Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.
Dr. Hibbert was kindly, bemused, but possessed of a strangely cold bedside manner. When Bart comes to see Dr.

Even as the Edinburgh International Film Festival presses ahead up north, the nation’s capital is not – and never has been – content to sit complacent on the cinematic front. Awards to dish out include Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film and the Eeff Short Film Audience Award, from an eclectic jury that features the likes of the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, Wu-Tang Clan head honcho RZA, and Armando Bo, winner of last year’s Best Film Award for his directorial debut El Ultimo Elvis.

Bbxx By Jerry Scott and Rick Kirkman 335 pages, Andrews McMeel Publishing, $35 In the early days of 1990, a brand new comic strip debuted, perfect for parents of young children and universal in its humor. Now in its 23rd year, Andrews McMeel recently celebrated the success with the release of Bbxx: Baby Blues Decades 1 & 2. Unlike a lot of strip collections, this comes with extensive commentary from both creators, annotating and riffing on what prompted particularly strips, gags, characters, and visuals. As a result, this becomes an interesting look back at the development and evolution of a strip that went from two parents and an infant to a five-member family. Eight cartoonists have been visiting with American troops recovering from action-related injuries at both Washington’s Walter Reed Hospital and at German’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
According to a report from Stars and Stripes, Chip Bok (editorial cartoonist at Akron Beacon-Journal), Jeff Keane (Family Circus), Rick Kirkman (Baby Blues), Mike Peters (Mother Goose & Grimm), Mike Luchovich (editorial cartoonist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Walt Handlesman (editorial cartoonist for Newsday), Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine), and Tom Richmond (Mad Magazine) have been traveling together along with military artists and others.
The National Cartoonist Society members broke in to groups and scoured the wards, sitting beside soldiers and sketching away, often doing caricatures as they chatted and presenting them as tokens of appreciation.
"You guys are awesome," Jesse Stephenson said upon receiving a drawing. "You guys are awesome."
"You’re awesome," Peters told him in return.
