Sex & Nudity

  • There are two instances of innuendos. Neither of which are graphic/explicit.
  • A woman wears a dress that shows a lot of cleavage.
  • A woman says, "There are three things I would do for you if you come and jump into bed with me right now."
  • Meg is lying in a bathtub full of water. She is seen from her shoulders and up.

Violence & Gore

  • A man gets his fingers caught in a slamming metal door for a long period of time, we hear a loud snap and he screams very loudly. Blood streams down the door and blood is all over his clothes. He is later seen picking up two of his fingers.
  • One of the robbers is an inherently violent man and commits violent acts unexpectedly, and seems to have no moral conscience.
  • One of the intruders gets badly burned. His arm is shown on fire as he tries to extinguish the flame. His face is badly burned. These injuries, of course, remain in view until he leaves the story, and he is shown to be in unbelievable pain.
  • A man is shot in the head with such force he spins around before hitting the ground. Blood spurts. The bullet leaves a gaping hole over his eye with a thick blood gush.
  • There is an extended sequence in which a character is brutally beaten and kicked until he is a bloody mess with a broken arm. He is at one point knocked out, and shown in great pain again when he tries to use his arm and is knocked out of his chair.
  • In self-defense, a man is shot through the head, the bullet comes out his eye with a lot of blood spray.
  • There are numerous threats of violence (apart from those actually carried out) against a man, woman, and child as well as against the invaders.

Profanity

  • 5 or 10 uses of "dick"
  • A couple uses of the f-word by a child
  • 76 uses of the F-word.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • To cope with her divorce, Meg drinks wine and admits it later on to a police officer.
  • A diabetic gets an injection.
  • In two scenes, a man takes what is presumably cocaine hits from a glass pipe.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The prolonged one-take camera move that introduced the three burglars as they try to find an entry point into the house is unsettling.
  • The entirety of this film is a sensational, but believable portrait of a home invasion by three men in search of hidden money. The men had not planned on hurting anyone and, as we soon discover, they thought the house was vacant, but near the end, the situation becomes increasingly violent, homicidal and intense. One of the men is shown to be completely cold-blooded with a psychotic temper, and another shows little regard for human life.
  • A diabetic has a convulsing reaction to a drop in her blood sugar and waits a long time for an injection while claiming that without it she will go into a coma and die.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • In self-defense, a woman hits one of the intruders in the face with a sledgehammer and he falls over a railing. He comes after her as another man shoots at him. He knocks the wind out of her and begins throttling her on the floor. The woman's daughter begins stabbing the attacker in the back with empty syringes and he punches the daughter in the nose. As the girl screams in horror, the attacker attempts to bash the woman's head in with the sledge hammer but she is rescued before this happens.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The mother's realisation that the house has been invaded and her subsequent attempt to wake her daughter and then make it to the panic room while being pursued by the burglars is quite intense and frightening.
  • Using ominous dialogue, a criminal implies he's going to kill a pre-teen girl because she saw his face (but he never ends up being able to try).
