Luke Muldenhower, a fine student and the captain of a high-school football team, is in true love with Julie Ellis, daughter of wealthy parents who hoped even better for her but must admit he's swell. Alas, an apparently pointless oncologist's examination proves that Luke has a rare cancer. After months of torturous chemotherapy, with loyal support from Julie and their parents he can return to his student life, and is welcomed like a hero. Just when everything seems back on track, even an athletic scholarship, he has a relapse and is diagnosed with another cancer, requiring radiation.
