for northwestern...

Warning: Spoilers
i go to school at northwestern university and we have to watch this as part of the curriculum for intermediate Spanish. they talk quite fast, but i can understand a lot of it which is a good sign. the plot is actually quite good from what i can follow and if it was in straight English, i would probably watch it by choice. the idea of a murder simply to get land to dump toxic waste seems a bit far-fetched, but hey it is Mexico. this is the first telenovela that i have watched all the way through and i think that it offered a great starting block for me. it almost makes me wish that we had programs like this in the US. the character development of some characters such as Omar and Ofelia is pretty predictable, but the love triangle between Alex/Franco, Oriana and flavio offers the best plot twists. flavio is a very unique character because although he is evil, he seems to have somewhat of a good streak in him. ironically, he ends up proving to be much less intelligent than he believes himself to be. the fact that Alex falls in love with Oriana after her twin sister, his wife, is killed is kind of disturbing, but if you think about it it is quite tragic. Alex misses his wife and wants to replace her while getting his revenge for her death, but Oriana is innocent and just wants to be treated like a person, not a possession. the subplot with elis and Alberto proves to be instrumental towards the end of the series, but in the beginning seems forced. however, the acting in the telenovela seems pretty good to me. when i can concentrate enough on the emotion the characters are portraying in between translating, they do a good job. it offers a great opportunity to hone you Spanish speaking skills if you have the chance and that theme song is unforgettable.... "cuando me miras asi...." hahahah

Fast paced and original

A fast paced story dealing with topics rarely addressed by the telenovela genre, such as toxic waste dumping, corruption and psychological trauma. Both protagonists do an incredible job portraying their respective characters, and have the support of an awesome cast. I watched this novela initially, when I was fourteen years old, and unlike many of the shows/ movies I re-watched as an adult, this production has stood the test of time. I would also add that unlike many other novelas, this particular one is fairly short (approx. 60 episodes) and thus the story is fresh and straightforward, without the unrealistic twists and turns often used in the genre as a way of prolonging the show. Highly recommended.
