- TriviaThere actually was a route 666. US Highway 666 ran from Gallup, New Mexico, to Cortez, Colorado, the gateway to Mesa Verde NP. Most of the route crossed the Navajo reservation and passes Ship Rock and near Four Corners, the only point in the US common to four states. The road itself still exists but has been renumbered by the New Mexico Department of Transportation because of superstitions about the number 666.

- Alternate versionsGerman version was supposed to be released uncut with a JK/SPIO certificate but the commision denied it. So the film was edited for violence to be released at all and the cut version was released with a "Not under 18" rating.

Idiotic blend of the road movie and zombie genres. You will shave points off your IQ just by watching this!
I'm asking myself why I watched 'Route 666' in the first place, and I'm clutching at the fact that the director William Wesley was behind the well thought of cult favourite 'Scarecrows' (a movie I admit I haven't seen) and the cast includes veterans LQ Jones (a Peckinpah regular) and Dick Miller (of Roger Corman fame). So despite my better judgement, and seeing that b-grade mainstay Lou Diamond Phillips ('The Big Hit') and the incredibly irritating Lori Petty ('Tank Girl') were the stars, I rented it hoping I'd be pleasantly surprised with a cheesy but entertaining good time. Stranger things have happened, right? Well sadly, 'Route 666' turned out to be beyond awful. It is one of the most idiotic horror movies I've seen in years and has absolutely nothing to recommend it. I don't know if this is a massive come down for Wesley but I see that 'Monsters' is also on his CV, and this movie reminded me of an episode from one of those cheesy anthology shows you catch in the middle of the night while dozing on your couch hosted by Eric Roberts or Ice T or Ice Cube or someone else that should know better. It just plain stinks. Phillips and Petty are joined by Steven Williams ('21 Jump Street') who plays a sassy Mafia accountant, like a poor man's Chris Rock morphed with Joe Pesci's 'Lethal Weapon' character, and TV hack Dale Midkiff, who once played Elvis, and appears to be trying to duplicate his physique circa 1975. LQ Jones ('The Wild Bunch', 'The Brotherhood Of Satan') is probably the only reason to endure this as a slimy sheriff, but it is basically just an extended cameo, and as watchable as he is I don't think it justifies a rental. And for those interested the legendary Dick Miller ('A Bucket Of Blood', 'Rock'n'Roll High School') only appears in the opening sequence as a surly bartender. The plot, for what it is, concerns the ghosts (zombies?) of a long dead chain gang who haunt a deserted stretch of highway. I won't waste anymore time on describing the whys and wherefores as the story is completely illogical, idiotic and unfrightening, three words which tell you all you really need to know about this turkey. Avoid.
