Keo and Len’s Viennese Waltz debate somewhere in the “Most Cringeworthy Moments” section.

So, as you might have noticed, I've missed a couple of weeks. True to form, since I mentioned my on-again/off-again love/hate relationship with pro wrestling in my first column, I couldn't even work up enough inspiration to follow up my initial column on the subject. I was going to write about it every Wednesday night throughout the Road to WrestleMania, and my interest wasn't even sustained long enough to make it to Week 2.

Gotham Season 1, Episode 18: ‘Everyone Has A Cobblepot’
Written by Megan Mostyn-Brown
Directed by Bill Eagles
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
This week’s episode of Gotham follows up “Red Hood” just after Alfred’s wounding, which brings a reunion between Gordon and Bruce. But instead of progressing Bruce’s story, this episode prolongs their separation again for another week so that Gordon can make some genuine headway in establishing some order within the Gcpd. This has been an ongoing process for Gordon in making a change to the corrupt system, and his effect on it has been gradual, as every time Gordon thinks he has made a significant achievement, he finds that he has only cured a symptom and not the cause. This has been a beat that Gotham has repeated a few times during this second half of the season, and it’s almost to the point of being overly repetitive,...

For a very specific demographic, the ultimate news was just announced: Lindsay Lohan will appear on Watch What Happens Live! The episode will air next Thursday, April 17, EW has confirmed.
“This one is a long time coming. We love Lindsay and plan to celebrate the s@%# out of her!” host/executive producer Andy Cohen told E!.
Fans of the show know this has the potential to be quite the memorable episode. Not only is the live program proudly booze-soaked (a tradition they will obviously (right?) forgo for the evening), but the program’s cheeky charm thrives on Cohen asking the guests just-this-side-of-inappropriate questions.

It’s not just a matter of the recent spat between Castle and Alexis over the ubiquitous Pi which then led to Alexis telling her dad to give her some space. Nor Alexis’s insistence that she’s ready to move out of the familial home into one of her own (well, with Pi, that is). Like Father, Like Daughter also dealt with the hinted-at coolness between Beckett and Alexis, a recurrent theme in series 4 when Beckett was shot, making the teenager forcefully aware of the danger her father’s relationship with the detective puts him in.
In this week’s episode, Alexis is all but forced to go to her father for assistance...

Review Laura Akers 4 Nov 2013 - 06:58
Maturity and adulthood are the themes of this week's Castle. Here's Laura's review of Get A Clue...
This review contains spoilers.
6.6 Get a Clue
In last week’s episode, we saw the usual tension between Castle’s far-flung imagination and Beckett’s no-nonsense explanation. In most episodes, the truth is either somewhere in the middle between Castle’s theory of the crime and Beckett’s (usually favoring Beckett’s version) or clearly unrelated to both. In the first case, this allows Castle to maintain his position as crazy narrative smith without invalidating Beckett’s more pedestrian explanation (or vice versa). In the latter, both are clearly wrong, meaning neither is actually right, which likewise maintains the balancing act between two very strong characters.
What almost never happens is that Castle pretty much nails it out of the gate. Well, okay, at first he says...

Could this be Castle's favorite case ever? The "Get a Clue" episode of "Castle" brings shades of "Indiana Jones," "The Da Vinci Code" and "National Treasure" to a New York murder. Is there a buried treasure? A vast conspiracy?
Find out in this recap.
Discord in the house of Pi
But before Castle can have his treasure-hunting fun, he has to deal with the unpleasantness of his daughter and her fruitarian beau.
Alexis and Pi have moved in together and are happily living the Bohemian lifestyle, dumpster-diving for furniture and chasing bees for profit. Of course, Castle isn't too happy about the fact that his daughter has moved in with an idiot.
Too bad for Castle that this is half about Alexis feeling the need to punish her dad for diving into an engagement with Beckett. Because Castle didn't wholeheartedly approve of Pi (and seriously, who would?), Alexis has now...

This week’s episode of Castle wasn’t an invaluable bag of half-dimes, but it wasn’t a sack of coal either.
I open with that distinction because it seems as if all-day Monday, ever since the episode aired in Canada, I was tweeted at about how “crappy,” “Jump the Shark”-caliber and “ham-handed” this week’s episode would be. As such, despite the best efforts, a person goes into a viewing experience with certain (in this case, negative) expectations.

After five plus season’s of his hit ABC series, one would have thought Castle is used to seeing the worst of the worst that New York city has to offer. So just what on earth happens during tonight’s episode to illicit such mortified-beyond-words looks from both Castle and Mama Castle?! Well, it probably has something to do with daughter/grand daughter Alexis’ new living arrangements! But hey, don’t take our word for it, see for yourself what tonight’s episode, appropriately titled “Get A Clue,” has in store after the jump.

Rick Castle finally got the time traveling killer he'd been hoping for in "Time Will Tell."
Below, TV Fanatics Jim Garner, Chandel Charles and Christine Orlando are joined by Angie of the Castle Fan Forum the 12th to debate time travel aspects of this episode, Alexis' future, and what we'd name Castle and Beckett's future children...
-------------------------------------------
Do you believe in the time traveling killer or a more logical explanation?
Jim: I loved that this week's case could actually have a non-logical explanation. After five years of crazy theories, Rick was due for a win - and what a great one it was!
Chandel: I would like to believe in a more logical explanation, but a little imagination never hurt anybody.
Angie: What I love about Castle is that there is always a logical explanation with just the hint that it maybe-kinda-coulda been something else, which is how I usually approach these kinds of mysteries.

Castle went all sci-fi on viewers this week, dealing with a killer who claimed to also be a time traveler.
Next Monday, meanwhile, the show will once again travel to the future - but in a different sort of way.
Yes, Halloween will arrive a few days early on this ABC smash, with Castle and Beckett looking into the strange murder of a young woman they find ritually posed, a collection of odd symbols strewn about her apartment.
Look for the main suspect to be a mysterious monk and for Castle (of course) to be convinced that the team has come across some kind of DaVinci Code-style conspiracy.
Check out the official promo for this Castle Season 6 episode below, followed by a number of photos from "Get a Clue" that feature Rick, Alexis and Pi:

"Time Will Tell" continued one of Castle's best season to date. It was classic Castle with a sci-fi twist, some Casketty future goodness and a father/daughter moment that broke my heart.
Let's start with the sci-fi…
Castle finally got his time traveling killer. Simon Doyle was exuberant and determined enough to sell his story, yet crazy enough to make me question it too.
The thought of future Energy Wars was just believable enough to be scary and I appreciated Castle asking the questions about the butterfly effects of changing the time stream and Doyle's explanation that while some minor changes were self-correcting, others could undeniably change the future.
As usual, Beckett was the skeptic but I liked that. Someone has to look at the evidence logically and not get swept up in the fanciful theories. As a cop, that's her job. I was relieved when Beckett pointed out that...

Let's be real -- anyone who walks around with a big, frightening gun in public, fake or real, is stupid. They're stupid and insensitive and frankly, something about those actions say a lot about that person's reasoning abilities. ... Like, you know, that they have none. Soulja Boy recently tweeted this photo of himself holding some kind of awful-looking gun in the back of a vehicle, and if that's the kind of thing that makes a person "cool," then who really knows -- one might suppose that this kind of thinking is what's poisoning people's minds day in and day out. And no, I don’t mean that in the vampire sense. Conservative rocker Ted Nugent believes the Newtown, Conn., shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School is a result of pervasive "spiritual bankruptcy" and "political correctness" in American culture.
Nugent penned a response to the Sandy Hook shooting, which left six school employees and 20 children dead, in an editorial for The Washington Times. In the piece, Nugent shifts blame from lax gun control, poor mental health programs, inadequate security at schools and violence in the media to the moral decay of society.
Via the Washington Times:
The ugly and dangerous truth is that we live in an embarrassing, politically correct culture that exalts and rejoices in the bizarre; aggressively promotes an “anything goes” value system; and vilifies, condemns and mocks traditional societal values and customs at every opportunity.
We’ve embraced a culture of contempt that attacks the very institutions that make for a healthy and strong society, and then we’re...

NBC Sports veteran Bob Costas has sparked a controversy following comments he made during the "Sunday Night Football" halftime show in the wake of Saturday's disturbing murder-suicide committed by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher.
Speaking in his regular 90-second commentary slot, Costas quoted and paraphrased a column by Fox Sports' Jason Whitlock, closing with this line: "But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."
Apparently, that made some people upset.
Both because Costas said it during a football game (the nerve!) and he implied that if you don't own or have access to a gun, it's a lot more difficult to shoot other people or yourself (what twisted logic!).
Great thinkers of our time like Herman Cain and Ted Nugent took to Twitter to voice their objections:

NBC's Bob Costas used his halftime segment during "Sunday Night Football" to lobby for stronger gun-control laws following the alleged murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher -- and Ted Nugent was not impressed.
During his halftime segment, Costas stated that if Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins (the girlfriend and mother of their newborn son), who he allegedly killed, would both be alive today.
These claims didn't sit well with the always outspoken and right-wing singer, who took to Twitter to express his vehement opposition to Costas' comments, slamming the sportscaster for blaming guns for the tragedy.
"We thought Bob Costas was smarter than that. Only fools blame tools instead of human failings. Shame Bob. Blaming guns for crime is like blaming helmuts for headbutts. Wtf Costas! Uve lost it," Nugent wrote in a series of tweets, adding:

Troyzan goes a bit crazy in the wake of figuring out the women are running the show on "Survivor: One World."
In the wake of Jay's blindside at Tribal, Troy is rightly very nervous. He knows he's next if he doesn't win Immunity. Weirdly, the one he attacks is Christina - like she's the only person who voted a certain way, or the mastermind.
The girls tell him not to attack her, and that makes him even more defensive. Alicia doesn't need to get into it with him, but he really is being pretty snotty towards to Christina.
Then the next morning, Troyzan just marches up and gets in Chelsea's face. He thinks it's unfair to keep other people over him. Chelsea rightly points out that it's a game - dude, you're a threat. You're likable, you're not crazy (so far) and you're a threat to win challenges. Don't talk about "deserving" to be there.

A lot of people on Tumblr were So Excited after this episode because Adam and Cassie shared a kiss. But hello! Diana and Cassie have been sharing a bed for weeks! In fact, in the very first scene, Diana comes into the bedroom with nothing but a robe on and says, "You're in the same position you were as when I woke up." Which, in the original language, means, "Honey, I loved waking you up and trying that new position."
Cassie is still kind of worried about her dark magic after getting buried and left for dead by Diana's grams, but Diana is there for her.
Oh, yeah. I think she's coming. In fact, things get so hot Diana's dress catches fire. Which, if you looked closely at that dress, is a blessing.
Later, when Adam asks Cassie to go to the Fire and Ice dance (moment of...
