Santo is the greatest wrestler/crimefighter/scientist ever
explodingcat10 November 2003
Ok this film is a jumble, but it is fun. It starts off with a long sequence in which a woman travels to her past life with the help of Santo's past life regression machine. The spinning spiral/ conveyor belt sequence where she goes back to her past life is pretty cool. Then after about 20 mins the past life sequence is over, the movie kicks into high gear, and we follow the trials of Santo as he attempts to recover Dracula's treasure to help the needy, and discover the secret of a masked man who seems to follow them and also seems to be evil. There is also a guy who stole RUN DMC's jewelry who is also cool. In short this movie rocks like a panther

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Santo, masked wrestler, crime fighter and scientist!
Infofreak10 April 2004
'Santo and Dracula's Treasure' is my first experience of the amazing Santo, and it's probably as good a place to start as any. Santo, a legend in Mexico for decades, is a silver masked wrestler turned crime fighter. In this movie he's also a scientist and invents a device that can transport people back in time to relive their past lives. A small group of scientists gathered together by Santo's friend Dr. Supulveda greet this announcement with incredulity. Santo needs a volunteer to save his scientific reputation and Supulveda's daughter Luisa volunteers. Donning a silver jumpsuit she enters Santo's time tunnel device and is transported into the late 19th Century where she is now the daughter of a Professor Soler. Soler is worried about his daughter's declining health and has called in his old friend Professor Van Roth for advice. Van Roth immediately sizes up the situation and suspects Soler's neighbour the mysterious Count Alucard (yes, you guessed it!). Back in the present Santo, Supulveda and their cowardly friend Perico witness these events unfold on closed circuit television. After Luisa is bitten by Dracula, Santo saves her from a staking by returning her to the present. Santo and friends then decide to try and locate Dracula's treasure, but things are complicated by a masked stranger intent on the same goal, and when Dracula is resurrected he continues to have a hold over Luisa who he wishes to make his eternal consort... This movie is a lot of fun and it will definitely not be the last Santo movie I watch!

Gothic science-fiction wrestling fun
alucinecinefago28 May 2020
The following review is an extract from the book "Santo, the Wrestler with the Silver Mask: A guide to all his films", which is now available on Amazon.

"This is one of the best known films of Santo, especially because there are two versions: The original in black and white, a routine gothic horror production marketed under the title "The Treasure of Dracula", and one in color with some spicy nude scenes that bring it closer to the softcore genre - a version that was believed lost for many years, to the point that several of the Saint's followers and Mexican wrestling films came to consider its existence just an urban legend.

We have several elements along the footage that enrich the plot: On the one hand, science fiction (The Saint shows us here his scientific side, with the creation of a time machine "to better investigate past civilizations"), the more traditional Gothic horror (with the prototypical story of vampires taken from the Stokerian novel), the gangster cinema (with the "Black Hooded" and his henchmen, who try to take advantage of our hero's invention), wrestling (the fight Santo must have in the ring against the son of the Black Hooded man) and in the most explicit version, we also find sensual busty vampires who show their flesh with lust and profusion. All these sub-genres, seasoned with comedy (some of this comedy is involuntary and some not) are brought together in the film - resulting in a highly entertaining filmic experience."

WRESTLING A VAMPIRE
kirbylee70-599-52617928 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There is a long history of films starring the cultural Mexican icon Santo. But the character of Santo is one of legend. A wrestler at first he was soon involved in everything from comics to movies over his career that lasted almost 50 years. His character in the films was sort of a spy-scientist-wrestler-hero for the day. And those movies while considered by many as camp today were quite popular at the time of their release. Most of those films have found their way via bootleg or washed out prints. Now VCI is releasing this film, SANTO AND THE TREASURE OF DRACULA, on blu-ray and it looks great.

The story opens with a group of scientists brought together at the home of nuclear physicist Dr. Cesar Sepulveda. He lets them know they are there to witness a new discovery made not by him but their host. Enter Santo. He explains to the gathering that he's invented a time machine but that it has yet been untested. He's gathered them here to hopefully receive assistance in testing out and documenting the results of those test. The group laughs him off and leaves.

Looking to prove his machine works he needs someone who can withstand the method being used. What the machine does is send someone's consciousness back into that of their ancestor in the past rather than their physical body. Dr. Sepulveda volunteers but is too old. His daughter Luisa, Santos girlfriend, volunteers instead and she is sent back in time. The experiment begins and Luisa is sent back. Unfortunately she is sent back to the body of an ancestor who was about to be bitten by Dracula.

The story here moves from the present to the past as two colleagues attempt to stop the prince of darkness from unleashing a vampire horde. We also get a glimpse of the horde Dracula intends to unleash, a group of well-endowed nude brides if you will (more on this later). Dracula eventually wants to add this past incarnation of Luisa to his list of brides and bites her. He takes her back to his secret lair where he reveals he has a cache of gold and jewels buried. At this time the heroes of the past find him and are about to stake out Luisa when Santo brings her back to the present.

Unable to remember exactly where the treasure is she does remember a clue. Now Santo and his group want to find the treasure so that they can use it to build an orphanage. But unbeknownst to this group (but not us) the evil Hooded Fez has been spying on them and intends to get the treasure first. When his group of thugs arrives and battles Santo they come to a draw. So Hooded Fez and Santo agree to settle this matter the way everyone should. A wrestling match! Yes, they stop shooting at one another and agree to this.

I'll stop here or I know you won't believe me what happens next. Suffice to say that the movie was more entertaining than I expected it to be. My first experience with a Santo movie might not have made me a die-hard fan seeking out more but I did enjoy this encounter. It provided enough camp to make me smile often and realize that at the time this movie was released I can understand why the series was so popular.

VCI has done a great job with this release offering a nice clean print to view. In addition to that they show why there were two versions of the film and match those moments one after the other in the extras. When these movies were made they made one version for the North American market and one for the European market. The European market had no qualms about nudity and therefore a number of scenes were shot with clothed and nude versions. VCI offers viewers a chance to see both.

If you're looking for something different to watch on a Friday night you can't do much more different than this one. It does offer some high entertainment value as well as some camp comedy at the same time. I'd recommend this as one worth watching.

one of the best Santo films
john229007 September 2009
I saw the uncut version of this film a while back and it is this one I am reviewing here. The uncut version of this film contains nudity which is just one of the reasons why I am recommending this film especially to those who are unfamiliar with the Santo films. This particular Santo film is in many ways unlike the usual run of the mill Santo films and that is another reason I recommend this film. I wish the uncut version of this film was more widely available in an English language version or at least in a version that contained easy to read and understand subtitles. If I have one complaint about this film it would be the hamminess and overacting of the actor who plays the ersatz vampire Dracula role. That aside, this is one of the best of the Santo series of films.

Purely amazing throughout
BandSAboutMovies26 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The brightest scientific minds in all of Mexico have gathered at the home of nuclear physicist Dr. César Sepúlveda to learn of an invention that is going to change everything that we know. Out of the shadows steps El Santo.

You may feel like the scientists in this movie who leave the room laughing when you think about Santo changing the world. After all, isn't he just a wrestler?

No, Santo is everything: a millionaire playboy, a superhero, a spy, an enemy of the occult and, yes, the man who has just invented a time machine.

You read that right. A time machine.

Don't they know that Santo already invented Facetime decades before it was on your phone?

Well, to test his machine, which only can send you back in time to watch the actions of your relatives or past lives or whatever magical nonsense that this movie chooses to baffle us with, Santo chooses his girlfriend Luisa, who was - of course - hunted by Dracula at som point when she was Luisa Soler. Somehow, Santo and everyone in our time is able to watch the past as if it were a TV show.

Luckily for those in the past, vampire hunter Professor Van Roth has fought off Count Alucard with mistletoe, which until now I had not realized could defeat vampires and was only an aid to sexual harassment. However, Dracula keeps up on trying to convert our heroine - by showing off all of his gold! - and finally does turn her, just in time for Santo to bring her back to our time where she's struck by the vampire's curse.

Meanwhile, an evil criminal known as the Black Hood and his gigantic son Atlas have been watching all of this and plan to steal Dracula's treasure, which really seems like both the best idea for a movie and the worst idea for reality.

Somehow, this all ends up in a battle between Santo and Atlas in the ring for the ring and medallion of the king of the vampires. Even though the man in the silver mask wins, the Black Hood has found Dracula's grave and plans to pull the stake out of his heart. If you think that Dracula isn't going to get a harem of evil women and do a Satanic ritual to win Luisa over for good, then you haven't watched Mexican lucha vs. The occult cinema.

And that's where the story would end, one assumes, but director René Cardona had a trick up his sleeve.

While the original 1969 release of Santo en el Tesoro de Drácula was shot in black and white, there was another version of the film in color made for European markets called El Vampiro y el Sexo. Instead of just gowns for all of Dracula's women, they now appear completely and totally nude in several scenes where Dracula paws at them.

There's an urban legend that there are six different Santo films that feature alternate nude scenes, while another that Santo made a deal with Cardona to keep this film locked up.

For years, the only evidence that this alternate film existed was posters and photos.

Decades after filming, three original copies of El Vampiro y el Sexo were discovered in a vault in the film's original production facility Cinematographic Calderón. The film was restored by the Guadalajara International Film Festival, which planned to show it to the public as part of a vampire film series curated by Guillermo del Toro.

Sadly the premiere was canceled due to protests from E Hijo del Santo and Santo's estate, who claimed that showing the film would damage Santo's reputation. After some debate, the film was shown twice in 2011 with no issue or stain on the memory of El Santo.

Dammit I love this.
Badmovieboy12313 June 2022
Never seen a santo movie before. But I'm a sucker for old movies and TV. First off let me say the banter between him and the minor characters makes this movie for me. A good performance from our dracula doesn't hurt either. Def a gimmick in itself but alotta fun for what it is. And Def agood time.
