"Water for Maya" is a 2.5-minute short film that American filmmaker Stan Brakhage made at the very end of his long and extremely prolific career. It is a tribute to Maya Deren and I somewhat liked how blue, refreshing and almost splashy this little movie looked. I wish he could have been like that in many of his other works. That said, I am still not a great fan of Brakhage's style and I would not say I really enjoyed this movie. It was just superior to 90% of his other works. Maya Deren obviously did not live to see it, but it's also really more for Brakhage making a tribute to somebody that inspired him I guess. And as such, it was a success. Still, it's only easy to appreciate if you like Brakhage's approach to film in general and overall, I have to give it a thumbs down. I still believe it may be a good pick to start a bit into the filmmaker's immense body of work.
