Enjoyably wicked
Although Mighty Mouse was perhaps Terrytoons' most prolific character and his series the longest running one of the various theatrical series, he and it are not among my favourites. For me, although his series is generally watchable he is one of those pleasant enough characters but also quite limited and one-dimensional. And his 80 cartoons spanning from 1942 to 1961, were a very mixed bag, none awful as such but none great as well. Do prefer Gandy and Sourpuss (not so keen on Gandy on his own though) and Heckle and Jeckle personally.
1946's output was still in early stages at this point, but already it was a mixed bag for Terrytoons. The previous three 1946 Terrytoons cartoons ranging from lacklustre ('Svengali's Cat') to very good ('The Talking Magpies'). The inoffensive but nothing special Gandy/Sourpuss cartoon 'Fortune Hunters' is in between. Of the four, this included, 'The Wicked Wolf' is the second best after 'The Talking Magpies'. Found it pretty good, if not mind-blowing, and infinitely better than the previous Mighty Mouse cartoon 'Svengali's Cat'.
The story is admittedly not much more than operetta-like melodrama, and not a particularly new one either. Also thought it started off a touch too on the "cute" side, with three happy singing bears, designed like half-bear half-cat, and furniture (am kidding you not) that doesn't really connect with the rest of the cartoon.
Was not sure what my stance was on Goldilocks. 'The Wicked Wolf' is one of the hottest interpretations of the character visually and love her chemistry with the wolf, but when introduced on her own she is like a sickly sweet child who suddenly matures significantly when with the wolf.
Mighty Mouse, even if one-dimensional, is a likeable and resourceful hero but the best character easily here is the wolf, very amusing but also a formidable threat which provides some nice tension. The cartoon picks up significantly when he appears and has his first encounter with Goldilocks. He has an entertainingly creepy dynamic with Goldilocks, very like an operatic villain stopping at nothing to have the heroine for himself. The biker wolves are a strange but enjoyable addition.
'The Wicked Wolf' is full of lively energy and the dynamic between the characters is a continual delight. The gags, and the cartoon is not short-changed in this respect, are timed well and are funny. The final third is suitably chaotic without being rushed or chaotic, it doesn't feel too much like a different cartoon and Mighty Mouse doesn't feel entirely pointless though actually 'The Wicked Wolf' would have worked equally well without him. The animation is colourful and neat and it is great that the backgrounds increasingly became more ambitious and more detailed. Other than the wolf, the star though is the music. Like an essential character of its own and so infectious and cleverly constructed, some smile-inducing lyric writing too. It is well sung, especially the resonant bass voice for the wolf.
In summary, well done. 7/10
