CBS' drama "Hostages" is at its best when it takes advantage of the pressures of fleeting time, as it does in Monday's (Oct. 14) episode.
The tension resumes on many levels and this episode leaves two people close to death and three-fourths of the family on the brink of escaping. They will flee if Dr. Ellen Sanders (Toni Collette) can just board the bus to Canada with her children and leave her husband, Brian (Tate Donovan), bleeding on the floor.
Brian had confessed to Ellen that he is having an affair -- really, he had to come clean when the family is under siege? Glad his conscience is clear. It's not as if Ellen had anything else clouding her mind -- oh, like whether she was to kill the president of the United States in what should be a routine surgery, or let the hostages kill her family.
Kidnapping ringleader Duncan Carlisle (Dylan McDermott) shoots Brian,...

Right now, we are in the middle of Season 8 of the popular T.V. show How I Met Your Mother, which is setting up to have Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) get hitched.
The show’s main theme is the future Ted Mosby (narrated by Bob Saget) telling his future kids in 2030 the story of how he ended up meeting their mother.
In previous episodes, we’ve gotten clues as to who the mother is and it all comes around to when Ted meets her at Barney and Robin’s wedding when she plays as part of the band at the reception.
We know that she was at a club the same night Ted and Barney were on St. Patrick’s Day and she left a yellow umbrella that she was holding, an umbrella he ends up finding at the club and takes with him.

The end game is in motion.
I mean, you could say it’s Been in motion for 8 seasons, but now we have a countdown that is arguably even more daunting than the Slap Bet Countdown: The Mother Countdown.
Let me explain.
It all started when Ted began arguing with future versions of himself and Barney about whether or not he should attend Robots Versus Wrestlers. (According to Barney, thinking about decisions from the Twenty Years From Now perspective helps guarantee a good decision.) Twenty Years From Now Ted and Twenty Years From Now Barney were totally in favor of Ted’s robot adventure because,...

Those of you who are regular S & A reader will remember this independent film I profiled last year, titled Because I Love You, written and directed by Joseph Elmore, which created quite a brouhaha. You remember? That film about, "Cream, an exotic dancer and devoted mother of a beautiful, little girl named Cookie and who's in the midst of a custody battle with her ex-husband, who wants her to stop dancing or give up her daughter. On the very night that Cream has decided to quit dancing, the strip club is robbed by a group of wild animals and she is taken captive and moved to an unknown location where she is beaten and raped repeatedly. They plan to use her and then...

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 2, Episode 7 of Showtime's "Homeland," titled "The Clearing."
Remember that old Smashing Pumpkins song where Billy Corgan sings, "Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage?" That's about how Congressman Nicholas Brody has to be feeling now, as the walls of the maze close in on him. Nazir's plan to attack America is in its final stages -- "Things are going to move very quickly now," Roya promises with homicidal glee -- and both the terrorist's network and the CIA have big plans for Brody.
Roya sets this episode's plot machinery into motion by giving Brody the one instruction he doesn't want to hear: Keep Vice President Walden happy at an upcoming fundraiser. Never mind that he's literally your least favorite person on the planet -- a man you hate so passionately that you...

Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t watched tonight’s Vampire Diaries stop reading now. We want to give fans a place to talk about the episode — and the scene that had us reaching for the tissues — now. Update: Our full recap is live.
Because we all knew Elena would complete her transition and become a vampire, this episode had to deliver in emotion what it couldn’t offer in suspense. And it did. Elena hadn’t fed when she first woke up because she and Stefan wanted to give Bonnie a chance to find a way to make her human again.

It's Back! The film that everyone has a strong opinion about, Because I Love You, written and directed by Joseph Elmore (which we've covered before here on S & A - most recently Here) has a new extended trailer. If you recall, the film deals with "Cream, a beautiful young exotic dancer torn between good and evil, internally as well as externally. She is driven to an undisclosed location and brutalized repeatedly. Feeling like all hope is gone, it is the love of her daughter, who is waiting for her to...

Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin), the film also stars Alice Eve (Sex and the City 2), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Faster). Oh, and will someone please bear Allison away to her fainting couch; being a member of the weaker sex has really taken a toll on her this evening.

This week, we open on Whitney and Sara, still in bed, still naked, and still going at it. They compare themselves to those other star-cross'd lovers, Romeo and Juliet, although I suspect Sara thinks a Capulet is something you take for a hangover.
Whitney says, "It's like I'm sneaking out on one family to go yon window breaks to the other."
I don't remember Juliet wearing heels and a thong, do you?
After they find the motivation to get vertical and go outside, Whitney and Sara check out that other hotbed of lesbian activity: a dog park. Across an expanse of poop and soggy tennis balls, is Whitney's ex and current houseguest, Rachel, who's also out for her morning constitution. She spies the two of them and puts it together; they've been hooking up. This park suddenly has two bitches, too many.
Rachel leaves without confronting Whitney. Clearly, no one...

"From Vidas Secas to Central Station, Brazil's northeast has long held a cinematic place as a sweltering netherworld of struggle, madness, and stark landscapes," writes Fernando F Croce in Slant. "It's an area that holds particular interest to writer-directors Karim Aïnouz and Marcelo Gomes, who have examined its rapport with characters in previous features (Love for Sale and Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures, respectively) and who team up for a far more experimental take in I Travel Because I Have To, I Come Back Because I Love You."...

There's something primal about the moving-image travelogue. One of the original genres of moviemaking, it made a comeback in the home-video footage now considered a hallmark of documentaries' montage sequences. "I Travel Because I Have To, I Come Back Because I Love You" personalizes the charm of observational B-roll through experimental narrative. A delicate Brazilian assemblage that follows a lonely geologist as he wanders through the barren terrain of northeastern ...

On this week's Grey's Anatomy, "Don't Deceive Me," we finally got to see the aftermath of Callie’s shocking revelation. Callie told Mark she was pregnant, and he was incredibly excited until he remembered that he was in love with Lexie and had to tell her.
When Mark told Lexie at the end of the episode that he got Callie pregnant, she walked out on him after pointing out that Mark was doing this to her for a second time.
Will she forgive him any time soon? It does not seem like Mark is willing to give up being the baby’s father to save his relationship with Lexie.

File this one under "never gonna happen, but fun as fuck to talk about."
Simon West, who historically has a pretty terrible director (Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider), was recently doing a press tour for the upcoming Jason Statham/Ben Foster film, The Mechanic. It's a film that I truly do hope is good, because it looks like fuckballs of fun and it also stars Tony Goldwyn and Donald Sutherland, both of whom I love.
Regardless, West was asked by Crave about 1997's cheezetacular crapfest Con Air (I mock, but I've seen it roughly 8 billion times, because it's ridiculously watchable and entertaining). Here's his response:
"I'd like to do Con Air 2... It'd be great. It's a matter of getting everybody together. There's so many people involved and it's about getting everybody to agree. But I'm going to bring it up to Nic. I'm going to...

It looks like Sam’s comment about Josie’s body shape have caused a crisis of confidence for the buxom beauty.
Earlier in the week Sam Pepper told the size 16 Bristol girl that it should be ‘illegal’ for her to wear a bikini, the comments were made worse by the fact that her boyfriend John James laughed at them.
Last night, worried that she has put on weight since entering the house, Josie moaned to John James:
“I’m freckly, I am fat, I have gappy teeth, so why do you still hang around me?”
The Australian hunk replied: “Because I love you, I really do.”
But she just blasted:
“You make the situation worse. You just strut around here get in the shower with your six pack out.”
“I feel really ashamed of myself.”
Josie then suggested that she and John James sleep in separate beds from now on,...

I'm sorry I missed updating you all about Cine Las Americas's Tuesday schedule, but I plead a case of Robert Downey Jr.-itis. I would've only seen one movie anyway, as only one was scheduled at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar that night. Speaking of which, I have to give a shout-out to the Alamo Lamar staff, which handled not one, not two, but three special events that night on top of a weekly series event, meaning every single theater was filled with unique programming in the early evening. What could have been a major cluster... mess, went off rather smoothly. Thank you, Alamo Lamar for that.
Wednesday night, well, you should've been there. Even with two more special screenings, including a special A Nightmare on Elm Street preview with Jackie Earle Haley in attendance and a marketing sneak of part of Toy Story 3 (college students only), things still...

Plus, Lady Gaga loves her little monsters, but she's not welcome at MoMA, Chelsea cupcakes, Glee rips off Friends, and Lea Michele likes puppies!
amfAR’s “Cruise for the Cure” this summer through the Baltics will feature none other than hunkadunk Cheyenne Jackson. Here’s hoping for a lot poolside swimsuit time!
Showtime has picked up Shameless from pilot to full series. The American version will star William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum, and was set in Baltimore the last time I looked. I’m normally not in favor or converting series to an American setting, and I’m still not sure how this translates, but the talent is brilliant, and with it being on Showtime, they can actually take things further that the original.
Somebody check on Kathy Griffin’s mom, because I’m sure she’s distraught. Thomas Angove, the Aussie inventor who gave the world wine-in-a-box, has...

I'm no expert on Tauron theology, but from what little I've seen, it seems like they're operating straight out of the Judeo-Christian book of Leviticus. Not the tattoos, of course, because that pisses Ot Yahweh off, but the literal "eye for an eye" business.
Unfortunately, Daniel's got four eyes to pay for, and no amount of Cubits or Caprican charm are going to satiate Tomas Vergis. (He's the guy Daniel had Joseph have Sam steal the McP from in the second episode, and apparently Sam killed two guys — Vergis' godchildren — in the process.)
So, Vergis rocks his fine self into town and tells Daniel that: a) He knows about how he stole the McP, and b) killed his godchildren, so now he's going to c) find everything Daniel loves and destroy it, while d) reverse-crushing Daniel's childhood dream of playing for the Caprica City Buccaneers.

Tonight is the season premiere of the sixth and final season of "Lost." I've had a great time writing weekly recaps of the show for its fourth and fifth seasons, and I'm looking forward to going out with a bang this time around. "Lost" is this decade's "Twin Peaks" or "The X-Files," one of those pop mystery shows that gets as much out of the questions as it does the answers. (And believe me, I'll get into that plenty over the course of the next few months.) But the purpose of this little post is just to let you all know that the "Lost" recaps have now been conveniently grouped into their own archive. It's right up there in the navbar, but if you don't believe me, just click here. I'm not sure which of our illustrious tech-minded staffers did the work, but just direct your compliments to me and...

Adam Lambert has recalled the advice that he was given by Madonna when the pair met last year. During his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show yesterday, the American Idol star recounted that he became "starstruck" when he met Madonna "for five minutes" at her New York apartment. "It was wild, I've looked up to her as a popstar... She came in with no make-up, yoga wear, totally Zen and her presence is very powerful, very intense," he said. "The first thing I said was, 'Oh my God!'. I said, 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm just really intimidated right now'. And she said, 'Why?'. "'Because I love you!'. And (more)...

"American Idol" star Adam Lambert is finding these days that he's pretty famous — there are few places he can go where he isn't recognized. And despite all the notoriety surrounding him after his controversial appearance on the American Music Awards in November, he's comfortable with the fact that people are touched by his music.
"The biggest change between before 'Idol' and now would probably just have to be the level of notoriety. I mean, it changes everything," he told Oprah Winfrey on her show Tuesday (January 19). "I try to go throughout my daily life just as if nothing has changed, but you don't have much anonymity anymore, which feels really good. People come up, and...

Happy New Year, Internet, and welcome to the first 2010 edition of This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book, but you can’t read them with the corresponding days because they all come out on Wednesday. Oops. To remind you what each day means, I’ve thrown in several subtitles for each day. Because I love you.
Since I ended last year’s edition with a quick “best of the year” list, I feel like I could make some wild prognostications about comics this year.
Dark Horse Comics will continue to live up to its name by publishing proper good comics that I like. This will prove doubly true if The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys comes out this year.
Ditto Image Comics, especially if Casanova returns this year.
With the conclusion of “Siege,” the Marvel Comics universe will see an end to “Dark Reign” and...

Rome -- Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story" will headline a 24-film competition lineup at September's Venice Film Festival, which is heavy on first and second films from up-and-coming directors.
The lineup includes five U.S. films, four each from Italy and France, four from Asia, two from the Middle East -- with all 23 films named Thursday as world premieres.
A 24th surprise competition pic to be announced during the fest would also be a world premiere, officials said. The fest will feature 71 world premieres.
"We are very pleased and very honored to announce this lineup," Venice artistic director Marco Mueller said in a briefing Thursday, where Fatih Akin's comedy "Soul Kitchen"; "Accident," a thriller from China's Cheang Pou; and "A Single Man," a drama from Tom Ford starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, were revealed as part of the lineup.
All told, the fest will feature 16 first works and nine second works.
