Each year, What's Trending host Shira Lazar and her partner Bart Baker unveil and discuss the top viral videos of the past 12 months, with data from Tubular Labs serving as their guide. The 2017 edition of that annual tradition is now live, and it is a look back at some of the recent clips that most captivated viewers across YouTube, Facebook, and other video platforms.
Lazar and Baker's breakdown is separated across ten categories. The "Most Watched Facebook Video," for example, came from People Are Awesome, the brand known for its pulse-pounding compilations of incredible stunts. Meanwhile, the adorable short film In A Heartbeat (which Lazar and Baker are watching above), snagged the title "Animated Video Of The Year." Ultimately, Lazar and Baker reveal the most-viewed video of the year. This year, according to Tubular, that achievement belongs to a Latin music video that was inescapable throughout 2017.

Either I’ve been staying on top of my homework or 2015 has been an exceptionally strong year for film scores already. From blockbuster disappointments to indie oddities and mindless action sequels, film music has once again shown it can transcend its respective dreck just as much as it can enhance the cinematic experience. With film festival season on the horizon, let’s check in with the best movie music of the year:
8. Chappie — Hans Zimmer, Steve Mazzaro, Andrew Kawczynski
Neil Blomkamp’s movies seem to be getting worse, but Hans Zimmer’s sensibilities are getting more exotic and daring. Course-correcting from the massive publicity stunt that was The Amazing Spider-man 2, the master of bombast continues to experiment with digital textures, recruiting pupils Kawczyksnki and Mazzaro for a score that humanizes and contextualizes the childish perspective of its Robocop with a heart of gold.

Halle Berry has said that should they ever so a standalone Storm movie, she would happily return. Speaking with Deadline about the new season of "Extant," Berry says:

Academy Award-winner and X-Men star Halle Berry recently sat down with Deadline to chat about the second season of her CBS show Extant, her upcoming trip to San Diego Comic-Con, and shattering stereotypes in film. During the extended conversation, it didn't take long before the topic naturally shifted to one of Berry's more popular roles, Storm, a role she recently reprised in 2014's smash hit X-Men: Days Of Future Past. While many viewed that appearance to possibly be the final time we see Berry suit up as Storm, Deadline still managed to ask Berry whether she would ever be interested in starring in a solo Storm film. Her answer: "In a heartbeat. In a heartbeat I would do a Storm movie. I love that character through and through. So if that ever became an opportunity for me if it’s before I’m 65-years old I would absolutely do that.

For today’s piece, I want to try something a little bit different, especially because this isn’t the first time I’ve spoken of Seth MacFarlane here. Last year, I wrote about MacFarlane as a future A-list comedy filmmaker on the eve of his sophomore feature A Million Ways to Die in the West opening. Then, that movie underperformed, so he’s still waiting for that second hit (after Ted) to solidify his cinematic standing in the same way that he has on television. Well, this weekend he has the opportunity with Ted 2, so I wanted to repost part of my MacFarlane piece, updated with some Ted 2 extra goodness. Hopefully this is a fun idea, since honestly…it’s fun sometimes to double dip and give something another go. Below you’ll see a re-edited look at my thoughts last year on MacFarlane, tailored more now for...

Last week, I published the first two of the interviews I did on “The Americans” set in December, with producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields , and with actress Holly Taylor. Now it’s time for one of the show’s two leads, as charming Welshman(*) Matthew Rhys and I talked about where Philip’s head is at in season 3, the pros and cons of so much wig work, why Keri Russell is referred to on set as “The Hulk,” how “The A-Team” helped inform his performance as Philip, and more. (*) My biggest regret about this interview? That I turned off the recorder right before FX’s Lana Kim prompted Rhys to share a memory of one of his first American jobs, as the killer in the final “Columbo” movie. This involved him doing a dead-on Peter Falk impression as he recalled that Falk wanted him to play the killer as a Cockney gangster,...

Ryan Reynolds says that all the delays regarding 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" spin-off feature "Deadpool," starring the actor himself as the wisecracking mercenary, have been worth it. Speaking with MTV News, he says the delays and way in which the film's current incarnation has come together allows those involved to tell the story they want to tell:
"It has been a long time, but it's happening the right way, and that's all that matters. The budget isn't what we all hoped it would be... We don't have the money that most superhero movies do, but that's great, actually. You know, necessity's the mother of invention and that's why we get to make the movie we want to make.
You gotta just have faith in the people you're working with, and faith in the prep, and that's all I'm doing. On this one, the prep's been eleven years. So, you know,...

A Deadpool movie is finally happening! A leaked script and leaked video pushed fan fervor to new heights last year, which gave Fox the confidence to green-light the production of the new movie. Ryan Reynolds, who loves the character, put up with years of development hell to hold on to the role. While at Sundance, the actor was interviewed by MTV and talked about the production, the video leak, and getting the film done right.
Because the MTV video is hit and miss for our readers on mobile, here are a few great quotes from the interview.

Colton Cumbie was one of the most polarizing castaways in "Survivor" history. He tells Zap2it what he regrets about his behavior and how much he wants to go back for another chance.
How are you feeling? How did everything go once you were medi-vac'd out of there?
"I'm obviously 100% better. What happened was I was taken to a hopsital where they determined it was a severe bacterial infection. They gave me a round of antibiotics, I got back to the States and I had to do another round of antibiotics. They thought it might still be appendicitis when I got back to the States, but I still have my appendix."
You were a very divisive player this year. Were you playing a character for the purposes of TV or for strategy?
"Um, that's hard. Obviously, there was strategy behind some things that I did. I think I could've handled it differently.

The sun blazed in the almost cloudless February sky as we rolled up to the heavy steel gate of an industrial estate some fifteen miles west of England's Worcester region to report for our basic training. A young guard with a severe blonde crew-cut and dressed in heavy body armour waved us through with one hand, the other resting on the stock of a large gun that hung at his side, the black metal accentuated by his bright yellow high-vis vest.
There were eighteen in our group, with another half dozen having arrived from other locations, including a Scottish couple from North Wales and a tall, stocky young lad in a puffer jacket with a bruised face that suggested he'd already seen some action. Nodding politely at each other, we exchanged muted pleasantries as we fidgeted nervously, unsure of what to expect.

"Where were You when it all started?"
That is, apparently, the question.
To answer, American Idol opened with clips of contestants' home videos, showing them as wee children singing along to Kelly Clarkson during season one. Ryan, through voiceovers, kept talking about how this - tonight, this season - has been 10 years in the making. Except I counted the winners we've had so far and this year's champion will be number 11.
I fully admit to being less-than-spectacular at math, but we're in year 11, Ryan. So this has been 11 years in the making, no? Ryan also told us that some of these contestants had been waiting their entire lives for this moment. All 15 years of their lives. They were practically born for this very moment. Yesterday. All of them.
New this year is the "Contestant Cam." Some contestants have been given small camcorders to record their journeys to auditions and beyond.

Mumbai, Nov 19: In April 2010, volcanic ash from the eruption of the hard to pronounce Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, threw global airline traffic and business into disarray, causing billions of dollars worth of losses. One man, however, was not so sad by the turn of events.
He was the only daredevil to fly over the volcano for four consecutive days and shoot photos and videos that the world got to see. The result of these dangerous excursions is a lovely little short film, 'In A Heartbeat', being screened at the Golden Elephant 17th International Children's Film Festival, India (Icffi), in Hyderabad. The man who shot these videos.

In case you were wondering how fast society was approaching the Singularity, news that Coco’s butt is on Twitter answering questions about itself should give you a pretty good idea. “Omg.I woke up this morning & my ass was on Twitter answering questions..It has a mind of its own.Happy Thong Thursday!,” Ice-t‘s lady tweeted this morning. Besides your usual questions like “Wha?” and “How does it type?” and “Wait, so it was awake before you were, Coco?,”we took the liberty of imagining a (fictional) Q&A, with the queries we would like answered by Coco’s sentient derriere:
Q: @cocosworld Will you marry me?
A: @cocosbutt4mybride I’m already married to Ice-t, sorry! If they ever pass a law saying butts can have their own separate husband, give me a call!
Q: @cocosworld Any chance you’d ever work with Coco on some new tracks?...

So, there I was, doing what I suppose I do far too often… scouring Facebook for status updates. A quick refresh, and there was an update from a friend saying how “This is not my Bucky Barnes.” He was referencing a purchase he’d recently made of a golden age Bucky figure, and how he hated the new Winter Soldier-era Barnes figure. Suffice to say, after seeing his umpteenth remark how a modern interpretation of one of the classic comic book heroes he loved so dearly rubs his rhubarb the wrong way, I had enough.
Call it being cantankerous in my own “Hey, I know you think I’m too young to form a real opinion, but screw you, I can anyways” way… but I’d like to say that this kind of general malaise towards interpretation and experimentation grinds my gears to a screeching halt. In short? Quit your bitchin’ gramps.

Denis O'Hare is one of those actors that has his hand in everything. I approached him at the Fox All Star Party to talk to him about a couple of my favorite roles of his, including the ruthless Russell Edgington from True Blood and liberal-minded Judge Abernathy from The Good Wife. Funnily enough, he wasn't even there for either of those shows. His new series, Ryan Murphy's new anti-Glee, American Horror Story, premieres this fall on FX.
I first asked O'Hare about what was most important to me: Any chance of him coming back to True Blood? O'Hare said, "I'll repeat to you what I've heard Alan Ball say to others. Russell is not dead. If they wanted him dead, they would have killed him. They mention his name so many times in season 4, I still feel like he's alive!" Okay, so even if Russell is alive, would...

To fans of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Christopher Meloni will always be obsessive New York detective Elliot Stabler. To fans of HBO’s Oz, the actor will always be sociopathic inmate Chris Keller. But to fans of Wet Hot American Summer, he will always be the d— cream-owning, sweaters-fondling, refrigerator-molesting, Vietnam vet and camp chef “Gene.”
To mark the 10th anniversary of director David Wain’s cult comedy classic we spoke to Meloni about his days at Camp Firewood.
Now shut the f— up and eat the corn!
Entertainment Weekly: How did you get cast in Wet Hot American Summer?...

How "special" Legos, "stolen" salt shakers, and mysterious airport packages help brands over-deliver.
A couple of months ago, as I boarded my plane home to Australia, I found a large brown envelope waiting for me on my seat. Neat handwriting on the envelope said, "A personal note to Mr Lindstrom." My curiosity was piqued. Inside was a bunch of newspapers and a handwritten letter. It explained, "We've noticed you've been away from home for some time, so we thought you might enjoy some local news before we get you safely back."
I'm a firm believer that anyone with any kind of business savvy will aim to over-deliver and under-promise. Yet, for some unknown reason, the opposite seems to hold true. Perhaps this belief dates back to when I was a young kid obsessed with Lego. I'd get the box and build the car, the helicopter, the castle or whatever, and...

Romantic thriller Apart had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this month, and will be playing in competition at the Dallas International Film Festival on April 3 and 5. I interviewed star Josh Danziger and writer/director Aaron Rottinghaus while they were in Austin to promote the movie (read my review for more details).
But before I get into my conversation with Rottinghaus, allow me to take a moment to share what actress Joey Lauren Adams had to say, when I spent a few minutes chatting with her. Adams (Chasing Amy) hired Rottinghaus as an editor on her writing/directorial debut Come Early Morning, which Austin Film Festival in 2006 after a Sundance premiere earlier that year.
"In the process of editing [Come Early Morning], we became friends and he went above in beyond in helping me with my project," Adams told me. So she returned the favor to take a small but significant role in Apart.

Well it’s a new day and here is yet another montage, the second in two days. Lucky for us, it’s just as great. Yesterday we showed you A Brief History of Title Design. This time however, it’s the work of youtuber Hatinhand. He brings us a montage sequence of amazing movie ending spoilers. Overall there are 71 films in this 5 minute clip. The most astounding thing about this is that he claims it is his first attempt at editing a montage.

For fans of Saturday Night Live’s Bill Hader who rejoiced at the Internet rumors that he was in the mix to star in Ghostbusters 3, there’s some good news and bad news. First the bad news: Hader has not been approached by anyone involved with the supernatural sequel. “I read about that on the Internet just like everybody else,” Hader told EW last night at the premiere of Paul, in which he plays a government agent on the trail of the titular alien, voiced by Seth Rogen. “I don’t know where that came from. I have not gotten a call.

I Am Number Four hits cinema screens this week and Jez had a quick chat with director DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) about working with Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay, collaborating with Oscar-winning cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and why 3D conversions suck.
Can you tell us a little about the movie?
I think I Am Number Four is a real fun science fiction romp with a real strong character, Number Four who’s….the reason I did the movie is because I really love the character. He’s this disenfranchised alien trying to figure out who he is and ultimately as he works his way through life he find a place which he thinks could be a place he’d like to stay and he realises that his destiny has a far greater calling than that and when he falls in love in this little town, all these legacies and all...

For the first time ever, Oscar.com is putting movie fans in the driver's seat with "Oscar All Access" exclusive cameras and content for the 2011 Oscar awards. And the site has tapped someone fans of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, and more are very familiar with, Radio Disney's Jake Whetter. He'll be hitting the red carpet, backstage and the Governor's ball with co-host Shira Lazar to serve up all the behind-the-scenes commentary.
"It's basically an exclusive experience for Oscar fans," Whetter tells Zap2it. "Oscar.com has the most cameras on the red carpet and we have 360-degree view cams all over. And the user can actually log on and interact with us on Oscar.com and watch what's going on. And they can control the cameras. This is the first time they've done anything like this. You can do it on Oscar.com, your iPhone, even on...
