Sex & Nudity

  • Many consider the Chun Li character to be the very first sex symbol in 1990s gaming, with her rather revealing outfit below her blue qipao. Even her roundhouse kick will unintentionally expose her buttocks clad in bronze tights and a blue thong leotard.

Violence & Gore

  • The game is centered on a street fighting tournament, plenty of attacks involving non-stop martial arts and one stage with weapon violence is shown throughout.
  • Characters fight each other with fists, feet, and special moves until one is knocked unconscious.
  • Powerful hits to the lower stomach can cause the opposing character to vomit, sometimes vomiting blood.
  • When Blanka and/or Zangief initiates the Head Bite attack, blood can be seen being shed from his mouth.
  • At the end of a match, the defeated player's character's avatar is seen beaten up, with bruises, bumps, cuts and blood on their face.

Profanity

  • In the Japanese version of the game, one of Vega's (Balrog in Japan) win quotes are "The weak will burn in Hell!! For the strong are always beautiful!", this was cut out of the overseas releases of the game.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character in the background of Zangief's stage is seen swigging from a bottle over and over. It can be implied that some kind of liquor is in the bottle.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The end of every match involves realistic portraits of each street fighter who loses the tournament with bloody and bruised faces, this was later under censorship in the Super Famicom/Nintendo and Game Boy ports.
