Padre Pio
His insatiable appetite for the seventh art means that when Abel Ferrara ain’t making one movie in particular, he is already onto some other project. His output in the last five years includes one doc, Tommaso (2019), Siberia (2019) and Locarno winning Zeros and Ones (2021). Long in the works and the subject of his 2015 docu Searching for Padre Pio, the fiction film Padre Pio would inevitably have a part for Willem Dafoe but he also made the interesting casting choice of Shia Labeouf – rescuing him from his persona non grata status. Production would have begun last November and so this will likely target a Venice Film Festival showing – a festival that the Italian American is a recurrent guest at.…...

Why is the Vatican rushing the beatification of a pope who oversaw its worst scandal in centuries? Church expert John L. Allen examines the situation for Newsweek.
When Pope John Paul II is beatified tomorrow before an audience of hundreds of thousands in St. Peter's Square, the event will mark a new land-speed record for arrival at the final stage before sainthood, beating Mother Teresa's previous mark by 15 days. Some have objected to the haste, particularly given persistent questions about John Paul's handling of the sexual-abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Yet if the child is father to the man, this is a clear case of the pope being father to the saint.

Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle has reportedly been asked to sing at a special tribute for Catholic saint, Padre Pio.
Padre Pio was a Capuchin priest from Italy, who became famous for his stigmata. On 16 June 2002, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
Sources have reported that Father Gian Maria Di Giorg, one of the most senior figures in the Roman Catholic church recently visited Susan and asked her to sing at a special service in Padre Pio’s honour.
Susan is said to be considering the offer and the invitation reportedly came about after she was given a special set of rosary beads, containing a piece of Padre Pio’s bandage stained with blood from his stigmata.
Maria Dorrian, the Scottish delegate for the Padre Pio Centre, who organised the gift, told The Express: “Susan has inspired so many of us. I don’t think she...
