A Dramatic Epic about World War I Fighter Pilots.

This BBC Television series definately started well, showing strong characters and interesting relationships, as well as creating historical interests. However, the series ended extremely abruptly, and didn't really have a 'conclusion', and began to waver in credibility towards the end. However, I would still recommend it to any fan of history/ aeroplanes! Worth a watch!

An excellent series that really needed a third.

I'm also from Brisbane!

There were 25 episodes in all of this show (12 in Series 1 and 13 in Series 2). I'm still trying to chase down a copy of the first episode but have the other 24. The first series cover the learning stage of the air war (1915)with experiments in mounting machine guns, the beginning of tactical development etc. In the second series the development was progressing and it was all getting more dangerous - not because of the unreliable or ill-designed machines they were flying but because machine guns were being mounted and used effectively. Through this series the class issue was examined more and in fact they always covered a lot of side issues well. I don't think the second series was that bad at all. It is obvious that a third series was planned or at least thought about but it finished in a reasonable way. The quality was such that I was just wishing for more!

For me it captures not only the flying but also the time period so ER well. That's its real charm.

A good war torn series

I loved this series, aeroplanes are my thing. Does anyone know if its available on DVD / Video. I would pay a good asking price for it

I saw the original being made at Old Warden here in England and loved the play acting. Likewise, I thought it ended bit suddenly and I would liked to have seen the conclusion.

I have got the books and they are pretty much like the TV show. I don't believe its ever been repeated here in UK, unless of course its been on SKY, never seen it though. The aeroplanes were all models built an dflown near my home town, realistic looking they were too. The factual part of the show was good, as were the uniforms.

cheers

Stands up for viewing today!

I've just finished watching the first season this week (yes, I have copies of the episodes!) and it really stands up well against the other more well-known 70's BBC drama series. I'm missing a few episodes of season 2 which I'd like to get hold of but I'm hoping that someday this will get released on DVD. Especially with the movie Flyboys coming out later this year.

I'm aware that most of the flying scenes were done with radio controlled models but it really doesn't show that much. The switch between models and actors in static full size replicas is done very well and the acting of all the main cast is of the quality you'd expect for this ear of the BBC.
