[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the September 20, 2023 episode of Jeopardy!.] Jeopardy! hosts often ask players to be more specific with their answers during a game. When it comes to the September 20 game, however, fans think Ken Jennings unnecessarily asked a player to expand their response. The clue came during Double Jeopardy, when players were tackling “The Real (White House) Wives of D.C.” category. The clues, as the category title denotes, were all about former First Ladies. When Alex Lamb, a data scientist from Lake Forest, California, selected the $1,200 clue, it read, “She met the future president in 1938 when they both tried out for a local play in Whittier, California.” Alex got the last name, Nixon, right, but Jennings said he needed a more specific response. When Alex fumbled and said Richard, instead of Pat, Nixon, competitor Brian Ross, an attorney from Los Angeles, was able to chime in and win that clue. Some viewers feel this was ...

It looks like Universal’s long-gestating Last Voyage of the Demeter had a modest preview night, earning $750k at the box office, according to Deadline. That means the film is only on track for a single-digit opening, with the trade noting it opened similarly to last summer’s The Invitation, which only eked out a $6.8 million opening weekend. That’s not a great result for Universal’s movie, which has gotten mixed reviews but was well-liked by hardcore horror fans, including our own Jessica Dwyer (read her review). Our own Brad Hamerly pegged the film as opening around $9 million, which seems higher than the preview night figures suggest.
Indeed, the weekend is set to be dominated by Barbie, which should have a north of $30 million weekend, with Oppenheimer also expected to make a strong showing at around $17.5 million. It’ll be interesting to see if either of last week’s new releases,...

People Explains: Who Is Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore — and Does He Still Have a Chance to Win?
Almost nothing about Roy Moore’s candidacy for Senate has been without controversy.
First, he challenged incumbent Luther Strange, who had been appointed to replace Jeff Sessions when he was tapped by President Donald Trump to serve as U.S. Attorney General. During the primary, he waved a gun at an election eve campaign rally, lacked support from the Republican establishment and has called Islam a “false religion.”
But none of that scared off Alabama voters on Sept. 26, who supported Moore in the Republican primary runoff for Sessions’ vacated Senate seat.

From dousing herself in ranch dressing to feeling up Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy has made a name for herself in the “Saturday Night Live” hall of fame. After last night’s episode, she earns a special distinction as well: McCarthy joined the Five Timer’s Club, so named for those who have hosted “SNL” a minimum of five times. (We won’t spoil the fellow club member who presented her with the official smoking jacket during the credits, but it’s good.) McCarthy surprised viewers earlier this season when she appeared as apoplectic White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and it’s a cameo we’ve looked forward to since. That’s all to say: It’s the penultimate episode of the season, so did “Saturday Night Live” step up to the plate?

Bones signs off on Tuesday, after 12 seasons of crime solving, evidence examining, blood, guts and, most importantly, bones. But at the core of the long-running Fox procedural -- the “heart of the matter,” if you will -- was a partnership between forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).
From their first episode together, Brennan and Booth’s dynamic was electric, and while the will-they-or-won’t-they of it all took nearly seven seasons to sort out (more if you count that they don’t actually tie the knot until season nine), their relationship kept fans hooked for all 245 episodes. We watched Brennan wrestle with her feelings as Booth looked for love, saw them lay it all on the line only to yank it back again, and finally, at long last, got to witness their happy ending. Two kids and countless hurdles later, they’re still going strong.

It’s not too often that a remake is much, much, much better than the original but we have one of those rare instances in the case of Captain America. Years before Captain America: The First Avenger, the first movie version of the star-spangled hero of WW2 was filmed in 1990 and directed by Albert Pyun.
This movie…was awful! It has a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and went directly to a video release, wisely bypassing theaters to prevent millions of people demanding their money back. Captain America is played in this mess by Matt Salinger,...

Final Update, 1:32 Pm: Fury ended the weekend at $23.7M for Sony and Qed, so it underperformed all the tracking (gee what a surprise), social media metrics, and expectations just a little. But it will likely still make money all in after its domestic, international and home entertainment run. I understand that there were significant profit participations on this one. Fox and Reel FX’s The Book Of Life closed the weekend on the high end of our estimate with $17M and will have some playtime again over the next two weekends as no new offerings are in the family zone until Big Hero 6 bows from Disney on November 7. The other newbie, Relativity’s The Best Of Me, was soft with $10M. Gone Girl is now sitting pretty at $106.7M after three weeks in release for Fox and New Regency.

Intense music drama Whiplash, already a big winner at Sundance and the Deauville American Film Festival earlier this year, should drum up plenty of audience interest in its debut this weekend, even though it faces a crowded specialty market that also features several other notable newcomers, including the Bill Murray comedy St. Vincent, Hilary Swank‘s You’re Not You and Jeremy Renner‘s Kill the Messenger. All are what I’d call “big” specialty releases, with big names attached that should attract big attention.
The weekend also includes what I’d call some “small” releases, including documentaries The Overnighters (another Sundance winner) and I Am Ali, about the former heavyweight boxing champion, alongside the Mormon Church-backed Meet the Mormons. All will be clawing for attention in a market that’s seen more than 30 films debut in the past three weeks.
That said, Whiplash should be a real career turner...

In the season two premiere, Graceland had the challenge of bringing Mike (Aaron Tveit) back to California on a full-time basis without looking like they were forcing the issue. After completing his assignment last year, Mike headed back to D.C. to take up a comfy desk job with a direct line to the Director of the FBI position he so highly covets, but after living the undercover lifestyle, when the call came to head back to Graceland, he hopped on the first plane. Simple enough it seems, but the real challenge was finding a reason for him to stay that made sense for the story.
If you didn’t tune in for the first season, this episode gives viewers enough of the cliff notes to make it an easy starting point for new fans. The relationships between the characters are fairly obvious – Briggs (Daniel Sunjata) and Charlie (Vanessa Ferlito) , Mike...

Season two of Graceland is just around the corner, and the USA network is promoting it in a big way. In an effort to attract a larger audience for the sophomore drama, the network has set their sights on a new wave of marketing and released a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the series, which will appear at AMC, Cinemark, and Regal Entertainment Group theaters near you.
The theater spot will run as part of the Ncm Media Networks’ FirstLook pre-show program which airs exclusively at almost 2,000 screens nationwide starting today. This is a huge move for the more conservative NBCUniversal owned cable network, which has put a lot into promoting the upcoming season.
The two and a half minute featurette features mostly footage from season one and introduces the characters to a new audience. There’s not much in the way of what to expect from season two, but...

NBC has released your first look at star Matt Ryan (“Layer Cake”) from their upcoming “Constantine” TV show, based on the D.C. comic book “Hellblazer.” The character was previously portrayed by a very non-British Keanu Reeves in the movie of the same name directed by Francis Lawrence, but this time around they’re giving you an honest to goodness Brit in the role. Ryan will star as the titular demon hunter, one John Constantine, a man “struggling with his faith is haunted by the sins of his past but is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.” The show co-stars Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau, and Charles Halford. Neil Marshall (of “The Descent” and “Doomsday” fame) is directing the pilot, with “Man of Steel” and “Batman Begins” guy David S. Goyer having adapted the show from the comic originally created by Daniel Cerone.

TV news and notes:
- Two weeks into its midseason run and "The Walking Dead" continues to take ratings gold in the key 18-49 demo over the Winter Olympics. Though Sunday's (Feb. 16) episode was down slightly from the week prior's midseason premiere, the AMC hit pulled a 6.8 rating in the demo -- or 8.7 million viewers -- besting NBC's 4.9 rating for the Sochi Games. Of course, the Olympics earned more viewers overall, scoring 21.3 million viewers compared to AMC's 13.3 million.
- A new season of TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" premieres Tuesday, April 1. The eighth season of Duggar family adventures will follow sister Tessa as she "courts" Ben -- that's dates with the intention of marrying. Here’s a conundrum: A friend or relative complains about how terrible movies have gotten, but they will only go see bad movies. I’m not saying that’s exactly what’s happened with Redbox‘s most popular rentals of 2013, but the annual list fascinates for two reasons. First, it highlights evidence that there might truly be a giant gap between the general audience and critics by displaying cinema at its most fast food basic. Second, it’s weird. This is a place where Django hangs out with a dominating Melissa McCarthy (to soon dethrone Adam Sandler?). Where a broken Denzel Washington is hip to hip with Brad Pitt fighting zombies. Where 2012′s longevity is genuinely proven. Here’s this year’s most-rented from Redbox: Identity Thief The Heat World War Z Flight Olympus Has Fallen Django Unchained Grown Ups 2 White House Down Here Comes the Boom Now You See Me White House Down And Olympus Has Fallen...

This week's "Graceland" revealed a shocking secret about Paul Briggs (Daniel Sunjata): The FBI agent is attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings as a result of his heroin addiction. Briggs is at the top of his game, and Mike has been placed in Graceland to investigate him, instead of being assigned to D.C. Is there any part of Briggs that suspects Mike's motives for being in the house?
Absolutely, because Briggs has a past -- that is one of the things that's teased out over the course of the first season. He's well aware of it, and he...

Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock are each pretty amazing on their own. So just imagine how great a movie starring both of them as cops hunting down an evil drug lord will be!
"The Heat," out this week, promises plenty of laughs with a team like Bullock and McCarthy at the helm. Bullock has demonstrated her comedic chops in flicks like "Miss Congeniality" and "The Proposal," while McCarthy is consistently hilarious in almost everything she does, from "Bridesmaids" to "Identity Thief." The Heat's premise -- a seasoned FBI pro being paired up with a rough-around-the-edges local cop -- is hardly groundbreaking. But the fact that both cops are ladies is, strangely enough, in this day and age.
Female buddy movies are rare, and female buddy cop movies are unheard of. We see plenty of dude cops bonding in everything from "Lethal Weapon" to "48 Hours" to "Rush Hour" to "End of Watch.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...
