Thought of pure imagination
No other Terrytoons theatrical series started off on so strong a note and remained consistently good for a good chunk of its run in the way the Heckle and Jeckle series did. Their later cartoons weren't as strong, though generally still better than most of the studio's output during the late-50s onwards, but their earlier work for me is actually some of the best work Terrytoons ever did and the years that featured the Heckle and Jeckle series heavily managed to see as a result quite a sizeable improvement in the studio's quality.
1948's 'The Power of Thought' epitomises perfectly what is so good about the Heckle and Jeckle series. While not quite my definition of an animation classic, it continues the consistently good standard that the series had already shown with the previous cartoons and manages to be even better than almost all of them. 'The Power of Thought' is one of the series' best and in the top 3 most imaginative with a concept that was at that point unique for the Heckle and Jeckle series, actually also think it is one of their cleverest and funniest in its own way.
Even if the dark anarchy and slapstick were a lot stronger in other Heckle and Jeckle cartoons, with those being a general trademark for the series 'The Power of Thought' was occasionally a little tame.
With that being said, this wasn't a distractingly bad problem. 'The Power of Thought' does stand out in the Heckle and Jeckle series as it tried to do something different and succeeded at that with flying colours. Absolutely loved what was done with Heckle and Jeckle's powers which made for some truly imaginative moments and cool visuals. The cartoon even acknowledges cleverly that it's a cartoon right from the start in one of the series' most inspired openings and through the character of the here quite rootable bulldog. The ending is very satisfying and cleverly and energetically staged, even if it wasn't a complete shock.
'The Power of Thought' is very funny, and at its best hilarious, throughout, the irritating the bulldog gags avoiding being repetitive. Which is great as it was at the point where too many Terrytoons cartoons fall apart and run out of ideas and reuse past ones, whereas the ideas here do keep coming at a fast rate and they don't feel recycled. Instead of the pace slackening, the story actually became even more energetic later and the dialogue is witty.
Furthermore, the music, a consistent good thing, is so lovely to listen to and there is such an uplifting vibe hearing it because of the snappy character it has. The animation is every bit as great. It is vibrantly coloured, quite smooth in drawing and transitions, doesn't look static or simplistic and the attention to detail is good. The use of the bathtub used absolutely great in the animation and the cartoon is a masterpiece of character animation (i.e. The synchronised swimming).
Overall, very good and nearly great. 8/10.
