It's party time for action junkies and auto-erotics. The Fate of the Furious, a.k.a. Furious 8, is a bolt of greased lightning that never lets up on the shake, rattle and hum. Is it as killer good as 2015's Furious 7? Don't get greedy. That thunderously exciting and surprisingly touching blockbuster would have made the ideal capper to the Fast and the Furious franchise that began in 2001. As a tribute to Paul Walker, who died in car crash unrelated to the movie, Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth put their...

Justin Lin’s “Star Trek Beyond,” the third installment in the J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” series, boosted the summer of 2106 back into positive territory.
That doesn’t make “Beyond” a big moneymaker for Paramount. It falls into the middle ground of big-budget films of late. It’s not a domestic bomb like “Warcraft” or “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” nor is it a too-expensive minor dud like “Ghostbusters” and “The Legend of Tarzan.”
“Beyond” likely will end up, like earlier summer recoupers “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” in profit. Yet the returns on these franchise tentpoles compared to cost pales versus the massive numbers seen for a slew of animated hits and far less costly real blockbusters “Deadpool” and “The Jungle Book.”
“Star Trek Beyond” came in 16% ($11 million) lower than its preceding franchise entry. That’s an improvement over “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which fell 26% from its last edition.

In his second shot at presenting the Academy Awards, the comedian deftly addressed the #OscarsSoWhite controversy but skewered other targets, too
Chris Rock took aim at the Academy, its detractors and Will Smith during his turn as Oscars host, which managed to find the funny in a controversy that has rumbled on since the all-white nominations were announced in January.
In his opening monologue, Rock seemed nervous, delivering lines that skewered the diversity debate in a high-pitched range that was even higher than his signature lofty patter. Whether he was unnerved or not, he immediately addressed #OscarsSoWhite and the Academy’s decision to include films with black members such as Creed, Concussion, Straight Out of Compton and Beasts of No Nation, none of which received nominations, in its opening segment.

Coming on the heels of “Empire” and “Straight Out of Compton,” VH1’s upcoming original movie “The Breaks,” is the latest in a string of movies and TV shows set in the world of hip hop. Set in 1990, “The Breaks” follows Afton Williamson’s character Nikki as she decides to turn away from pursuing a law career to try to make it big as a record executive in New York. “It’s interesting that we’re now doing a story about the ’90s as a period piece,” Williamson said in an interview with TheWrap. “Music and hip-hop is so relevant now,...

The people behind the releases of three of 2015’s standout British film camapigns discussed their processes at the Screen Film Summit today (Dec 10)
Hugh Spearing, head of marketing at Studiocanal, presented Legend, which stars Tom Hardy as the East End’s notorious gangster twins Ronald and Reggie Kray.
The film opened to £5.1m over 5-days and went on to take £18.2m in the UK, the company’s second highest-grossing film behind Paddington.
Jon Rushton, head of theatrical distribution at Curzon Artificial Eye, discussed 45 Years, which became the biggest ever day-and-date release in the UK when it crossed £1m, before going on to gross £1.8m theatrically.
Charlie Lyne, the director of micro-budget Beyond Clueless, talked the audience through making and marketing his essay film about teen movies, which took £35,000 from a limited release and sold to Netflix for a two year spell.

Straight out of Compton and straight into Fast and Furious. After an intense search, Universal has settled on F. Gary Gray, the helmer behind its summer hit Straight Outta Compton, to direct Fast and Furious 8, and sources say Gray has told the studio he's ready to initiate negotiations for a deal. Gray was chosen over such directors as Louis Leterrier, Adam Wingard and William Eubank. The search for a director was necessary after efforts to convince Furious 7 director James Wan to return for No. 8 proved unsuccessful. The search went public after THR reported on the difficulty in finding a director

Well turns out that the $56.1 million reported yesterday for "Straight Out of Compton's" opening weekend was wrong. Seems that Universal underestimated the actual numbers for the film and, according to the studio today, it actually grossed $60.2 million for the weekend. To put that into perspective, that makes it the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film in August, the fifth biggest opening ever for any film in the month of August, and puts it in 120th place of the 200 biggest box office weekend openings all of time. Also, considering that the film only cost $29 million to make, which in Hollywood studio terms makes it practically a low budget film...

Add another hit movie to Universal's list, as "Straight Out of Compton" finished the weekend easily in the top spot with $56.4 million.
The N.W.A. biopic ended Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" two week run at the top as it only took in $17 million.
Guy Ritchie's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." opened with $13.5 million, as "Fantastic Four" fell to $8 million and Jason Bateman's "The Gift" rounded out the top five with $6.5 million.

The long-in-development N.W.A. biopic Straight Out of Compton finally started showing some forward progress with the recent casting of Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr., to play the teenage version of his father, and now two more relative unknowns have joined the movie as Cube's partners in rhyme. Dr. Dre will be played by Marcus Callendar while the late Eazy E will be played by Jason Mitchell.

We told you at the end of last month that F. Gary Gray was in the running to direct the sequel to Captain America, but instead, he's decamped to Compton. Gray is now in talks to helm Straight Out of Compton, a biopic of pioneering rap group N.W.A., whose members included Eazy-e, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Gray has directed music videos for the latter two artists (his first directorial effort was actually Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day"), which surely helped him snag the gig. Begin your fantasy-casting!
