"Gex" was first released for the Panasonic 3DO in 1994, with ports later being made for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Windows PCs. The 3DO version is the only one with the ability to save progress, which is done by finding hidden VHS tapes in certain stages. In the later ports, this save functionality was replaced by a password system, with the tapes now giving the player passwords that bring the player back where they left off. Additionally, the 3DO version runs at 30 frames-per-second, as opposed to the ports which are 60fps.
