After decades of working to interest advertisers in the Masters, NCAA March Madness, Sunday NFL games and, most recently, Super Bowl Lviii, John Bogusz has thrown his last pass to Madison Avenue,
The CBS Sports ad-sales chief, who has been at the Paramount Global-backed network for more than 26 years, is expected to leave his role as executive vice president of sports sales following one more NCAA tournament and Masters golf competition, according to an internal memo reviewed by Variety. “Bogie,” as he is commonly known among staffers, buyers and clients, departs at a moment of transition for the sports operations at CBS. Sean McManus, the long-serving chairman of the sports business is also stepping away.
Bogusz’ exit comes after CBS orchestrated a record-setting ad haul for Super Bowl Lviii — more than $600 million, goosed in part by the match between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs going into overtime.

Chilean writer-actor-director Bernardo Quesney does not have all the answers. If he did, he says, he would not be making films. “If someone is very clear about what they mean or intend to mean,” he told Variety, “they should write an essay, not a script.”
Quesney’s third feature, “History and Geography,” is screening in the Works in Progress sidebar at this year’s Guadalajara Film Festival. It tells the story of Gioconda Martinez, an aging actor from an iconic theatrical family, who is trying to shake the comedic image that became glued to her when she starred in a highly successful TV series. Now, she wants to be taken seriously. She returns to her hometown to stage a play about the Mapuche, an indigenous people who were abused not only by the Spanish conquerors but by more modern-day Chileans, as well. To her chagrin, she quickly discovers that her...

Amara La Negra has a magnetic quality that’s followed her from her days as a child performer on the famed Spanish-language variety show Sábado Gigante to VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: Miami, where she quickly became a breakout star. When she talks, people tend to listen — and she’s continually made it a point to use her voice to bring complex issues to the forefront, including anti-Blackness in the Latinx community, the pernicious colorism embedded in the entertainment industry, and body image pressures exacerbated because of social media. While...

You may know Noemí González as Soli Gomez from East Los High or Mia Rosales from The Young and the Restless, but you'll soon get to see her on the drums as Suzette Quintanilla in Netflix's Selena: The Series. That's right - the 32-year-old Mexican actress will be starring as the sister of late Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla, and she's well aware of how big of a feat that is.
While speaking with Popsugar, González recalled the moment she found out she booked the part, saying she was at home when she got the call from her reps. "I was laying down and my body jumped up . . . and I was like, 'I'm sorry, what?' I just remember really enjoying having that personal moment of, 'Oh my God, did this just happen?' And processing it on my own," González said. "Then, I went to celebrate with a...

Univision's longest-running program, the magically campy variety show Sábado Gigante, will end on September 19 — after airing every Saturday night for the last 53 years. Mario Kreutzberger will officially retire from his "role" as host Don Francisco, after interviewing everyone from Selena to Michelle Obama (not to mention segments like "El Detector De Mentiras," in which Don gives lie-detector tests to cheaters). Good-bye Sábado Gigante! We'll always have this performance of "Gangnam Style":...

It’ll be a special “Sábado Gigante” tonight.
Univision’s variety show celebrates its 50th anniversary Saturday. The three-hour show has aired continuously since 1962, when its iconic host “Dan Francisco” launched it as “Sábados Gigantes” in Chile -- earning it’s place as the longest-running television show in the Guiness Book of World Records. Univision acquired the program in 1986 and brought it to Miami.
For the uninitiated, NPR’s Mandalit del Barco proffered a good description of the cooky program:
For half a century, Sábado Gigante has been a raucous romp, with hours and hours of musical guests and dancers. It's a variety show; it's a talk show; it's a game show. Think Price Is Right meets American Idol meets The Gong Show. Francisco has his regular sidekicks, like "La Cuatro," who gets slapped for being naughty and sings very badly, and a masked character known as "El Chacal," the jackal.

CBS has inked talent holding deals with Latina actresses Lourdes Colon and Veronica Diaz, both discovered in CBS' second Latino/Hispanic Talent Showcase in October, which the network held in association with the Nosotros organization, SAG and AFTRA. The network will try to cast the two actresses in pilots targeted for fall. Colon's performance at the showcase already earned her a guest spot on CBS' drama Without a Trace. She is repped by manager Stacey Pokluda at Hype Entertainment and Jim Kellem at JKA Talent & Literary Agency. CBS vp casting Fern Orenstein called Diaz "a unique talent that can work successfully in a drama or comedy." Argentina-born Diaz has a background in acting, singing and dancing. Her first high-profile gig after relocating to Miami was on Univision's top-rated variety show Sabado Gigante. Her credits also include the indie Vatos. Diaz is repped by David Feldman of Bloom, Hergot & Diemer and managers Vince Lazzo and Armando Trejo of Conquest Talent Entertainment.
