More like a documentary
holloriese28 October 2011
This film reminds me of those history documentaries where they re-enact certain scenes between the narrations. The subtitles are very long, sometimes even two or three in a row, and contain very little direct speech. Instead the subtitles seem to explain the overall events and the historical backgrounds, sometimes with the exact given date, so I was able to follow the film with the Wikipedia article of Karadjordje on the side to fully understand what was going on. At the end, they even show how Karadjordje got honored after his death, e.g. the unveiling of a monument; the film finally takes on a documentary style.

Kind of funny is the very end, where the director and some of the actors actually take bows to the audience.

Must-see history action material
bogi_evra10 March 2006
In a word, this movie rocks... Great camera (for the time), exciting shots, interesting sound...I don't even need to mention awesome acting.

If you're Karadjordje fan you already know the plot but if you're not here's the deal - Karadjordje is back and he's ready to kick some Ottoman ass!! Action, adventure and romance that will take you back in the crazy 1800's in Serbia. If you're tired of this modern, pompous fancy directing, take a look at the old school style of Ilija Stanojevic Cica and enjoy some genuine mastery.

Don't be misguided by the fact that this movie was made in 1911. Modern people can also relate to its sophisticated suggestions and timeless plot lines like fighting for freedom (or fighting terrorism) and such.

Once again, this movie is a jewel and its the ultimate must-see for every Karadjordje fan, but also for everybody else.

No sound!

You cant hear the dialogue of the characters in the movie because there's basically no sound! The movie on its own is also very boring and the camera is yellowish with black spots showing up constantly. Please try to avoid this soundless movie.

zajebancija1613 March 2006
Well I'm not sure that the guy that gave above recension actually have ever seen the movie. C'mon people sound in movie from 1911!? There is a quote, from site which you will get if u try google search with: "first sound movie" and i feel lucky option!

"1902 -- 1926: The era of the silent film while inventors including Edison sought to link sound mechanically with moving film images. "

Guess everything else in the comment stands right. Great documentary and definitely a wonderful experience for any Karadjordje's fan, or every other person. I'm happy to recommend this movie to anyone who is able to find it especially for people who are in to documentary movies or Karadjordje's fans.

Black George review
JoeytheBrit16 May 2020
An 80-minute feature film made four years before D.W. Griffith popularised the format in 1915 - and it's from, of all places, the cinematic backwoods of Serbia. Only 59 minutes (found in a Viennese archive in 2003 after having been considered lost for 75 years) survive today. It tells the story of a national hero who led a rebellion against Serbia's Turkish rulers in the early years of the 19th Century. The standard of the filmmaking is primitive even by the standards of 1911, and merely presents a series of events rather than any meaningful narrative. We might know the key incidents from Karadjordje's life by the movie's end, but we're none the wiser about the man himself.
