Cruel and fatal love affair in dangerous times...
ccmiller149229 September 2011
Based on "La Sorciere" by Victorien Sardou, this film version is a great improvement on the play itself, largely due to the central performances and the adept settings that capture the dark, brooding mood of 16th century Toledo and Inquisitorial Spain. Jorge Negrete is a perfect embodiment of Don Enrique, the aristocratic nobleman unwisely drawn to the Moorish daughter of the deposed Sultan Boabdil's physician. He is painfully conflicted between vacillation, caution, and impulsiveness. The exotic Zoraya has medical skills of her own and an almost mystical attraction for Don Ernique. Gloria Marin plays the role with just the right suggestion of innocence and subtle allure which slowly builds to passion matching Enrique's fatal desire and ultimately bringing down the wrath of the Holy Office on their heads.
