Sylvester Stallone and his former rival Arnold Schwarzenegger were both Hollywood’s premiere action stars back in their heyday. But Stallone felt it was much easier for Schwarzenegger and others to get away with funny one-liners back then.

Stallone and Schwarzenegger had similar trajectories and career paths. They were both primarily known for their classic action films, and the physical ability they brought to their roles.
But Stallone felt there was an important comedic element separating his films from the likes of Schwarzenegger’s and others. At the time, Stallone believed audiences were more willing to accept comedy in a Schwarzenegger picture than in a Stallone movie.
“Arnold and Bruce Willis can get away with things that I can’t. For example, they can make jokes about what they’re doing.

In the annals of pop culture rivalries – those where the subjects rose at the same time and were constantly at battle in their field – there’s one that truly matters the most…and it ain’t Magic vs. Bird. For movie fans of the ‘80s and ‘90s, the action rivalry came down to who was better: Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone? And yes, you had to pick one…after all, Sly did.
In Netflix’s new three-part docuseries Arnold, Stallone notes that he and Schwarzenegger were constantly pitted against each other. “We became incredibly competitive…Like [Muhammad] Ali and [Joe] Frazier, or great warriors that are traveling the same course: There was only room for one of us.” That one? It’s got to be Arnold, Stallone admits, saying, “He was superior. He just had all the answers…He had the body. He had the strength. That was his character…He wanted to be number one.

We’re at least a decade past the point at which seeing a so-called “movie star” deigning to grace the small screen could be conceived of as a novelty. Heck, we’re coming off a spring in which Harrison Ford was starring in multiple television shows at the same time.
Still, there’s an immediate pleasure that comes from witnessing former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger make a late arrival to the streaming landscape as the star of Netflix’s new action comedy Fubar.
Like his Planet Hollywood comrade Sylvester Stallone, currently getting to relive his Oscar and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot salad days on the Paramount+ dime, Schwarzenegger is using his streaming platform as something of a time machine.

The fan that Taylor Swift defended Saturday night on the second night of her three-show stop at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia has told Good Morning America what happened.
The “Anti-Hero” singer saw a security guard interrupt one of her fans dancing, and she spoke up during her performance of “Bad Blood” off her “1989” album.
“I was dancing, and I mean, she was right in front of me, we had front-row seats so she was right in front of me singing ‘Bad Blood,; one of my favorite songs,” Kelly Kelly said in a video segment you can watch above.

The release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is one of the biggest moments in MCU, building on Phase Five and capping off what most consider to be the best trilogy in the entire franchise. Nabbing Sylvester Stallone for the second Guardians was a major get, as was signing him for the final installment. But getting him to say a line that involved bowel movements? That was a little bit more challenging…
In a joint interview with CinemaBlend, writer/director James Gunn and Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt recalled the exchange between Gunn and Stallone (who plays Ravager Stakar Ogord) on the set of the third Guardians, in which Gunn tried to coax Stallone into saying what would have been one of the more juvenile lines of his career. According to Pratt, Stallone was supposed to say, “‘I gotta go take a shit.’ And [Stallone] goes, ‘I’m not going to say that,...

Grab some cumin and turmeric, because it's once again time to spice up your life! In November, Spice Girls rereleased their seminal 1997 album "Spiceworld" to celebrate its 25th anniversary. On March 9, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their single "Stop," they also released a new alternative version of the music video for the track. "Stop" hit No. 2 on the UK Singles chart and No. 16 on the Billboard Top 100. It was one of their last singles before Gerri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice) left the band later that year. Watch the video above!
The new alternative video shows, from start to finish, the five women dancing in the street in unison in Ireland. Shots from the dance appear in the original "Stop" video in much smaller segments. In the new video, their choreography is much clearer - and it would make an enjoyable TikTok dance challenge. The new and original videos were...

Adam McKay is taking aim at the “mad evil” of Exxon in a new spoof short film speaking out on climate change.
The “Don’t Look Up” director produced “A Love Letter to Exxon from Darth Vader,” helmed by Alice Park. “A long time ago, in our own galaxy, ExxonMobil knew that their product would destroy our planet,” the synopsis reads. “But instead of warning the public, they lied about the climate crisis so they could make trillions in profits. That’s mad evil. The type of evil that someone like Darth Vader respects. It’s sort of like the (very real) friendship medal that Vladimir Putin gave former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson for helping expand Russian oil and gas production and fuel their war machine.”

Fox's Sunday night animation lineup is about to collide, if only for a moment. In a clip from this week's episode of "Family Guy," which was just released by Entertainment Weekly, Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane) ends up at Bob's Burgers restaurant, where he pulls up a stool alongside Homer Simpson. It's less a major crossover moment than a quick gag, but "Bob's Burgers" star H. John Benjamin does make a voiceover guest appearance as the chef we know and love from the ever-underrated wharf restaurant.
The scene, which you can watch now below or on the Animation Domination YouTube channel, starts with Peter Griffin instantly trying to find a way to extricate himself from the situation when his wife, Lois (Alex Borstein) starts describing a dream she had the night before. "Eh-heh," he says while backing away, first out of the house and then down the street before eventually backing...

Rian Johnson's Peacock series "Poker Face" has had some serious talent both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes, but episode 8, "The Orpheus Syndrome," employed the talents of one of the greatest special effects masters in Hollywood history.
The episode featured the work of visual effects legend Phil Tippett, who helped bring the creatures of "Star Wars" to life and won his first Academy Award for his work on "Return of the Jedi." Tippett, who has worked in the industry for decades, provided all of the models and set pieces for the episode, which centers around a special effects artist named Arthur (Nick Nolte) who feels guilty about a tragic death on a production years before. Arthur's workshop is the stuff of dreams and nightmares, with Tippett creations peeking from every nook and cranny. “Healthy,” “vigorous,” and “fit to serve” were some of the words President Joe Biden’s physician used to describe history’s oldest president after a routine exam Thursday. But Stephen Colbert noted that some of the results aren’t in yet.
“Now, here’s the thing,” Colbert said. “We don’t have the full results yet, but we do know the president tested positive for ‘old af.'”
Biden went in for his annual physical earlier in the day at Walter Reed Hospital. He had a small lesion on his chest that was removed for a biopsy; the results are still pending. The president also had exams that showed his head, ears, eyes, nose, and throat were normal.

Legendary guitarist Dave Davies implored Twitter owner Elon Musk to “please stop putting warnings” on all of The Kinks posts, noting it is “a brand name” and not, as Twitter keeps labeling it, “sensitive content.”
Davies co-founded The Kinks with his brother Ray in 1963, and they are now a lifetime removed from being photographed wearing black leather and holding whips. But while the band is fondly remembered for timeless melodies and sharp observational writing, their provocative name continues to agitate the algorithms.
“Dear @elonmusk would @Twitter please stop putting warnings on everything from ‘the Kinks’. We are just trying to promote our Kinks music,” Davies, 76, wrote on Twitter. He included a screenshot of a label that read, “We put a warning on this Tweet because it might have sensitive content.”

1993 was an important year for Sylvester Stallone. After a long string of flops, Renny Harlin’s mountaineering epic Cliffhanger was the much-needed international hit Sly needed, with the film helping to reaffirm his position as one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood. But, before that movie had ever come out, Sly was shooting his second film of the year, once which, in the end, would make less money than Cliffhanger but would go on to achieve legendary cult status. Almost thirty years later, it remains Stallone’s most famous film featuring a character that isn’t named Rocky or Rambo. The movie, of course, is Demolition Man.

Sylvester Stallone recruited many action stars for his financially successful The Expendables franchise. WWE megastar Stone Cold Steve Austin would eventually find himself pitted against Stallone in the first movie.
But when a sequence in the film led to Austin accidentally breaking Stallone’s neck, Austin might have panicked more than anyone.

Austin wasn’t exactly new to acting when he joined The Expendables. By then, he’d already had starring roles in features like The Condemned and Damage. But Expendables was one of the biggest films Austin ever participated in at the time. It saw the former WWE champion working alongside Stallone for the first time, who he had nothing but respect for.
“He knows action movies and he knows the product that he’s out to deliver,” Austin once said in an interview with Reel Rave.

Actors aren’t created equal. Some are more talented. Others are considered more beautiful. Some are loved by millions of devoted fans, whereas others… not so much. But if there’s one thing all the famous actors in the world have in common, it is that they are all crazy rich.
Still, even in this case, some stars shine brighter. And we don’t say that figuratively.
The wealthiest actors in Hollywood can literally shine with all the money they have made through lucrative paychecks, production credits, investments, and other side hustles. Nine-figure fortunes are slowly becoming a standard among the top Hollywood actors, with many just on the brink of becoming billionaires.
Can you guess which actors we’re talking about? Likely so, but as we’ll uncover in a moment, some names might be a surprise to find a place on this list. So, without any further ado,...

Translated by Andrey Kartashov. Originally published in Outskirts Film Magazine, an English-language biannual magazine of around 160 pages per issue, made up of original essays, interviews, reviews, and a single large dossier, the first of which is devoted to Soviet filmmaker Boris Barnet. It is now available to buy from the Outskirts e-shop.Final films are doomed to failure. Could it be, perhaps, because at that point their directors have broken away from any expectations of what a film “must” be? A plot summary of Boris Barnet’s final film Whistle Stop fits easily into just a few short sentences. The scientist Pavel Pavlovich, member of the Soviet Academy, goes to the countryside for a vacation with his easel and paints. Several seemingly trivial scenes from village life ensue. A tractor runs away from its owner. A friendly bull pays Pavel Pavlovich a visit. Kids next door insist on building a stove.

Marilyn Monroe’s first screen performance after studying with Lee Strasberg at the Actor’s Studio finally convinced critics that she was indeed an accomplished actress (in a role originated onstage by Kim Stanley). Director Joshua Logan filmed Marilyn’s live rendition of “That Old Black Magic” with two cameras and an offscreen orchestra, eliminating the need for lip-synching to playback, and often let her takes run on and on without stopping so he could cull the best moments in the editing room.

Two days after reuniting with Porno for Pyros, Perry Farrell reconvened with Jane’s Addiction as part of the Lolla2020 livestream, a four-day virtual event taking place over the same long weekend as the Covid-cancelled Lollapalooza 2020.
Performing from a Los Angeles soundstage surrounded by video screens — just the band’s second gig in the past three years — Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Chris Chaney unearthed “I Would for You,” a track from the band’s eponymous 1987 quasi-live LP, for the first time in eight years, as...

“Nothing will stop The New Mutants,” reads the tag line in the new trailer for the delays-dealt Marvel movie. It’s a defiant statement that seems to address the absurd awkwardness endured by the 2017-shot film in its seemingly interminable quest to reach a release. Yet, the trailer in question also signals a crucial promotional stop: a virtual panel set for the Covid-quarantined Comic-Con@Home festivities, which are to be held in place of Comic-Con 2020.
20th Century Fox Studios, which originally produced the film that now resides under the Disney corporate umbrella, has announced that The New Mutants will hold its panel on Thursday, July 23 at 2 p.m. Pt, with Ira Madison III set to host a discussion with the film’s cast—which consists of Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga—and director Josh Boone.

Updated Friday at 10:15Am Pt with Unilever news. Unilever, the owner of a wide range of brands from Dove soap to Lipton tea, has joined a growing advertiser boycott of Facebook.
The boycott over Facebook’s inability to rein in misinformation and objectionable speech has gained momentum this week and is blamed for sending Facebook stock down 7% in Friday trading.
In a blog post, the company said it is including Twitter in its social media pullback, along with Facebook and Instagram, through the end of 2020. It said the decision was based on its own approach to corporate responsibility as well as “the polarized atmosphere in the U.S.” It added, “Continuing to advertise on these platforms at this time would not add value to people and society. We will be monitoring ongoing and will revisit our current position if necessary.”
Unilever is not changing its total planned media investment in the U.

Quirky cases are a hit or miss proposition. Sometimes they are interesting, other times silly.
Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 Episode 6 looked like it was going to be ridiculous from the previews, but turned out to be much better than expected.
The case of the hour involved the murder of a cancer patient in what looked like an abandoned hospital. In actuality, it turned out to be a new wing that was still being worked on.
The suggestion that it was a ghost who killed her was silly, but it turned out to be an interesting clue.
Multiple murders, a ghost killer... sounds like something I would have heard about.

Not unlike the previous year, a whopping eight thousand plus short films were submitted to Sundance this year. Among some of the filmmaker names that we are already familiar with, we find several feature filmmakers moonlighting back to the short form; basically the short is healthier than ever. Topping the 2015 crop, we have Jake Mahaffy (whose feature, Free in Deed appears to be somewhere in post) who contributes to our understanding of 13th century rule with the year specific, A.D. 1363, The End of Chivalry. We have Cutie and the Boxer helmer working in the fiction form with Hugh the Hunter and form the same vintage 2013 year, fellow feature film helmer Shaka King (director of Newlyweeds) turns in a short in Mulignans (see pic above). Michael Mohan who has been to Sundance with features One Too Many Dates and Save the Date, returns with Pink Grapefruit.

There will be some Eloise and Lena Dunham, protests from Hong Kong, self-declared pop-ups from Canada, and unbelievable animated images of the final moments of a World War II hero. Those are just a few of the offerings among the 60 short films revealed today by the Sundance Film Festival. In the last of its four official announcements, the 31st annual Park City shindig rolled out an eclectic mix culled from the 8,061 submissions in the category that perhaps shows the true scope of Sundance most acutely.
The fest runs January 22-February 1. (As in past years, Deadline co-Editor-in-Chief, Film Mike Fleming Jr. and myself will be in Park City.)

I'm not a big believer in canons; they are, in my view, a notoriously suspect lot, prone to egregious oversight on the part of the overweening cultural gatekeepers who are too often charged with constructing them. Consider that an apology up front. This list of twenty-five essential films from the African Diaspora does and does not reflect my taste solely. Much impute was gathered from scholars, filmmakers, hustlers of various sorts and several individuals whose genius dwarfs my own. That said, thanks to the fine folks here at Fandor, I got to make the final call. It was, of course, impossible to watch all of these films in the form they were meant to be seen in. Not every film got a fair day in court. Some of these films I've watched multiple times in an actual cinema while others I've only glared at on VHS rips that miraculously ended up on YouTube.
