Beanie Feldstein might be the younger sister of Jonah Hill, but after “Lady Bird,” she doesn’t need a famous relative to make her name stand out. Currently holding her own opposite Bette Midler on Broadway’s “Hello, Dolly!” while “Lady Bird” breaks box office records, Feldstein — who plays the best friend to the movie’s wayward teen, played by Saoirse Ronan — may be the year’s most exciting discovery.
With all due respect to the brilliant cast of “Lady Bird,” if a 23-year-old relative unknown can hold her own against Bette Midler, the rest of the world doesn’t stand a chance. Greta Gerwig’s fine-tuned directorial has been called “beautiful,” “insightful,” and “perfection”—and that’s just by New York Times film critic A.O. Scott. The movie is led by a winsome Ronan and fiercely commanding Laurie Metcalf, but Feldstein’s talent is established over the course of the movie.

Anyone who has seen Greta Gerwig’s marvelous “Lady Bird” knows the film owes a lot of its charm to Dave Matthews’ “Crash Into Me.” The song appears numerous times throughout the story and is used to mark pivotal moments of the eponymous character’s heartbreak and self-realization.

Gerwig revealed to Seth Meyers that the script included all of the music cues, including Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River” and Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket,” and that she personally wrote letters to the three musicians in order to request permission to license their tracks. Meyers printed out these letters and shared them with the audience, and let’s just say they are incredibly adorable.
The writer-director told Matthews that “Crash Into Me” was the “most romantic song ever”:

This hasn’t exactly been a great year for men. The male brand has seen better days. The product is still the same as it’s been for the last few millennia — the patriarchy is one hell of a preservative — but its iron hold on the marketplace is slipping. Society as a whole is finally coming to grips with a grim fact that so many people had already learned the hard way, that so many people had been silenced and shamed into keeping like a secret: Men are defective.
That’s not to say that all men are broken, but rather that all men are capable of the abuses for which the worst of us are now being ex-communicated, that all men are culpable for allowing those abuses to continue, and that all men are corruptible when endowed with the power that we have always assumed as a natural right.

For the second straight weekend, a strongly reviewed new film with a central female character broke through the clutter of this mixed fall season to great success. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Fox Searchlight) joined “Lady Bird” (A24) as the best starts among the many top titles vying for attention, and both did so by a wide margin above other films. “Lady Bird” added other top cities and proved its first week was no fluke, showing results unequaled since “La La Land” last year.
The grosses in both cases are early results, but the films look in prime position for both greater success and maximum attention just as the awards jockeying is reaching high gear. And given that both are female-centered, and not historical figure-based like so many other titles, makes them even more vital at the moment.

Go 8-Bit's Steve McNeil salutes the PS4 and its commitment to retro gaming...
If you’ve got a PS4, you might assume it’s just one of those new-fangled computer gaming devices the young people use for whizzbang graphics and whatnot. But it’s actually host to a hidden treasure trove of retro classics too. You’d be forgiven for not noticing, as many of them are buried in the darker corners of the Playstation Store, but they’ll languish there no longer – here’s what you’ve been missing out on…unless you’ve already bought them, in which case, as you were…

Want to catch up on the wonderful Neo Geo software catalogue without breaking the bank? Talk to Nintendo...
When the Nintendo Switch was announced last October, the world united as one to celebrate this great opportunity to purchase an emulated version of Super Mario Bros on the Nes on a new system for the 400th time. It got more sincerely excited about the prospect of being able to take Gamecube and/or Wii titles ‘on the go’. The Virtual Console (Nintendo’s online retro game store) has become an integral part of Nintendo’s offerings, having formed a central part of its systems’ game library for Wii, 3Ds and Wii U.
However, when the system arrived, the Virtual Console wasn’t there. Indeed, there was little in the way of ‘online’ at all, just a vague notion that things would be appearing later in the year. Given...
