havana-226 June 2002
i see hundreds of student films- this is tops. james cox is a fantastic director- he moves the camera, tells the story and uses music in a way that is far advanced for his years. no wonder he got a feature from this film.

Memory's a bit foggy...
anticipated10 October 2005
Saw this at Sundance one of the first years I attended the festival - blew me away...

It went by much too fast, and I've never been able to find it again. I figured it would show up on a compilation somewhere, but still no joy. My memory's foggy on the details - I just remember being surprised over and over again, and on the edge of my seat.

Anyone reading this have any leads? Online, DVD, beat-up VHS copy - I'd try to make it worth your while...

Over the years, I've probably seen over 200 short films (used to live near Aspen where they have an incredible Shorts Fest in April). This definitely ranks among my favorites, and I hope to see it again!

Many thanks to anyone with leads on how to see it :)

Excellent short film
deadkerouac4 March 2000
I saw this short film on HBO the other day and absolutely loved it. Eight different characters, eight different perspectives. At first I was confused by the way the story was moving along, but then I realized that it was just one scene being shown over and over again, just to show us the different perspectives of the characters.

At first, you think the clerks are yelling at the teenager for stealing. They speak in their own language, which I (and Chris the teenager, played convincingly by Eleonore Hendricks) cannot understand. The perspective of the clerks dispels that view. I didn't realize how wonderful the short really is until the last two scenes.

Excellent short film. Hopefully, the director James Cox can turn the short into a feature length film with the same cast, or win us over with a whole new film.

Very clever in terms of content and production - the writer/director shows great potential

The film focuses on a short time period in a corner store. In the store are a young junkie girl, the two store owners, a group of men who are close to getting a record deal and a pair of Orientals who are heavily into break dancing. We see the same scene from all different perspectives.

This short tricks everyone who watches it. We all miss the point for the first few minutes – I didn't catch on immediately that the time skips back and forward and that we see the same few minutes over and over again from with the focus on different characters. Each character's bit is interesting in itself, but the real reward here is the issue of perspective.

We assume things that are proved wrong when we see it from another perspective – eg the two store keepers yell in a foreign language at the junkie girl, we assume they are insulting her, but their view reveals something else. This makes the short for me, it makes it clever and produces an interesting point that stays with you.

The direction is good – technically competent and imaginative. However the editing is the best bit, the time skips back and forward with no sign that it's happened – the first time it's disorientating but after that it's clever. The cast are good, particularly the store keepers and the junkie girl.

Overall this film is very clever in terms of content and production. The director has already been snatched up by a studio for motion picture work – I hope he can brig this same imagination and intelligence to his films as he did to this short.

Fantastic Short
devildel8 January 2001
I cannot stress enough the artistic and fantastic way this short was written shot and edited. Mr Cox and his editors do a superb job of showing the interaction of 4 different groups illustrating not only the errors in their perceptions of others and events around them, but also of our own errors and prejudices. Works best as a short though you may wish for it to be longer. 5 stars out of 5

This is a wonderful short! The idea behind it makes it very unique and very entrancing. I was lucky enough to get to view this at college. I was wondering though if anyone knows where to/ how to obtain a copy? Would love to see it again! thanks
