In November 2016, at the 50th annual Country Music Association Awards, Beyoncé performed “Daddy Lessons,” her first explicit foray into country music. On the emotionally intimate, vervy album Lemonade, the song felt inspired by the singer’s Southern origins. Onstage, accompanied by The Chicks and a band wielding the full power of acoustic guitars, horns and harmonicas, it became a full-throated declaration — an affirmation of all that came with Beyoncé’s roots in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.
The backlash to her performance was swift and predictably racist. In a recording of that moment, the camera quickly cuts away from parts of the audience largely unmoved by Beyoncé’s enthusiastic invitation to clap along. On social media, detractors expressed their anger at the musician’s inclusion. A month later, the Recording Academy rejected “Daddy Lessons” as a country entry for the Grammys, setting the stage for a contentious battle about who and...

CinemaWhile Deepika's debut was in Kannada in 2006, she did not do any south film after that for years.Sowmya RajendranIn 2006, Deepika Padukone made her debut in a Kannada film called Aishwarya in which she acted with Upendra. Her very next film, however, was the Bollywood biggie Om Shanti Om with Shah Rukh Khan. Though Aishwarya was also a big hit, Deepika, who grew up in Bengaluru, did not do any south film after that for a long time. She was supposed to do Rana with Rajinikanth in Tamil, but the project didn't take off due to Rajinikanth's poor health. She eventually settled for what Rana became – a motion capture film called Kochadaiiyaan in 2014. The film tanked badly at the box-office, and Deepika did not sign any south film after that. Until now. The announcement that Deepika, currently among the highest paid women actors in the country, will be starring opposite...

I had the pleasure of attending the Ar Rahman “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” concert on 8th July, at the Sse Arena, Wembley celebrating 25 years of the maestro’s music. When you hear the name Ar Rahman, you immediately think of a plethora of songs which he has expertly composed and sung, and during the evening, it was a real treat to hear these very songs performed live. Armed with a great line up of singers, Ar Rahman was accompanied by Neeti Mohan (‘Jiya Re’ – Jab Tak Hai Jaan), Jonita Gandhi (‘Sau Tarah K’ – Dishoom), Benny Dayal (‘Badtameez Dil’ – Ye Jawani Hai Deewani), Javed Ali (‘Kun Faya Kun’ – Rockstar), Haricharan and a few more upcoming talents.
The show was hosted by Anushka Arora, and opened with a show reel showcasing all the highlights of Ar Rahman’s career so far, including his most recent performance with Chris Martin (Coldplay). He then arrived on stage,...

Since she first stepped on screen in Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has created some incredible roles both in the South and Hindi film industries. That first film showed that Aishwarya is an actress that likes a challenge, because she played dual role in the critical and box office success. Since her debut, with each new film, the actress has always chosen her roles very carefully and showed tremendous versatility in the characters she portrayed on film. Think of her incredible performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, or in the brilliant Taal, as well as Jeans, Raincoat, Chokher Bali, not to mention her total transformation into the characters in Devdas, Jodhaa Akbar and Guzaarish and that is just to name a few.
The actress took a family sabbatical from acting and fans eagerly awaited her return. The question on everyone’s mind was when she was ready...

While Tamil stars and films are perhaps not as well known outside of India as their Bollywood counterparts, they nevertheless have a huge fanbase within India (especially the south) and across the diaspora. Also known as Kollywood, the Tamil industry produces hundreds of feature films per year. The latest high-profile title is big-budget adventure/romance thriller I, from Robot helmer Shanmugham Shankar (commonly known as just Shankar). It opened Wednesday to sell-outs at home and abroad in what is the biggest-ever release for a Tamil-language film (see trailer below). In the U.S., it’s going out via distributor Aascar Film in over 200 theaters with versions in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu. No South Indian film has ever opened this wide in the U.S. market before. In India, the opening is on a record 6,500 screens. As with the major Bollywood films we’ve seen over the past year which have...

Karan Johar is getting back into the director’s chair and needless to say the cast he has brought together is very, very exciting. The romantic film will star Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Yes, you read that cast list right!
Talking about the film, he told Toi, “Love is the theme and conflict of my next directorial endeavor. It is too early to talk about the film, but for now, all I want to say is that it is not a conventional love story or love triangle. It’s a film that dwells deeply on relationships, heartbreaks and how love completes you, defines you and yet leaves you wanting for more.”
Apparently the director was planning another film, when this story hit, “When I went to New York, this film suddenly came to me. I think it is about getting out of Mumbai. I wrote it in just 30 days.

Is Upen Patel back in the world of films? Looks like that is indeed the case, what with the hunky actor, who had been in the U.K. for quite some time now, making frequent visits to India in the last few weeks. As per sources, Upen has bagged a biggie which happens to be none less than a film with director Shankar. "For quite some time Shankar has been looking for an actor with a powerful built to take on the lead actor Vikram for his film titled I. As an arch nemesis, Upen fitted the bill. The film is a musical romantic thriller and as per the plot, both are supposed to clash due to common love interest. There would be heavy dose of action involved and Upen seems like just the right personality to take on Vikram, who is quite a heavy weight himself. Pun intended", informs a source.

The former Miss World is due to appear at the Cannes festival as a debate about her weight rages in her home country
Aishwarya Rai is no stranger to Cannes. The Bollywood actor and former Miss World has attended the film festival 10 times, but her appearance on the red carpet next week is set to be her most talked about. The cause of a controversy raging in India lies not with her latest film – Rai is there to promote a cosmetic brand rather than a new movie – but instead, bewilderingly, with recent photographs which suggest that, six months after giving birth to a baby girl, Rai has yet to regain her pre-pregnancy figure.
Many in India are asking whether the woman routinely referred to as the most beautiful in the world, and who occupies a place in Indian popular culture akin to Kate Middleton or Victoria Beckham, has an obligation...

Endhiran's music, set to tune by Oscar-winner A R Rahman, had been released in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in July. No surprises there - South Asia loves Rajinikanth, and if Endhiran (the Hindi version is titled Robot) has to succeed, a lot rests on the southern superstar and his director Shankar. In fact, Malaysia was the only overseas market where one of Shankar's earlier movies, Jeans, had a 100-day run.Social networking sites, Facebook and Twitter, are already abuzz with Endhiran gossip.
