An important film.

"Spoils of War" is certainly not a fun film but it's an important film because it talks about a horrible tragedy perpetrated by the repressive Argentine government in the late 70s-early 80s. This regime was responsible for the disappearance of many political dissidents and the insane Falklands War. "Spoils" specifically focuses on the children of the many murdered dissidents and the grandmothers who organized to push for the return of the children. It seems that the government thought it would be a good idea if the babies of dissidents in captivity were farmed out to non-family members--and the children had no idea they had been stolen from their heritage! None of this came as a surprise to me, as I've seen "The Official Story" (a GREAT film that dramatizes this) and know about the abuses of this far-right era. But so many don't know about it--particularly those who are not from South America.

The film is interesting but also looks as if it were home-made. It's full of low-quality black & white footage--which can easily be forgiven since it is a documentary. Worth a look...and quite depressing as even today most of these kids have not yet been identified and the folks who were responsible haven't really had to pay for their horrible acts.
