This is not Herald Square

There seems to be an longtime error in the title of this movie. It wasn't taken on Herald Square. The building in the background is the Lincoln Building on the corner 14th Street / Broadway on Union Square.

I'm not sure, why the error happened, maybe because the first movie theater in Manhattan, which was showing movies of the Edison Company, was located near the Herald Square and someone used this information in a wrong way, when he titled the movie.

You can also see a part of Dead Man's Curve in the movie, where the Broadway cable cars turned from 14th Street into Broadway.

There is a Lumiere movie from 1896 nearly showing the same scene, shot only a few months later (in the movie here there is a gap on the right side of the building, in the Lumiere Movie the gap is filled with a construction of a new building.

Eleven-Seconds of History

Herald Square (1896)

Part of early cinema had cameramen simply sitting their cameras up and filming a few seconds of anything that would pass by. This film runs a very brief 11-seconds but it captures footage from Broadway, Six Avenue and 35th Street (according to the Edison site). You're certainly not going to learn anything in 11-seconds but I always love watching these old movies because it's the greatest document of what things really looked like back in the day. We get to see the travel cars and see what people were actually wearing back in 1896. I know most people would be bored even with these 11-seconds but if you're a fan of history or film then there's plenty to find entertaining no matter how short the film actually is.
