In the realm of quintessentially British pop culture staples, few have quite the sheer amount of content as Doctor Who. For over fifty years, the escapades of the time-traveling Doctor and his many companions have delighted audiences the world over, spanning countless serials, TV episodes, audio dramas, comic books, and novels. Unfortunately, when it comes to cinema, the good Doctor is a lot less prolific.
Despite many, many studio attempts (covered in the wonderful Now on the Big Screen by Charles Norton), only three adaptations of Doctor Who ever made it to film. The Canadian TV movie Doctor Who in the ’90s, starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, is commonly agreed to be a weak oddity, but that’s not what this article is about. Because in the mid-60s, the British horror studio Amicus Pictures got Peter Cushing, one of the greatest horror actors ever, to step in...

Olive Films has released the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy "Who's Minding the Store?" on Blu-ray. The film was made at the peak of Lewis's solo career following the breakup of Martin and Lewis some years before. The movie was directed by Frank Tashlin, who collaborated with Lewis on his best productions. It can be argued that, with the exception of Lewis's inspired "The Nutty Professor" (released the same year as "Store"), his work never reached the heights that he achieved by working with Tashlin, a talented director and screenwriter who never quite got the acclaim he deserved. "Store" is one of Lewis's best movies because it's also one of his funniest. He plays Norman Phiffier, a nerdy manchild who fails at even the most elementary of careers. When we meet him he's trying to make ends meet by running his own dog-walking service, which provides some amusing sight...

With an anniversary reunion in the pipeline, we celebrate macabre, inventive, brilliant comedy series The League Of Gentlemen...
“Would you describe yourself as an egregious person?” I asked Reece Shearsmith at a recent Q&A. I was nervous. Everyone else had asked questions about his writing, complimented his performances and asked about the upcoming series of Inside No 9. I just wanted to see how he’d respond. “Piss off,” he said. Actually, I shouldn’t put that in quotation marks because that’s not really what he said. What he really said was much more blue but very jovial and the audience all laughed. Phew. I was initially apprehensive that no one would get the reference but I needn’t have been. It turns out The League Of Gentlemen has a timelessness to it and a special place in the hearts of comedy fans that no other show,...

This Saturday evening, Mark Gatiss will take us on a trip to Mars. 1881 Mars, to be precise, where the Doctor and Bill find themselves mystified by the presence of a group of Victorian colonists. The biggest advantage that the writers of Humans have in going into their second series is the sheer ambiguity of language and meaning. As the show expands its scope (among other things, by offering glimpses of the global impact of the Synths), it also seeks to expand its line of philosophical questioning. There’s an awful lot to pack in and it helps that so much of it can be done through the subtle layering of meaning and intent. A prominent example occurs early in the narrative,...

The Black Crook Conceived and Directed by Joshua William Gelb Abrons Arts Center, NYC September 17-October 7, 2016
The Black Crook, subtitled An Original, Magical and Spectacular Musical Drama, begins with playwright Charles M. Barras (Steven Rattazzi) stutteringly pitching the play The Black Crook to William Wheatley (Merlin Whitehawk), producing manager of Niblo's Garden, a theater that stood, in several incarnations, on Broadway near Prince Street from 1823-1895. This current production of The Black Crook adapts Barras's 1866 original and weaves throughout the adaptation a frame narrative that tracks the origins and success of what was a hugely influential piece of theater. Wheatley and his business partners combined Barras's melodrama with performances by a Parisian ballet troupe and other spectacular interludes, and the result, because of its single unifying plot, is often credited as the first book musical in American theatrical history (the program notes that the song "I Said to My Love,...

God is a Verb Written by Gavin Broady Directed by Chad Lindsey Hook & Eye Theater, The Actors Fund Art Center, NYC November 4-November 21, 2015
Gavin Broady and the Hook and Eye Theater company’s outstanding new play God is a Verb invites audiences to step out of the box and into the geodesic dome. This bold, visually and intellectually exciting production revolves around quirky theorist, designer, and inventor R. Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983), but it is assertively not, as the program reminds us, a biographical piece. Instead, billed as an absurdist comedy, it takes place within its subject's mind, focusing on his decades-long World Game Project but skillfully interweaving the personal and the political, the individual and the global, throughout its 100 compelling minutes.

From Thomas F Wilson in Back To The Future to Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off - when actors play multiple roles...
The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).
It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

Gotham Season 1, Episode 22: ‘All Happy Families Are Alike’
Written by Bruno Heller
Directed by Danny Cannon
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
In the Pilot episode of Gotham, the Penguin warns Gordon that there will be a war coming to Gotham City, a war that would possibly result in a change of power amongst the crime bosses. As it turns out, Penguin was not merely playing Cassandra predicting doom for Gotham, but planned for the war to happen all along. Ever since the Wayne Murders, the Falcone crime empire began crumbling, due to having lost one of its pillars. This left Falcone weak in his reign, which prompted all of the crime bosses under him to sniff around and try to tear him down. Although the Wayne Murderer remains a mystery, the finale resolves Falcone’s time in power, relinquishing him to possibly make way for the dawn...

‘Earth 2′ #29
Written by Marguerite Bennett & Mike Johnson
Pencils by Andy Smith; Inks by Trevor Scott
Published by DC Comics
‘Earth 2’ #29 marks the torch passing from series writer Tom Taylor to Marguerite Bennett and her fellow ‘Earth 2: World’s End’ writing team. Unfortunately, it’s off to a rough start as #29 marks the first genuinely bad issue in nearly two and half years of solid releases.
With the start of “World’s End,’ the ‘Earth 2’ main book has changed to fit alongside its sibling series’ format. That’s not to say the change was bad. In fact, the first issue to tie into ‘World’s End’ is one of the greatest in the entire series. However, it’s clear now that ‘Earth 2’ is mostly a book that serves to better flesh out story points and characters not fully explored in ‘World’s End.’

Last week, we talked about various ways in which Doctor Who could have turned out very differently than it did – either because an actor stayed on longer than he did, or a pilot went to series, or things simply worked out in other ways. We covered some of the eternal burning questions, such as what would have happened if the Daleks had gotten their own series, or what would have happened if Sarah Jane Smith had gotten her own series far, far earlier than she did. For the most part, our answers were purely speculative – no one really knows what would have happened if, say, Hartnell had been forced out of the series earlier than he was by his bosses. But in a few cases, we know what could have been, and it makes some of us tear our hair out. Or maybe that’s just us…

Dr Who. Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 Ad (1966)
As far as odd surnames go, 'Who' has to be up there. But that's just one of many examples where the treatment of the subject matter differs between the two 1960s Doctor Who movie spinoffs and their original TV counterparts. Made to capitalise on the rampant 'Dalekmania' and starring Peter Cushing as the time traveller, a contemporary re-viewing provides a fascinating trip back to a comparatively innocent era where the draw of seeing "motorised dustbins" from Skaro in widescreen Technicolor was a big selling point.

"Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dr. Who."

Read our entirely spoiler-free review of Deep Breath, here.
Not one but two posh UK premieres happened yesterday for Deep Breath, the Doctor Who series eight opener, the first in Cardiff and the second in London.
After each screening, Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat came out to peals of applause to talk about the episode (we’ve squirrelled those bits away until after the BBC One broadcast) the new Doctor, his relationship with Clara, and more. Amongst other things, read about Capaldi's audition for the role, first experience of stepping inside the Tardis, and, if he could, what he would tell his eight-year-old Doctor Who-fan self...

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

The cast of "Gotham" on Fox continues to grow. Following the announcement that Ben McKenzie will play the lead of James Gordon on the show, Fox has revealed four more actors joining the series, including two classic "Batman" characters.
Sean Pertwee ("Elementary," "Luther") will play Alfred Pennyworth. His character is described as "a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London [who] has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he's fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne."
Robin Lord Taylor ("The Walking Dead") has been tapped to portray Oswald Cobblepot, better known to "Batman" fans as The Penguin. He was most memorably played on the big screen by Danny DeVito in 1992's "Batman Returns." His character description reads, "With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

The Hollywood star is always headline news – for her movies, relationships and extendend family. And her latest claims about the paternity of her son have reopened the bitter wounds from her split from Woody Allen
For a while, Mia Farrow was a genuine Surrey housewife. In a life of bright lights and dark, dark shadows, this must surely count as one of the most unusual periods of them all: a moment of apparent stability and respectability in the late 70s and early 80s. During this time, she picked up her twin sons Matthew and Sascha by the conductor André Previn from their ballet classes and music lessons and took them back to the family home in Leigh, much as if she had never been the daughter of Tarzan's Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), nor the young bride of Frank Sinatra.
But this was the era when the notion of adopting needy children took hold.

Andrew counts down Doctor Who's top 10 Dalek stories, from Invasion Earth to The Power of the Daleks...
A cosmos without the Daleks scarcely bears thinking about.
Without the mutated remnants of the seemingly indestructible planet Skaro, we don't know if Doctor Who would have survived. If Terry Nation had dreamt up the Voord to menace Barbara in the series fifth episode, Den of Geek may well be paying tribute to Doctor Who as an obscure cult concern, cherished by a few but forgotten by many. Instead, we do things like this.
This list is not limited to the television series, because Doctor Who isn't limited to the television series. And hey, why not use our Comments Section to add your own list or express disbelief that I've not included Evil of the Daleks in mine?
10. Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.
Amongst the many, many films making their presence felt out in Toronto will be Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave, which launched a powerful first trailer earlier in the month. The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.
Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.

Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

From The Wild Child to Nell, the movies have long told stories of children found in the woods raised by animals but the title creature that rears the little girls in the new horror film Mama is meaner than a snake and uglier than Martin Lawrence in drag. Moviegoers looking for a scary time at the movies without the gore could do worse than Mama, a PG13 shocker from producer Guillermo del Toro. It’s an engrossing, if modest exercise in thrills that works hard to present an intelligent and unique premise. Mama opens strong but falls apart in its underdeveloped second half with scares manufactured from cliches and an overdramatic climax.
Mama is a throwback fairy-tale style horror film with a less-is-more approach to its violence, yet it opens ugly with a man abducting his two young daughters and preparing to shoot them in the back of their heads.

After watching the tense trailer for Jonathan Zarantonello's The Butterfly Room you have to ask yourself, what kind of parent would leave their child in the hands of Barbara Steele? It's bad news for little girls and their dolls.
The cast is a who’s who of women in horror including Camille Keaton, Adrienne King, P.J. Soles, Heather Langenkamp, Erin Leehrsen and Barbara freakin’ Steele. It’s like a scream queen convention in movie form.
A few years back I spoke very briefly with Camille Keaton about her small role in The Butterfly Room and what she told me is a total spoiler, so click here to read her interview at your own risk.
As a fan of any movie that involves psychotic women, especially one that puts so many crazy women together on one screen, it looks pretty amazing. Read the synopsis and watch the trailer:

Lifetime's 15-car pileup of beefcake, The Client List just recruited Trevor Donovan's hot bod to Jennifer Love Hewitt's massage parlor of ill repute, Zap2It reports. Donovan will play a pro football player with a "wacky fetish." I'm hoping that it turns out he needs to have access to his favorite gay pop culture blog to... er, enjoy himself.
I'm pretty sure this is a first — there are Game of Thrones-branded craft beers coming. (Has there been another TV show with a craft beer tie-in?) The first release will be an "Iron Throne Blonde Ale" which will be available for the series' March 31 season premiere. My inner beer snob keeps screaming that it will still be too cool to be drinking blonde ales on March 31.
Is Rosie O'Donnell taking Sharon Osbourne's seat on the...

Chicken With Plums (Poulet Aux Prunes) is an enchanting confection of a movie. I was unexpectedly delighted by this unique movie. It is the follow-up film from co-directors Iranian Marjane Satrapi and Frenchman Vincent Paronnaud to their 2007 film Persepolis, a film I did not see (despite hearing good buzz) as I’m not big on animation; this movie has made me reconsider.
My biggest complaint about this movie is with its title: it refers to a trifling detail in the film, and waiting to discover its significance was distracting. Also, it sounds like a movie about food, non? And even if it were about food, in an age of foodies and Top Chef, it’s not an appealing dish. It’s hard to believe that the imagination is on display on screen couldn’t come up with something more appealing.

Because the main action of Tracy Letts's play August: Osage County revolves around the disappearance of family patriarch Beverly Weston, it's not much of a spoiler to tell you that's a tiny role. But Beverly gets one big monologue at the beginning of the play before the other members of his family-- namely his wife Violet and daughter Barbara-- take center stage, and that means the movie adaptation needs to cast an excellent actor to play him. The cast of the movie version of August: Osage County is already crammed full of heavy hitters, but now they've managed to add one more, with Sam Shepard signing on to play Beverly. That news comes from Variety, where they note that production on the film-- with The Company Men's John Wells directing from Letts's own script-- is set to start next month. Shepard will be one of may boldface...
