Money makes the world go round
Horst_In_Translation22 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Kleingeld" is a 15-minute short movie from over 15 years ago and it managed to score an Academy Award nomination. The film's director and writer is Marc-Andreas Borchert and he is still making films today, managed to build a career on his success here. The two lead actors, however, have not acted too much recently, especially the actor who played the homeless guy. He has not been in films after this one.

This short movie is about the unusual relationship between a successful business man and another man who has nothing. The businessman gives the homeless guy regularly some change and the homeless guy, who is grateful for it, starts washing the other man's car. However, the business man initially does not want him near the car, then later on incidentally gets the car dirty, so he gets a real needed service from the homeless guy. One day, however, the business man has no change with him, so he tries to sneak off without getting seen. He does not succeed and even accidentally hurts the homeless guy with his car. From that day on, the homeless man is gone. In the end the business man finds him again and intends to give him more money than usual, maybe to get him back to his parking space, but the homeless guy just looks at him and goes away.

It's a decent story and even if I did not like the ending that much, it was difficult to look somewhere else during these 15 minutes. Captivating characters and an atmospheric setting. The most interesting discussion point is probably if the business man is a good or bad guy here and how it possibly changes throughout the movie. Good, but not great, job by Borchert. All in all, worth a watch.

An excellent film about money from Germany-a land of great philosophers.
FilmCriticLalitRao9 September 2013
For film critic Mr.Lalit Rao,Germany is the only great nation after Greece and France which has given numerous important philosophers and philosophical theories to the world. There is hardly any good philosophy student who does not know about great German philosophers namely Hegel, Heidegger,Kant and Schopenhauer. This is one principal reason why whenever one hears the word Germany, one gets some kind of an idea about Germany. It is this idea which helps people to form an image of Germany as per their intellectual level.Germany is best represented by its people who are renowned for their passion for money and punctuality. It is the former aspect which has been treated in a very humane manner in this short film. Kleingeld informs us about the relationship one shares with money. It is the simple tale of a beggar who willingly opts to clean a businessman's car in exchange for a simple sum of money which he receives on most occasions. However, these two men are stunned when their mutual trust disappears when a bigger sum of money comes into picture. There is a lot for serious viewers in this short film directed by Marc-Andreas Bochert who studied at Potsdam,Germany's famous "Hochschule Für Film Und Fernsehen "Konrad Wolf".On the one hand, some viewers would empathize with the beggar's pride as his life does not give him much chances to improve his station. On the other hand, there would also be viewers who would reserve their sympathies for the business man as his work describes his behavior. This is one reason why he is able to reserve some small amount of money for a beggar but denies a needy man a loan amount. All cultures have discussed the importance of money. However,Kleingeld informs that money has no value if the value of a human is lost.It is the inclusion of this philosophical thread which makes Kleingeld a film worth watching with friends, family and other people who matter.

Top Winner in Student Chris Awards
ground019 February 2000
This film was the winner of the Student Competition of the Columbus International Film and Video Festival (The Chris Awards). As chairperson for the student competition of this festival I am pleased to see it has gotten so much international recognition. The direction and acting are outstanding. I only wish my student films had been this well made.
