A real disappointment
Filmmaker Jesús Franco is considered a disciple of the Marquis de Sade, a famous French libertine philosopher and writer of the 18th century. However, Franco never directed a film faithful to Sade's works. The Spanish filmmaker was never interested in discussing philosophy in his films and seemed to feel a strange repulsion for female and male sodomy (sodomy being the favorite practice of the divine Marquis). I think that most of those who study Franco's work have never read a book by Sade and that's why they think that films like Justine (1969) and Eugenie (1970) are adaptations of works by the French philosopher. A gigantic mistake.
In the 1980s, Franco directed several pornographic films for a Spanish production company called Fervi Films. Perhaps the most famous (and ridiculous) of them is "El Ojete de Lulú", starring Lina Romay and Mabel Escaño (two wonderful actresses and wasted here). The film shows the dialogue between Lulú's anus and vagina (with Lina dubbing the first and Franco himself dubbing the second!). However, based on this premise, it was to be expected that the film would show a lot of vaginal and anal intercourse, right? Wrong. Being a Franco film, what we see is a lot of fellatio on flaccid penises and a lot of poorly staged and tedious lesbian sex. The only possible anal penetration in the entire film doesn't last a minute and is doubtful as the camera angle doesn't allow the viewer to see whether there was real anal penetration or not. A real disappointment. Franco, unlike Sade, hated anal sex and couldn't care less about philosophy.
