Watchable Early Poverty Row Talkie
boblipton20 November 2023
The jewel heist in Newport was successful, and most of the mob lams it to Connecticut to hide in a small town. Figuring no one would look for a crook in a court gallery, Lloyd Hughes takes himself there, to witness the case of Maria Nixon. She was given to a family to scrub. Now they want to give her back or make her marry the son of the house. On a whim, Hughes says they can't do that, since he and Miss Nixon are engaged. The judge marries them, Hughes gives her enough money to get to New York City and live for a while, and heads out west to live an honest life, redeeming himself for her. A couple of years later, Miss Nixon is working for District Attorney Theodore von Eltz. When some politicos want to run him for governor, they point out a married man is a better candidate, so he asks Miss Nixon. At this point, Hughes blows back into town.

There are some nice plot points, and as usual von Eltz gives a strong performance, although everything is hampered by a poor sound track. Some of the plot seems to have been added to make the story come out neatly, but in the end it does. The end result is certainly watchable.
