The Drunk Act
With Chaplin mania at its height, Vitagraph finally decided they wanted one too, so they dragged Karno veteran Jimmy Aubrey out of a vaudeville house, stuck a derby and toothbrush mustache on him and had him do the drunk from "Mumming Birds" under the direction of Larry Semon.
There's some nice ornamentation to it, as the unnamed cameraman places his camera on a gimbal, Semon adds some animation for comic delerium tremens, and a burglar shows up to trigger off a bout of Keystone Koppery.
Since Aubrey was a Chaplin imitator at this point, the question is how does he do as one? Not very well, but he is fine as a Karno drunk.
Those who wish to compare the fine points of Karno alumni might wish to look at this after Chapln's ONE A.M. and Stan Laurel's PIE-EYED. I don't know if Will Hay ever did the drunk for the camera.
