Using technology as a tool to terrorise originally surfaced in horror during the 70s and 80s when TVs and videos became common household appliances. Self-aware security systems (Demon Seed), fervent televisions (Videodrome, Poltergeist, Terrorvision), cursed VHS (The Video Dead, Ring), record players raising dead rockers (Trick or Treat), evil telephones (One Missed Call), virtual-reality (The Lawnmower

Sarah looks back at the Amityville films, and finds a lot of scary things, not all of which were intentional…
112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.
It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

Every now and again I’ll scour the shelves of my local supermarket looking for an interesting straight to DVD release that might catch my eye. Usually I don;t have much luck, however this past week there was not one but two Dtv flicks that caught my eye, including this, 13 Eerie.
The film follows six ambitious forensic undergrads who travel to a remote island – the location of an abandoned prison (13 Eerie Strait Penitentiary) previously used as a biological test site – vying for a position in the FBI. The zombie convicts that now inhabit the island begin to hunt the students down and what started as a fight for an esteemed FBI career is now a fight for their very lives…
So what attracted me to 13 Eerie?...

When we last chatted with acclaimed photographer, filmmaker and musician Jason Bognacki (check out the interview here), he was in the process of expanding his haunting short film Another to feature length. The supernatural horror short was one of several stylish, sexy and often intensely disturbing films Bognacki is releasing through his production company Full Frame Features, along with his acclaimed mini-feature The Red Door. Another stars Paulie Rojas (The Last Resort) as a young woman who must fight for possession of her soul after learning of her demonic heritage. She co-stars with Maria Olsen (Paranormal Activity 3), Nancy Wolfe (Helter Skelter) and Michael St. Michaels (The Video Dead). A release date has not yet been announced, but the new trailer is amazing, so I'm hoping we won't have to wait much longer. ...

This is the first article in our Ultimate Horror Experience series, where the Moviefone staff looks back on scary movies that impacted us the most. Stay tuned for a different movie each week in October.
The early 2000s were the beginning of a horror subgenre, one that used the emblems of the millennium to explore ghosts and demons. I've come to dub this period as tech-horror. Tired of trite stories about haunted houses, demonic possession, and ancient fatal curses, filmmakers began using technology to spook us; at the time, there was nothing scarier.
One of these films was "The Ring," which came out when I was 11 years old. This was a time when digital technology was slowly infiltrating our daily lives and online communication was on the verge of expanding. At that age, I was still using MySpace and AOL instant messenger, and had just gotten my first cell phone (in retrospect,...

Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, the Israeli titans of the Cannon Film Group, had a huge business theatrically and on home video throughout the 1980’s producing lower budget films. Mainly known for their genre output, Scream Factory presents two of their offerings in a new double feature set.
Shizoid (1980) stars Klaus Kinski as a psychiatrist who runs a therapy group that is quickly losing its members to a serial murderer, while X-Ray finds Barbi Benton trapped in a hospital and stalked by a killer after a routine examination.
Schizoid (1980) plays like a TV movie of the week with a little gore in it. Julie (Marianna Hill) is a columnist for a newspaper who is receiving threatening letters while members of her support group drop like flies. Could it be her therapist, the aforementioned Kinski? A co-worker? Is it the therapist’s daughter (Donna Wilkes)? The murder mystery in Schizoid is void of suspense or interest,...

The 80s were full of many things, leg warmers, giant hair, neon colors paired with some of the most unique music any decade had ever seen. What this decade also brought us was countless films that share the term “classic” with things from the infamous Brat Pack to Stephen Spielberg – the films that came out of this decade were unquestionably unique and littered with style. Of course not every film that came out in the decade is considered a classic, that would just be silly, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another decade that features as many childhood favorites and cult classics as this one. It also brought us the mighty VHS boom and made our beloved horror genre thrive throughout.
This list was painstakingly compiled to represent the essential horror films from the 80s that aren’t necessarily the best; but that represent the decade best as a whole.

After many years, horror fans will no longer have to buy a region 2 version of the cult classic 70’s film “The Town That Dreaded Sundown”. Starring Ben Johnson and Andrew Prine, the film is loosely inspired by the real life killings of a mysterious figure in Texas who was never caught.
I’ve personally always wanted to see the film, but could not find it at a reasonable price, but thanks to Scream Factory we can all now enjoy the film. S
pecs or Special Features have not been detailed as of this writing; however a release date of early 2013 is expected and will be available on both DVD and Blu-Ray.

The announcements continue to roll in from Scream Factory and we have news of two more cult classics making their way to DVD and possibly Blu-ray. Their weekly title update revealed that 1976′s The Town That Dreaded Sundown and 1979′s The Evictors will be released in 2013.
Unfortunately, we don’t know if all Scream Factory titles will be getting a Blu-ray release, but so far, everything they are releasing this year is being sold on both formats. These movies have not previously been released on DVD in the Us and we’ll have more specifics in the coming months.

They’ve already announced an impressive slate of collector’s edition Blu-ray/DVD releases and many more are on the way. Their most recent announcement revealed that they will be releasing The Video Dead.
This 1987 direct-to-video zombie movie has gained a cult following over the years, but has not received a proper DVD release in the Us. At this time it isn’t known whether this will be a DVD release only or Blu-ray as well, but all Scream Factor titles have been available on both formats so far. Expect more information over the next few months, which a release in early 2013.
Here’s a brief synopsis and a trailer for those that haven’t seen it:“When teenagers Jeff and Zoe find an old T.V. set in their new house,...

To say that we're big fans of The Scream Factory is a bit of an understatement as these cats are pumping out high quality Blu-rays and DVDs of some of the most hard to find horror flicks around. That trend continues with their latest announcement... The Video Dead!
The label broke the news on its Facebook page...
"The much-demanded The Video Dead (1987) -- with zombies that come out of a TV set -- is finally coming out in 2013."
While they didn't get into specifics, it's nice to know the flick is officially on its way. Written and directed by Robert Scott, The Video Dead stars Michael St. Michaels, Rocky Duvall, Diane Hadley, Roxanna Augesen, and Jennifer Miro.

Scream Factory has just announced via their Facebook page that the seminal 80's VHS flick (also cheesefest), The Video Dead will be coming to DVD. No word yet on date, bonus features or Blu-ray release, but I think it's safe to assume that this one might be coming to just DVD.
Check out this description from IMDb user Jean-Marc Rocher:
An unlabelled crate from an unknown source is delivered to a house in the woods. The homeowner unwisely accepts the delivery, only to discover it contains a TV set that starts spewing giggling zombies all over the place. When a new family moves into the now-abandoned house, the son discovers the haunted televsion and is soon told what he needs to do to send the zombies back where they belong. Knowing and doing, however, are two very different things, and the zombies are not likely to go quietly.
And if you missed it,...

The Video Dead Movie Review (1987)
Directed By: Robert Scott
Written By: Robert Scott
Starring: Rocky Duvall (Jeff Blair), Roxanna Augesen (Zoe Blair), Sam David McClelland (Joshua Daniels), Michael St. Michaels (Henry Jordan), Thaddeus Golas (Deliveryman 1), Douglas Bell (Delivery Man 2), Jennifer Miro (The Woman), Libby Russler (Maria), Victoria Bastel (April Ellison), Garrett Dressler (Mr. Ellison), Melissa Martin (B Movie House wife), Cliff Watts (Garbageman)
I went in to this movie wanting to be highly entertained by a good zombie film but came out happy it is partially forgotten as “The Video Dead” is the video dud! This movie was intended to be a 1980’s style comedy zombie movie but the video tape is broken from start to finish. This direct to video movie was released in 1987 by Embassy Home Entertainment and is pretty rare as it has never been released on DVD.

It takes a lot to shock the average horror junkie, because our favorite films are by definition shocking. Because of the nature of these films, often the most jaw-dropping moments aren't necessarily the goriest ones, but rather the surreal non sequitur scenes that virtually come out of nowhere and just as quickly return there. Sometimes we realize upon repeat viewings that such moments do actually move the plot along. However, sometimes they just can't be explained away.
Bad chop suey, Pieces
In the middle of the film, an undercover cop played by Lynda Day George is walking across the dark college campus following a figure (Bruce Le) who she thinks might be the killer. Suddenly, he turns on her and begins attacking her with kung fu moves.
A student who is helping the cops, Kendall (Ian Sera), appears just as suddenly and stops the attacker,...

I’m currently sat watching Take Me Home Tonight, the Topher Grace starrer set in the 80s and I got to thinking about how much fun I had back then, and then I got to thinking about all the cool movies that were released during my the decade and just how many of them have never seen the light of day since then… So here it is, my Top 10 movies of the 80s that have never made it to DVD (well at least not here in the UK):
1) The Legend of Billie Jean (1985)
Average Texas teen, Billie Jean Davy, is caught up in an odd fight for justice. She is usually followed and harrased around by local boys, who, one day, decide to trash her brother’s scooter for fun. The boys’ father refuses to pay them back the price of the scooter. The fight for “fair is fair...

The Slumber Party Massacre C'mon! Admit it! There was always that horror film, it wasn't necessarily the best horror film ever made, that you had to keep watching over and over again as a kid or as a teenager. There was just something about that film that drew you to it. Something that made you want to watch it over and over again. I know for some that could be The Video Dead since that used to have frequent airings on USA. Or for others that title could be Carrie since the story resonates with so many people. Or it could be something more obscure and less well known. Whatever that title is, it's funny how that title is a part of you and you will always have those memories of watching it a ton of times. For me, the film that I watched over and over again as a kid,...

***After starting in Washington D.C. nine years ago Horror Movie Night has expanded to include chapters in Austin, Dallas and Chicago. Gatw’s own Brian Kelley is the originator and programmer of this illustrious weekly Wednesday night tradition which features a “classic” horror film. Each week I will be reviewing/commenting on the past week’s selection so do your best to find the film, most of which have not made it past VHS, and follow along. Better yet, start your own chapter!***

I remember when I was very young and I'd go to the video store with my parents. I was probably 6 or 7 years old the first time I can remember. About 90% of the time I'd gravitate toward the usual family fare, for my generation it was Don Bluth animation, Back to the Future, and usually some classic Disney stuff. As I grew older and became braver in my exploration of the video store, I started to notice something a bit nasty. All of those great hand-drawn covers for the horror and exploitation movies that I never saw on marquees in the small towns where I grew up. Stuff like The Hatchet Murders, The 7 Doors of Hell, The Video Dead, Psychos In Love, The Gates of Hell, Phenomena, A Bay of Blood, Demons, and numerous others practically leapt off the shelf and into my hands, I would read the salacious synopses and imagine horrible things.

Pretty much the best thing that can be said about The Video Dead is that at no point was I compelled to turn it off. Other than that there really is no redeeming quality here. It is a case of auteur theory gone awry as the director was the only writer and other producer and someone should've checked him on a few things. It pretty much starts right away with a reclusive and supposedly renowned author getting a TV delivered to his house. However, he did not order it. Why then is it accepted? Then zombies are seen roaming about on it even though he turns it off and it turns back on again,...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

You remember the VHS cover: a zombie, clawing its way out of a TV set. And that title? Totally 80’s, totally in blue neon with drippy, gruesome, haunted house lettering: The Video Dead, my friends. Heck it used to be on USA every Saturday growing up, hawked by Rhonda Shear or Commander USA. Well, as you know, it’s not on DVD ... yet.
Cut to: Mr. Chris MacGibbon — ghoul about town, trying to do the right thing, giving us another shot of 80’s zombies, finally. I had the pleasure of throwing a few questions Chris’ way and if we all play our cards right, we’ll be slipping The Video Dead right next to our copies of Humaniods From the Deep. Why? Because we can, and we’ll have Chris to thank for it.
Heather Buckley: When was the first time you watched The Video Dead?

When I received an E-mail about MGM HD’S “Dying for the Weekend” marathon, I thought it would include the typical list of the movies normally shown on Halloween. So I was really surprised that the zombie flick, The Video Dead was part of their lineup. Video Dead is exciting because it hasn't been released on DVD, so unless you own the VHS you can't watch it. Horror movie marathons on TV normally consist of movies horror fans already own in their collections. MGM's Halloween Marathon kicks off Saturday, October 31 at 6:00am with Deranged and ends on November 1st with Twins of Evil. For more info, clips or an exact schedule visit Dying For the Weekend.
