The latest Marvel franchise hero is an incredible shrinking secret agent with powers wholly unlike his fellow Avengers. Ex-con Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is motivated by sentimental family connection issues, and so is everyone else. The Sci-fi ideas come off very well via imaginative CGI effects and the 3-D is great, too. Marvel’s Ant-Man, which was an international box office smash this summer, is also a schizophrenic movie demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of working within a shared universe. Where James Gunn was given a corner of the universe to play with the Guardians of the Galaxy allowing him to be cheeky and amusing while introducing cosmic threats that will dovetail in future films, Edgar Wright’s original ideas were too comedic and “out there” to fit in the terrestrial threads already in place.
Despite Wright working on this for years and coming close to bringing his vision to the Avengers’ world, it ultimately fell apart when too many compromises were demanded in order to fit in more closely with the tone and feel of those films. Wright walked and was replaced by director Peyton Reed, best known for the fresh-feeling Bring it On.

Falling Skies felt like wheel-spin this week, but its portrayal of war continues to impress. Here's Ron's review...
This review contain spoilers.
5.4 Pope Breaks Bad
It seems that the characters on Falling Skies have had a hard time adjusting to the world of war. They've been fighting for three years, and admirably, they haven't stopped fighting. That's one of the reasons Cochise and the other Volm are impressed by the inferior but troublesome race of man-animals using primitive gunpowder weapons to bring down Espheni. Of course, not all humans have the power of positive thinking best demonstrated by the Mason family. Some humans find themselves damaged by the war, haunted by those that have been lost (or those yet to be lost), becoming tired and hungry and traumatized. Some humans are ready to turn on their own kind.
The weak link in the Second Mass is, as always, John Pope.

The summer isn’t over yet, there’s still time for more Marvel action. As if the second Avengers movie wasn’t enough, we now have another entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (McU) entitled Ant-Man. Don’t worry. You may not have ever heard of him. It’s understandable. Don’t feel bad about it.
The film was written, and re-written, by Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Adam McKay, and Paul Rudd. The film was originally meant to be a writer/director venue, a la Joss Whedon or James Gunn, but Wright suffered from the dread disease called “creative differences” with the studio. The film was then handed over to Peyton Reed who has a varied television career up to this point and who was nearly selected for the slot of director for Thor 2: Dark World, if internet rumors can be believed.

It’s time for Marvel’s latest (and smallest) hero.
After a string of issues, and Edgar Wright eventually leaving the project, Ant-Man is finally coming this summer from Marvel and the second trailer dropped on Monday to try and win over audiences with the grain-sized superhero.
The second Marvel film of the year (following Avengers: Age of Ultron), Ant-Man is so far the black sheep of the whole cinematic universe. While it has a solid cast, the departure of Wright and the fact that the subject matter is relatively abstract has many people already writing off the movie, but the latest trailer hopes to change those thoughts.
The latest trailer for Ant-Man builds on the small sample that Marvel gave fans a few months back and expands the story portion with more insight into Corey Stoll’s villain, Yellowjacket. It also offers looks at Evangeline Lilly’s character while...

Mark counts down 15 great episodes of The Simpsons from its often-overlooked past 15 years...
Last week, we counted down our list of the top 50 episodes of The Simpsons ever made. It's a tough list to make, picking out less than 10 percent of the 552 episodes broadcast to date, to select the very best of the best. This is despite the off-hand consensus of some viewers that the series has been total rubbish since season 10.
We don't hold much truck with this assumption. The Simpsons is an institution and to suggest that more than half of it is garbage is more than a bit reductive. Admittedly, there's much to support the argument that few episodes produced in the twenty-first century can quite stand up to the genius of the earlier canon, but anything would suffer in comparison to that golden age of the show.
If you're one of the people who stopped watching the series after the nineties,...

Trains in cinema have always made for an excitable source within the realm of the comedy, drama, mystery or suspense pertaining to the plot of a particular film. The setting for the featured trains as the driving force of entertainment serves as the heart and soul of the action for the most part.
In some cases using trains as a last minute symbolic theme for a film can generate great impact that thrives and questions the motives and urgency of the characters and storyline (i.e. the climax scene in The Defiant Ones where the salt-and-pepper escaped convicts Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier try and make a desperate dash for permanent freedom on a speeding train en route to permanent freedom). Perhaps a train could also add an extra element of action-packed excitement in a film’s conclusive ending such as the uncontrollable commuter train in Speed?

Sundance Film Festival continues to be one of the most popular, and arguably one of the most important, events on the industry calendar, launching as it does some of the most prominent independent films at the start of each year.
This year will be no different, with Sundance announcing last night the initial line-up of films screening in competition, led by Song One, starring Anne Hathaway; Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart; Infinitely Polar Bear, with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana; Joe Swanberg’s Happy Christmas, starring Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, and Swanberg himself; The Skeleton Twins, with Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, and Ty Burrell; Life After Beth, with Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, and John C. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival is coming up in January and today, the Sundance Institute has named the films that will be in the U.S. and world competitions as well as Next, which is an oddly-named showcase for “Pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling.”
There will be 67 films competing across five different competition categories. That may sound like a lot, but that’s only the first half of the film announcements. Later on they will be announcing the remaining lineup of films being shown outside these competitions.
Overall, it’s an impressive batch of entries, with several surprises and a handful of very promising movies. Check out the full list below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “That the Festival has evolved and grown as it has over the past 30 years is a credit to both our audiences and our artists, who continue to find ways to take risks and open our minds to the power of story. An Emmy award, 177 episodes of employment and a place as one of the most memorable animated characters of all time - it's fair to say that Marcia Wallace had somewhat of an envious career.
Having moved to New York with just $148 in her pocket, Marcia Wallace's story is a remarkable one to say the least. While her iconic status may have been cemented by her voicing of Edna Krabappel in Matt Groening's The Simpsons, Wallace had already established herself across a number of art disciplines; including, but not limited to, Broadway, improv performance, chat show appearances, gameshows and nude performances (given in Dark of the Moon, having lost 100lbs from her previous weight of 230 pounds!).
Ultimately though, it was her Edna Krabappel that she will be best remembered for. In a career spanning over 24 years, Marcia Wallace made Edna into a essential member of The Simpsons' entourage,...

If you heard the wind whisper the name Edna this weekend, you already know voice actress Marcia Wallace passed away on October 25 at her home in Los Angeles. According to her son, she died due to complications of pneumonia. She would have been 71 on November 1. In addition to voicing Bart's teacher and Ned's beloved, Wallace also starred as receptionist Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart Show, Mrs. Caruthers on Full House and sassy maid Maggie Hawley on That's My Bush! She will be deeply envied and missed.

It was a foregone conclusion that should Arrested Development return in any capacity, all the major players from The Bluth Family (Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi, Tony Hale, Jessica Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, David Cross) would all be back. But given the wonderfully warped world Mitch Hurwtiz created over three tremendous seasons, everyone wondered which supporting players would be returning as well.

Happy Friday! It’s the last minute run-up to summer blockbuster season, and since no one wants to even contemplate challenging “The Avengers” next week, a swell of smaller, independent, and foreign pictures are hitting theaters this weekend. And with the Tribeca and San Francisco International Film Festivals in full swing, we’re happy to go along. Despite the blockbuster-less slate, there’s still plenty of mystery, horror, and gun-filled action to (temporarily) sate any action lovers’ palate. Plus a romantic comedy and a maybe-for-children-maybe-for-adults animated feature. Enjoy!

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Alfonso (Jeremy Ray Valdez) picks up a girl in a bar, or at least attempts to before seeing his brother Roman's (Yorlin Madera) car explode in a police chase. Tony (Michael Weatherly) finds a new fad, May 25th is national Tap Dance day and he wants to be prepared. Ladies are into parties. Ziva (Cote de Pablo) says McGee (Sean Murray) is wearing a tux as he's attending a wedding over the Internet. Tony: "I would be laughing if this wasn't so sad." Hey that's never stopped Tony from making fun before. He thinks McGee is taking technology too far, well he wasn't the one who started this whole technology revolution. There are some who would argue social networking sites etc take technology too far. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) gives McGee a minute to change and then tells him he's had his minute. At least he let McGee 'attend' the wedding.

To Full Frontal Or To Not Full Frontal
When I saw the first headline trumpeting news about Justin Long's inadvertent full frontal nude scene in his upcoming movie Going the Distance, I knew how the story would end before I even started it: namely, that particular scene would not end up in the movie. Americans as a whole are still supposedly way too squeamish to actually be confronted with a guy's junk onscreen, especially in a romantic comedy like Going the Distance.
Justin Long
Which doesn't make sense given that Nanette Burstein, Gtd's director, was supposedly so taken with Christina Applegate's shocked reaction to Justin's junk that she filmed the scene that way ten more times before eventually deciding not to use it. Or someone decided she shouldn't use it. Btw, imagine if this were a gay director who did that. Tongues would be wagging even though...

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
