Donkey Kong Country rules!
The_Wagon24 May 2006
This game is awesome! It's fun, challenging, addictive, and it stars our favorite monkey in gaming: Donkey Kong! One night, Donkey Kong's bananas are stolen, and it's up to him and Diddy Kong to get them all back. It's a side-scrolling plat-former for Super Nintendo, and is also on Game Boy Color and Game Boy Color. When a game has been remade twice, you know it's classic! Super Mario Bros. was remade a number of times, and it's still a classic just like Donkey Kong Country. The Game Boy Advance version's graphics aren't that good compared to the Super Nintendo version, or even the Game Boy Color version, but on Game Boy Advance is still a fun and addictive game for fans of the original. 8/10.

The Best out of all three, One of the Best Games I've Ever Played Since Childhood
tequila10110 August 2010
When the Original Donkey Kong Country came up, It was a very playable game and I've stuck with since the day I was born. Donkey Kong is a sleep and the Kremlins take away his Banana hoard. The next day Doneky & Diddy vow vengeance to get their hoard back.

The Game is very basic and if you are really good at it, you'll complete the game in an hour. I love the environments that you roam around through from snow mountains to dirty factories.

It also contains animal buddies to ride, brutal bosses to verse and memorable themes DKC offers a wide range of game play for any fans who are an old fan of old game play.

I suggest you play this game, it will be the best game you ever play. 9.7/10

Very Good But Difficult Game
gangstahippie30 July 2006
Rated E.

I own the Game Boy Color Version of Donkey Kong Country.I first played the game at my friends house and I liked it a lot.The first game I got for my Game Boy Color was Pokemon Silver Version. This was the second game I got.I hardly play my Game Boy Color anymore but I do sometimes.Donkey Kong is my favorite character in the Mario series.Whenever there is a Mario game like Diddy Kong Racing or Super Smash Bros where you can choose your character I always choose Donkey Kong.I don't know why but he is my favorite character.I remember when I was in Grade 1 my favorite show was the animated Donkey Kong Country which played on teletoon.Donkey Kong Country the game was very fun but hard.Sure all the levels in the first stage were easy but after that it got harder.Stage 2 level 15 was extremely hard and I had to get a friend to beat it for me.As of now I am on a level in Stage 3 but I stopped playing it because it was too hard.Donkey Kong Country was a really fun game though with pretty good graphics for the gameboy and fun gameplay. You can choose between Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong and you basically jump on baddies and collect different things like bananas. If you find Donkey Kong Country play it! You wont regret it!

Let Me explain
Quinoa198430 July 2000
This is my favorite video game of all time. It has been apart of my childhood since I was 10 (it was released in 1994, do the math) and even though technology might've been increased, I will always have this game in my heart. It is a brilliant achievment in Super Nintendo terms (which is now obsolete) by bringing the famous game chimp to 32-bit 3-d life and it is a lot of fun. It is above on my list of all games, even mario, as a adventure RPG game by having challenges and twists at every turn (not to mention a not too bad story). Remarkable. A++

Blast Off!
RiffRaffMcKinley10 August 2007
A trilogy of enormously fun video games gets its start in this tale of friendship, danger, and stolen fruit.

It all starts when the villainous King K. Rool and his vicious band of Kremling henchmen steal the Kong Family's huge banana hoard. This behavior, of course, is downright evil. So Donkey Kong sets out with his best friend, Diddy Kong, to bring an end to K. Rool's reign of terror and return their bananas to their rightful place (a little cave in the first level, Kongo Jungle).

With the help of animals like Rambi the Rhino, Enguarde the Swordfish, Expresso the Ostrich, and Winky the Frog, Donkey and Diddy travel across all sorts of terrain from Ewok villages to crumbling Roman temples just to fight this evil force. The graphics, though not startlingly good, hold up quite well after thirteen years, and this film still holds this reviewer in fervent interest... just as it has since childhood. "Donkey Kong Country" is a must not just for gamers, but for any fans of genuine, unpretentious action and adventure.

A revolutionary masterpiece!
reddragonhero1721 May 2014
I first stumbled upon this game at Sears 20 years ago and it has stuck with me ever since. The amazing 3D graphics blew me away the first time I saw it and I new immediately that I had to play it. I played horribly at first, but that helped keep my enjoyment up. Now I own it and still love it. Everything about it shines even to this day the graphics, the music, the gameplay. Even after I beat it I keep wanting to come back to it. I haven't found all the secrets, but no matter, that helps keeps things enjoyable. I even love using DK's groud slap attack which makes defeating enemies (except for a few) more satisfying than either rolling or jumping on them. Favorite stages? One of them is the one with the mine carts and the level known as Barrel Cannon Canyon with plenty of blasting, stomping, and everything else. Thank you Rare!

The best game ever made...
amonem7 June 2007
I will not lose my words on this...

This game is my favourite game (though on 32 bit SNES system, but when I was a kid, we all had them - the game was released when I was 6) I got this game for my 8th birthday and I never really stopped playing it...now that I don't have a SNES no more, I play it on PC with (thanks to people who made emulators, or I would probably never play this game again) Emulators...

The gameplay is extremely fun, once you finish the game, you will go over and over again... Graphics and music are the best ever made for Super Nintendo.

This is a ''must play'' video game, for all the great gamers

Still so much fun you'll go bananas! (Groan!)
Foreverisacastironmess12331 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Ah, I remember very fondly this humble tale of a gorilla and a monkey who take a trip to retrieve a bunch of bananas from a gang of thieving lizards... This game has a very special place in my heart, and I can remember like yesterday how I felt as a kid when I first played this on the precious console that was the SNES. I was so enchanted with the rich catchy music and blown away by the unbelievable visuals and addictive game-play, it was all very lighthearted and wholesome great gaming fun. It pushed the graphical limitations of the Super Nintendo to their absolute limits and it still looks amazing to me. How it looked was the first thing to jump out at anyone who played it for the first time. The character sprites were nicely detailed and brightly coloured and well shaded, and they had brilliant animations to their movements. The way the artwork was stylised into both the backgrounds and the foregrounds was utterly gorgeous and the overall effect was that the stage environments had a style that was somewhat realistic and cartoony at the same time. And what really made the game great and special wasn't just how fantastic the pre-rendered graphics looked, it played as amazing as it looked and had a sense of rhythm to its game-play. Many of the obstacles and enemies had a distinctly bouncy rubber feel, and they were laid out in such a way that it encouraged the player to take advantage of that trait, like there was a specific timing to stomping your enemies, thanks to deliberate placing and level design. And thee was a strong sense of variety to the levels, and they had a tough but fair difficulty curve, with some of the later stages like "Black Out Basement" and "Snow Barrel Blast" being extremely tricky to get through. Good luck in trying not to throw your controller across the room during the whole ice zone! And not only were the water levels a joy to play but they were beautiful to look at, in "Coral Capers" you could really lose yourself in that wondrous "aquatic ambiance." Donkey Kong Country had a game-play design that felt unique and intricate, it was fast paced yet strangely mellow all at once, and it all made for some superb platforming, and it felt like a big leap forward at the time. I could make it all the way to the final showdown that is both comical and more challenging than it first appears, where you face the big fat crocodile pirate king of the Kremlins King K. Rool atop his galleon! Just barrels of fun and endearing charm, it's what made Donkey King into a beloved iconic game character and to me the atmosphere and magic of the game-play hasn't changed a bit, to this day it stands as an awesome and masterful platforming classic. One of the SNES's finest! And also, Happy New Year everyone! :) X

The wonderful beginning of the saga of the most famous ape in Videogames
marumivaldez5 April 2020
Donkey kong country is an excellent game to start a great saga.

David Wise's music is amazing like: Aquatic ambiece, Boss battle music, Jungle groove and many, the music makes you go deeper into the level.

The levels are excellent, in each level you have to pass the level but sometimes it is like Temple Tempest that you followed a normal path but the wheels chase you as if you were in Indiana Jones and the hunters of the lost Ark or Mine cart madness and a long list of levels that are amazing.

RARE knew how to make a good start to the saga of the most famous ape in video games.

Showcasing The SNES
zkonedog13 March 2017
There is no question that "Donkey Kong Country" is one of the best adventure games ever created on any platform. It was easily better than any Mario game the SNES put out and really raised the bar for what side-scrolling games could do. One can have hours of fun immersed in the DK world. The only problem? Hours of gnashed teeth will also be spent re-beating levels because of the stupid saving mechanism.

The best part of the "DK Country" experience is that it is so unique. It was kind of like playing a Mario game...but with new challenges and characters. I liked how Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong both had unique abilities better suited for certain situations, making you (the gamer) figure out when to use each character. The game is also quite challenging, but not to the breaking point. After enough practice, most levels can be beaten before the hair-pulling stage. It terms of gameplay and presentation, this is a 5-star effort all the way.

The HUGE negative? Having to beat multiple levels before being able to save a game. Now, I realize that I have reviewed many NES games and never complained about the saving, but that was because the NES technology just did not allow for "anytime saving". By the time the SNES came around, though, one could have saved the game after every level. However, the game designers decided to make you "earn" save points by beating a number of levels at a time. In the beginning this is fine, as you whip through the levels and pile up the bananas/balloons without hardly a second thought. Once you get to the ice-levels stage, though, the game requires you to beat 4-5 extremely difficult levels before saving is possible. By this time in the game, the player is operating on more like a 4-5 turn basis per lifespan. I realize the "collecting bananas and trying to get specials" argument for racking up multiple lives, but that isn't why I wanted to play the game. I just want to beat each level and move onto the next without all the "monkey business" (pardon the pun). This issue decreases the whole experience for me by an entire star.

Thus, "Donkey Kong Country" is a classic in the canon of video game adventures. A very frustrating save mechanism does put a damper on the experience for all but the experts, but overall it is still a fun game.

Kong's '90s comeback
Mr-Fusion27 February 2023
For "Donkey Kong Country", it's (nearly) all about presentation; the 2D graphics polished with 3D textures; it features some of the best music you'll hear in a Super NES game; and it's just a really fun platformer. And I have never been good at this particular genre, so it was often maddeningly difficult. It's not always as simple as run-and-jump; there's precision timing, level memorization and a generous supply of patience required. The programmers really do throw you some curveballs, and some levels are genuine endurance tests (looking at you, Snow Barrel Blast). Others are just exciting; Tree Top Town has that Ewok village vibe, and I love it.

But even if you hate playing it, you'll love the soundtrack. There's a reason Aquatic Ambiance is still being played today, and Rare really knew how to mitigate the occasional difficulty spike with some unbelievably chill music. On this particular playthrough, I found myself getting mad pretty often, yet I kept coming back. There's just something about this game.

False advertising. There's no country music in it.
McFrogg5 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
You play as the tie wearing gorilla Donkey Kong and his monkey sidekick Diddy Kong. The evil crocodile King K. Rool and his Kremlings have stolen King Kong's bananas and placed them in various places on the island. You have to jump, swing, roll, and climb your way to the end of each level, where there's always a boss waiting for you. You can also ride on various animals. A rhino, ostrich, sword fish and even a giant frog!

There's one stage that's right out of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where you ride a mine cart and have to jump over dangerous obstacles. I remember how hard that stage was, and how relieved my brother and I felt when we finally managed to beat it. It's probably the hardest part in the whole game. And the final boss is a bit of a jerk...they probably fooled a lot of kids with the false end credits!

The music is very good. The theme from the snow level sounds "snowy", and the forest theme "foresty". As a kid, the game over theme used to scared me. The game over screen didn't exactly help. The graphics were extremely good for a SNES game back then. It probably won't impress anyone today, but so what? At least the gameplay is good.

One of the best things about Donkey Kong is its simplicity. You just have to push a few buttons to control our heroes and you don't have to watch any long, boring cutscenes to get to the next level. I don't have a short attention span, but when I buy a game, I just want a game.

After all these years, Donkey Kong Country and it's sequels on the Super Nintendo are still some of the best video games ever made.

Monkey Business
hellraiser728 March 2023
This is another of my favorite video games of all time, favorite platform action games and favorite games for the SNES console. The game was a phenomenon for the system as it of course was not just a reinvigoration of one of Nintendo old properties but another legendary entry for the platform action genre and the very beginning of a franchise all on its own as this game much like Mario had plenty of volumes afterward and probably many more to come as long as time keeps rolling on. I remember getting my SNES console for Christmas when I was an adolescent and in seventh grade and this game came with it, it was a dream come true because I was only able to play this game as a demo in the toy and department stores. I loved playing the game back then and as an adult I still love playing it now.

It makes sense that they would change the Donkey Kong franchise into a action platformer as in the 90's the action platform genre was a genre on the rise with the popularity of "Sonic" and "Mario" a lot of games were trying to get in on the action, so why not an old franchise that helped start the genre in the first place.

I really love the graphical presentations; I remember how much they blew me away as it was CGI which in the 90's was a novelty and on the rise. This game to me is one of the best examples as it's CGI animation when used the right way, as it still looks beautiful today from the background to the character models themselves; it really showed how much further video games can go and were well on their way to taking that next step. The characters models are great as their still unique looking to this day because they don't even look CGI, they look almost like Claymation like the kind you see from Will Vinton. From how they move but just how lively the characters move and act, could almost mistake them for being real.

The music is great, there are plenty of memorable tracks, each of them fit the theme of the game on pulp jungle adventures. I like that each of the tracks, despite adventurous their also rather relaxing, a few of the tracks you could probably play as relaxation tune when you either want to meditate or help you sleep. My favorite track is the underwater track which fits as my favorite parts of the game, it just beautifully soothing and relaxing with its otherworldly tune which makes sense as going underwater is like going into another world. It also helps having this music as it makes the frustration you endure less painful.

The gameplay is great, it's like the Mario games, from the overview map and the controls of move, run, jump, nothing really new but everything done right but with some additions to make it more unique. Really like the heroes Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong who are your buddy buddy dynamic, which made sense as buddy cop films and buddy buddy comedies were still a big thing in the 90s.

Really like the use of the co-op function as this game was one of the first to utilize it. You're able to switch characters whenever you want and need to. But also having another buddy around helps as it goes with the rules of double elimination competition, "you lose twice your out, you lose once you still have one more chance." Both characters play well as both vary in strength and weaknesses where Donkey Kong is agile, medium speeded, and has strength as he can take out stronger enemies with both his jump and roll attack but is also able to lift barrels and chuck it at enemies, which makes him have a stronger offensive.

Diddy Kong is also agile, small and not as strong but fast as he can take out enemies with his jump and cartwheel attack. Can lift barrels too but doesn't have much range in the throw but can hit targets at short range and can still carry the barrel to use to ram enemies or as a shield, making Diddy's strong on defense. You also get to ride on animals much like how Mario rides on Yoshi. Only here you get different kinds of animals each with different abilities required for each of the stages.

Also really like the levels you play, each of them have a particular them and each of the stages are always a different challenge, giving the game slight unpredictability, you never sure what to really expect mainly how high or low the difficulty on the next stage will be. There are plenty of memorable stages like the romp in the ancient ruins and the mine cart which are despite trick are fun and just gave me the feel of the "Indiana Jones" films. But I really love the underwater stages as to me as there is just a lot to see and explore, and just because I love the ocean.

The game is on the medium hard difficulty as there are some parts of the game that aren't too much of a problem to get through, but there are others that are tricky which will just make a monkey out of you (no pun intended) as they can cause some real frustration. But at least the difficulty is fair as most of the time it's really because I made a small misstep, or I timed it incorrectly. It's the old principle of not getting it right the first time, so it will take some practice to safely make it from point A to B; this just makes the game all the more rewarding as you know it's your own skill that got you though.

Speaking of rewards, this game also has a risk reward element which is common in all platform action games, as Donkey and Diddy collect bananas much as Mario and Luigi collect coins which all add up to a reward of buying yourself another life. There are also prices like multiple bananas or a letter to spell Kong another opportunity to get another life, both are sometimes placed in some hazardous places which make you must do careful decision making on whether you really can and want to risk losing a life just to collect the reward. There are also barrels or even cave channels that can lead you to the bonus game to get you the extra bananas you need.

"Donkey Kong Country" is a vintage classic that has a big swing.

Rating: 4 stars.

The best selling 16-bit game of all time
The_Light_Triton11 June 2005
"Gamers will put up with mediocre gameplay, as long as the artwork looks good." These were words spoken by Shigeru Miyamoto, in his initial review of the game. Of course, he later had to eat them when the game became a true success. Ultimately, in most cases when game developers design a game to have phenomenal graphics in comparison to other games, those games usually lack fun gameplay. Not DKC.

One morning, the chilled out, relaxed Donkey Kong wakes up to find his Banana Hoard robbed, and his Nephew/Little Buddy, Diddy Kong missing. While the mystery of Diddy kong's disappearance and reappearance is solved really quick, the Banana Hoard isn't. It soon becomes evident that the Kremlings, Led by King K. Rool, have taken the bananas and spread them all over the island. With the help of their friends, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, and DK's Girlfriend, Candy Kong, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must travel across the island's many places to recover the banana hoard, and beat up a few kremlings while they're at it.

If you're looking for a true 16-bit Masterpiece, Donkey Kong Country is certainly a great choice. It's a simple platformer with plenty of hidden secrets to keep the most determined gamer coming back again and again until the game's finished.

Note, the Game, and it's sequels are currently available on the E-shop, But due to Nintendo's Shaky Relationship with Rare, the company behind some of your favorite SNES & N64 titles, the games might not be here forever. They were taken off Virtual Console during the Wii's initial run, So you might want to consider buying the games today. and at 8$, it's worth it.

Best game for the Super Nintendo!
action-68 July 2000
Donkey Kong Country is a really classic game. Everybody who saw it back in 1994 thought that this was a game for Nintendo`s new 64-bit system(Nintendo 64). But Donkey Kong Country was a game for the 16-bit Super Nintendo(Super Famicom in Japan). The extremely good graphics that blew everybody away were possible to do on a SNES(short for Super Nintendo Entertainment System) because the developers discovered a new technique to make SNES-games(the Advanced-Computer-Modelling technique). The graphics are impressive, even by today`s standard. But DKC didn`t become a classic just because it looked lush, it also had gameplay and atmosphere to die for. The levels are highly detailed, there are many of them and the excellent music makes for one he%& of an adventure. The game can be extremely frustrating, and you`ll throw away the control and swear like he¤%, but the game is really worth the bother, so you`ll soon pick up the controller again for one more go. I prefer this to Donkey Kong 64 on the N64. DKC is SO GOOD!! 10/10
