In general, the standard of the Terrytoons cartoons was between mediocre at worst and decent at best. Never irredeemable, though there were some very weak cartoons both in their earlier and later output, but never properly outstanding. The music was always the best asset, while the animation improved vastly over time. The story however was very nearly always the sore spot even in the best Terrytoons cartoons, and the characterisation and the gags were hit and miss.
1944's 'A Day in June' is a very pleasant, decently crafted cartoon, if one that one shouldn't expect too much from. As far as the 1944 batch goes, 'A Day in June' is one of the better ones and compares favourably with Terrytoons' overall output at this point of it. It's cute, it's charming, very gentle and not hard to like and just about avoids the maudlin, over-saccharine trap, when it is one of those cartoons that could easily do so.
'A Day in June's' weakest asset is the very slight and over-familiar story which can lack energy.
Some sharper timing to a few of the gags wouldn't have gone amiss. Same with the characters generally having more distinction perhaps.
However, the music is fantastic and as ever with Terrytoons the best thing about 'A Day in June'. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action. Close behind was the animation, as said more than once this component has come on considerably since the Terrytoons Studio first started. Overall, it is nicely detailed, lively and colourful, with a vividly rendered and not too cutesy setting and vibrant colours that don't look garish.
Though very gentle on the whole, the gags are there and they raise a satisfied smile. 'A Day in June' is well timed and cute with a narration that doesn't come over as too corny or make the mistake of over-explaining. The charm is immense and makes the cartoon very difficult to dislike. The pace doesn't ever feel dull, even if more energy was needed. The characters are not very original but they engage at least.
Summing up, decent cartoon and pleasant to watch. 7/10
