Dingbat was a short lived character that only lasted for five cartoons before becoming practically obscure. A real shame as Dingbat did deserve a lot better than that, and was actually in my view not a bad character at all (the opposite) even if his cartoons were a mixed bag. Am guessing that the reason why the character and the series didn't last longer because of them having a style of humour that was very popular and high in competition at the time, so they fell underneath the radar.
1950's 'All This and Rabbit Stew' is not a particularly good representation of him. Dingbat himself is fine, the cartoon itself is mediocre. Some good things here but what worked well in his previous two cartoons 'Dingbat Land' and especially 'The Hard Boiled Egg' disappears pretty much here in 'All This and Rabbit Stew'. Those that saw this without seeing those two beforehand will understandably think there's no wonder the series didn't last long.
'All This and Rabbit Stew' has good things. That the animation fares very well here was not a surprise as this aspect had come on enormously by this point with Terrytoons. It is nicely detailed, lively and colourful without being garish, the animation on the bulls stands out. Again, the music, the thing that was the most consistently good thing from the very beginning with Terrytoons, is a big strength. It is beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and arranged, is terrific fun to listen to and the lively energy is present throughout, doing so well with adding to the action.
Like in his previous cartoons, Dingbat despite the grating laugh is a lively character with great comic timing.
That cannot be said for the vultures, very bland as adversaries and every bit as bland as characters. Being neither menacing enough or anywhere close to being funny. The conflict between them and Dingbat as a result is severely lacking in tension and energy, with the conflict being so been there done that already it really felt very routine and formulaic.
Furthermore, the story has too much of a running out of ideas vibe, the scenario is a familiar one and the conflict is one that has been seen many times and much better. The gags are far too few and the not enough that are there feel recycled, so the excessive predictability makes 'All This and Rabbit Stew' feel very tired. The energy is nowhere near enough and the ending can be seen from miles off and wasn't in particularly good taste.
Concluding, very mediocre. 4/10.
