Cirque du Soleil's Quidam will, I'm sure, leave you amazed. The contortions, the music, singing and embedded humour will have you glued I'm sure. That's what I found. I loved the experience!

Lovely fantasy - could've lived without clown act
ozzy7323 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I recorded this on Foxtel a couple of months ago and have watched it multiple times since. The music is wonderful and complements the acts greatly but doesn't distract from them.

A young girl, Zoe, is bored and neglected by her parents and falls into a fantasy land filled with acrobats, contortionists, comics and clowns.

One of the characters dressed like a clown was disturbing, but he was meant to be, as he seemed to be a bit of a bully. The other clowns I actually can't watch - I think I have a touch of coulrophobia as they just give me the creeps. Thank goodness I can fast-forward through that act.

John Gilkey is, to my mind, a comic/acrobat/performer and not a clown - he had a lot of style and I found him very funny. See his act with the hula hoop and the voice of God for example.

Probably my favourite acts are the German Wheel; Diabolos; the skipping ropes; the aerial hoops; the Spanish Webs; and Banquine at the end, which combined acrobatics and dance spectacularly. But there wasn't a single bum act in the bunch for me except for the aforementioned clowns. Brrrr ...

Highly recommended if you want a great stage show that isn't high-tech, multi-media dependent.

Quidam will leave your mouth open in amazment and wishing for more!
flyswat16@aol.com18 September 2002
I recently saw Quidam live here in Boston, and I knew that I needed to buy the DVD as soon as possible. In fact, I bought it right at the Grand Chapiteau (Cirque du Soleil's term for their big top tent) and watched it as soon as I got home. Wow. Wow. Wow! Quidam is unique from all the other Cirque du Soleil shows, including the ever popular Dralion. Quidam tells a story. A story about a young girl who has seen all there is to see, and she is frustrated in her own little world. When Quidam (a nameless passerby) comes to visit, all that changes. Soon, the little girl is introduced to a world of fantasy, beauty, happiness, and terror. The acts, which are simply incredible, are as follows:

1.) German Wheel - amazing performance of a man inside two hoops which have been connected. He spins around and does acrobatics while moving all over the place.

2.) Diabolos - 4 girls from the Peoples Republic of China whip their diabolos (Chinese yo-yo)around in every possible way. Wonderful act with great music.

3.) Aerial Contortion In Silk - a woman slowly descends from the sky contorting herself as she goes using two long, red silk ropes.

4.) Skipping Ropes - A whole group of people participate in a huge skipping rope game, but they do the most complicated and beautiful routines ever seen!

5.) Aerial Hoops - 3 women are drifted on stage from high in the air, all tangled up in one metal hula hoop. When they descend fully, they each get their own hoop, which is connected to the metal tracks above. They spin, glide, and contort themselves in the most amazing ways imaginable.

6.) *Handbalancing - Olga Pikhienko balances on metal canes connected to the stage, and what she does will astound you. For example, she is able to pull her leg up vertically over her head, and then, with one hand, hoist herself onto a cane in a split position, balancing only on that one hand! Simply incredible.

7.) Spanish Webs - 5 people and 5 ropes. What they do with one another is something so astounding you'll go back and watch it over and over.

8.) Statue/Vis Versa - 2 unbelievably strong people balance on one another in numerous positions, and all in slow motion!

9.) Cloud Swing - a unique blend of the Spanish Webs and trapeze. A great act that builds a lot of tension!

10.) Banquine - Without a doubt the best act in Quidam. 10 or so men and women from Russia and Italy propel one another through the air and land on one another with such grace. Some of the other incredible things they do include: a 4 man tower, a 3 man/1 woman in a split position tower, and numerous other gravity-defying stunts.

*In the current live show Quidam, Elena Lev has replaced the Handbanacing act with a Hoops act. She isn't on the Video or DVD, but you can catch her live when Quidam comes to your city. She is able to manipulate up to 20 hoops on every concievable part of her body!

A world I never knew about, a world I'd never seen. A world I never knew existed, or ever even dreamed.
Sup_Kitty27 January 2004
When I first sat down to watch, I wasn't sure I'd like it. I didn't know what to expect. But with the first note I fell in love with it. It rang, it sparkled and enchanted. As the show continued it was pure magic; things I never dreamed could be done, things I never hoped to see. It was like a Utopia: no such place. Like a beautiful and infatuating dream. It draws you into a vibrant and colorful world full of disarray and disorderliness. A place where chaos rules and surreal characters parade. Where reality and fantasy collide, producing a mixture of memories, desires, fears and sole individuality.

Spectacularly Spectacular!

If there is one video without much talking in it that I love, it is Quidam, presented by the fabulous artistes of Cirque Du Soleil.

The story of Quidam (pronounced Key-Dam), follows a little girl named Zoe, who is bored and trying to get the attention of her mother and father. When all of a sudden, Quidam, a man who holds an umbrella and a bowler hat but has no head, comes through the door and drops his hat. Zoe picks it up and runs after him, but he doesn't see her (not surprising...) and walks out again. Zoe puts on the hat and all of a sudden, her dull, boring world is transformed into one of colour and vibrance! Her mother and father are lifted into the air and John, a man in a purple suit, and Fritz, a creature with wild red hair join her in her journey around this colourful day dream.

Throughout the entire show, John will come back and entertain the audience, whether by throwing darts at a target that is strapped to his head, making a metal hula hoop into a halo or juggling three red balls and a hat rack. Be sure to look for this extremely funny guy!

With performances by people such as Chris Lashua (the German Wheel), Isabelle Chasse (Arial Contortion on Silk), Wu Di, Siqi Yuan, Xin Zhao and Xue Zhao (Diablos), Rene Bibaud (skipping ropes), Olga Pikhienko (handbalancing), Philippe Azoulay, Alain Cattonne and Guy Pannequin (Clowns), The Spanish Webs, Statues, Fatima Hedman (Cloud Swing) and the Banquine troupe, you'll think your eyes are playing tricks on you.

With any luck, you'll get your hands on this video or DVD, I know I will be quite soon.

10++ out of 10: Stunning, Incredible!
70mm MAN22 July 2000
This circus act is simply incredible. There has never been anything done like it. It is fresh, unique and most of all it is stunning in it's presentation. The colors, the music, the pacing, the very gifted performers all add up to a breath taking event. My home was never so quiet, in awe, yet energized as we watched this spectacle. Comments such as "Unbelievable", "Wow", "I can't believe this!", "No one can possibly do that", and more, were repeatedly shouted out as we watched. This is much more than a film. It is alive with a spirit of it's own. You'll remember "Cirque du Soleil: Quidam" forever. This is a must see event. My family and I will travel far to catch this performance live....as will many others I'm sure.

Quidam is an incredible show!
skiggles18 November 1999
The Cirque du Soleil show quidam was an incredible show to see live when it was here in town 2 years ago. When I found out that it was being released on DVD i was very excited. I did buy it the first day it came out and watched it. It is filmed very well, except it seemed to me they had modified several acts for the video release...most noticeably during the Aerial Contortion in Silk act named "Let me Fall". In the actual show, the performer simulates hanging herself at the end of her act very graphically and then being dragged off to hell, but this was modified to her sliding down the silk and being carried off stage. Otherwise, there were several acts I had never seen on the DVD which was a pleasant surprise. I recommend buying this movie, for anyone that has seen the show, or has not seen the show. It is very magical and an incredible mix of theatre and circus.

Fascinating! Watched it 100 times and always see something new
Simba421 June 2003
I have not seen the live show but have watched the DVD probably 50 times (because my daughter loves it so much). The music is what makes the show in my opinion. The young girl's voice is haunting. I think I read she's the daughter of one of the producers. I don't speak French so I have no idea what she is singing but it must be about loneliness. (Later, while watching a TV special on the Cirque company, I learned that the lyrics are written in a special language that is completely made up.) The music stays in your head long after you've finished the show. My favorite scenes are the German wheel guy (he's the first act) and the young Chinese girls who follow him. A must see!!

The best show I've seen both live and on video
ilikeemirish23 July 2002
I saw Quidam live before viewing the DVD. It's definitely worth seeing both ways, but if not able to see it live, the DVD is a must see. You get every expereience you'd be able to get seeing it live, but get the best seat in the house. It's a definitely must have for anyone who wishes that they could run away and join the circus. If you want to see some amazing acrobatics and strength, this is your movie. You won't believe your eyes when you see two people attached by the neck and see people climb ropes with their toes....it is truly amazing and these people are highly talented. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

*Singing* Quidam, Quidam... la nuit recule... d'un reve a lautre tu valses.....

sorry, I just can't stop singing the song (I have the soundtrack and know the words).

Anyway, I saw the show a while back, and it just blew me away. Everything was so bright, colorful, graceful, dramatic.... I can't explain. Just read the other comments and watch it when you can. Trust me here, it's AMAZING.

Cirque Du Soleil is SO COOL!!!
fuzziness1 September 2003
While it is impossible to show just how unbelievably incredible Cirque du Soleil is through the TV, this video of Quidam comes close. I would recommend seeing it outside using an lcd projector on a big screen at night, which is how i saw it.

An entirely unique art form
divaclv26 September 2001
How do you define something that's part circus, part theatre, part Las Vegas spectacular, part concert and part performance art? It's hard, but then if you could define Cirque du Soleil in any conventional terms it wouldn't be as incredible. It's something that words do not do justice, and which truly has to be seen to be believed. Like all live productions, it is best when seen in person, but the video of Quidam is an acceptable substitute for the real thing. It captures the spirit of the production admirably, as well as the dreamlike quality inherent in all Cirque shows.

There is some shadow of a story in this particular production involving the journey of a lonely and bored little girl, but the real reason to watch is the artistry of the performers. The individual acts are all astonishing. A personal favorite of mine is the German Wheel, involving a single acrobat whirling across the stage in a large metal contraption (be sure to get a good look at this guy's face; that is the expression of a man who loves his job). The Aerial Contortion is another standout, both beautiful and painful to watch as a woman twists and writhes while suspended above the audience by a length of red silk. A highlight among the group acts is Banique, a troupe of acrobats leaping through the air propelled and caught solely by their teammates. And as with all circuses, there are clowns--strange, surreal, and occasionaly disturbing clowns, but funny nonetheless.

The original score was composed by Benoit Jutras, and is one of the best soundtracks written for a Cirque production (Jutras' daughter plays and sings the role of the young girl). The music, along with the brilliant lighting and whimsical costumes, combine with the performers to make Quidam an unforgettable experience.

Yay for Quidam!
pippinlover1519 July 2002
I love Quidam. I went to go see it when I was 13, and fell in love. The performers are outstanding, and the music is perfect. I love circuses, and after the video came out, I instantly went and bought it. The video is great, and even though some of the camera angles don't always show the best picture, it is worth the money. If you like Quidam, don't forget about Dralion, Nouvelle Expérience, Saltimbanco, Alegria, and Journey of Man. All of those listed are exceptional, and I give them all 10 stars!

Incredible mix of theater and circus
martymaster23 February 2002
This is along with Dralion the best live show on earth. I can even say that this is a little bit better than Dralion. Cirque du soleil has managed to mix Circus with theater in a way that will amaze you over and over again. The acts are so incredible, and you can almost not believe what you see. The atmosphere is magic and along with an incredible soundtrack which is performed live, this gives you the entertainment of a life time. This show along with Dralion has amazed people around the world and they are both directed by David Mallet, which has done an excellent job. Go see this one if you have the chance or by the dvd.

Fantastic, both live and on DVD.
TxMike15 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Back 10 or 12 years ago, when I bought my very first DVD player, included was a "bonus" to order several (5, I think) DVDs free. I knew only vaguely what Cirque du Soleil was, and nothing about their show called "Quidam", but it was available and I ordered it. I watched most of it way back then, not really understanding what I was seeing, and put it away. And almost forgot about it.

Fast forward to 2013, two special 20-something friends gave us tickets to see the live performance of "Quidam" in Houston, just last week, at the arena where professional basketball is played. It was a small enough venue that all the seats were good, and ours were about half-way up, on what would have been the left-field seats of a baseball game.

It is all in French, and mostly sung, so it helps to know the story. A young girl, Zoe, is bored and neglected by her parents, so through her vivid imagination a Quidam (a tall man without a head but carrying an umbrella) shows up, a when she puts on the blue bowler hat the circus acts come alive on stage. It includes a live band and singer. The aerial acts are suspended from the five metal arches over the rotating stage, and they are suspended in such a way that they move from the back of the stage to a spot over the stage.

I would imagine many of the performers are Chinese and European-trained acrobats, and they exhibit feats of great strength and flexibility. Zoe's story isn't particularly important, it just provides a reason for the circus acts.

A few days after the live performance I re-watched the "Quidam" DVD and this time knew what I was looking at. No question, as nice as the DVD presentation is, and includes appropriate close-ups, seeing it live is a whole different experience. Plus, while the main of the story and the various acts are mostly the same as 1999, there also are some significant differences.
