Two Little Kitties
boblipton24 July 2013
This is a pretty good Farmer Alfalfa movie in which a cat in a battered top hat -- probably meant to suggest Ted Lewis -- courts the Farmer's cat, by singing her a ballad specially written for the cartoon -- called "Agnes".

The cartoon quickly becomes a story of their elopement and it's mostly well done, with a few oddities -- Alfalfa's farm is right by the tenements and also the woods; and there's one incredibly bad patch of animation when the two cats are walking down the aisle. On the other hand, it's well backgrounded, the gags are good and even the typical Terry cheapness works well as a gag -- the cats flee from the shotgun-wielding farmer by running their mass entrance into the scene backwards.

AGiven that the pluses outweigh the minuses, this is a pretty good Farmer Alfalfa.

A Tale of Two Kitties with Farmer Al Falfa
TheLittleSongbird24 May 2018
The Terrytoons are oddly interesting, mainly for anybody wanting to see (generally) older cartoons made by lesser known and lower-budget studios. They are a mixed bag in quality, with some better than others, often with outstanding music and with some mild amusement and charm and variable in animation, characterisation and content.

1935, like all the other years for Terrytoons, saw a hit and miss batch, more so than the other years even. Of which 'A June Bride' is one of the better ones ranking it in correlation with the rest of the Terrytoons and one of the high middling 1935 cartoons. It is an unexceptional, but above average cartoon and has the same amount of problems and strengths that other Terrytoons have. 'A June Bride' is worth watching as an above average watch with more to it than completest sake.

Best asset is the music, which predictably is incredible. It is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is great fun to listen to and full of lively energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. The ambitious, elaborate detail in the backgrounds is still great to see and some synchronisation is neat.

Some amusing moments and there is a lot of zest and natural charm. Also a suitably strange and absurdist quality at times that was fun and endearing to watch. The characters are lively and great fun to watch, particularly Farmer Al Falfa.

Outside of the backgrounds, the animation tends to be primitive at best with a fair bit of crudeness, over-simplicity and choppiness while also with a little more fluidity than usual. The animation in the aisle scene agreed is really bad.

Likewise, the story is paper thin and formulaic, once again executing an already fairly tired premise with nothing new. There are not always enough gags and they vary in effectiveness, a couple of stale ones here and with a sense that there was room for even more absurdity.

All in all, decent. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Terrytoons was an animation studio that turned out a number of cartoons in the '30s. It never achieved the renown of the Looney Tunes, and this particular cartoon gives a sense why. "A June Bride" has a hackneyed plot - guy wants a gal but she's kept from him - and dull animation. In this case, a male cat longs for a female cat, but farmer Al Falfa (a recurring character in the Terrytoons productions) won't let her be with him. The situation soon escalates.

One could make the argument that cartoons were still in their relative infancy at the time, so one can forgive the simplistic plot and flat animation. Maybe so, but the truth is that Terrytoons never turned out anything comparable to the Bugs Bunny stuff. I guess that the Warner Bros. Animation department just happened to have the right combo of directors, animators and voice artists.

Anyway, this one's worth seeing if you want a wide variety of old cartoons.

All things considered, not a bad little short

Warning: Spoilers
This is a one-shot cartoon produced by the Terrytoons studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

Paul Terry looked at cartoons as the cinematic equivalent of yard-goods, to be churned out as quickly and as cheaply as possible. Profit was his motivation and the studio was rarely innovative or inclined towards quality. Still, they managed to turn out some moderately entertaining work. This is one reasonably interesting piece.

It has the Terry hallmarks-reused footage, repetition of gags, simple character design. It's the tale of two cats, lovers wishing to be married. There's a song, "Agnes", sung by the male cat to his girl, complete with cat chorus as accompaniment. Farmer Al Falfa catches them and prevents the female cat from leaving and then goes down and begins shooting at the cats.

This turns into a war between Falfa and the cats, where Falfa is woefully outclassed and outnumbered. The groom to be rescues his bride and the last minute or so is their wedding and departure, Falfa trying one last time to unsuccessfully stop them.

This is worth watching once.
