Very Visual Romantic Vehicle With Lots of Music
lchadbou-326-2659212 February 2021
This late 1930s Libertad Lemarque Argentine vehicle is decidedly sentimental but plays well even for a non Spanish speaking viewer because it is very visual, almost like a silent film, and because the twists and turns of the complicated melodramatic plot are punctuated by extensive use of music. There are also some nice Art Deco settings. After her repressive guardian prevents the heroine, fresh out of a convent, from being with the man he loves, he marries a friend of hers instead. She is further prevented from seeing him when she has to be separated because of illness and she is then sent to jail when she gets into an altercation with a woman the man brings home from a party. After all this is it still possible that there will be a happy ending?
