Dogs as Little Kids
When the title character loses his job guarding the butcher shop because the rats are eating all the meat, he tries to join in a game of football with other dogs -- and finds that popularity is not easy to come by.
Director Paul Terry would leave shortly to form his own studio and spend the next quarter of a century producing cartoons for young children. In this one, the equivalence is exact and the way the characters are handled is very much that of a bunch of kids when an unprepossessing stranger asks to join their game.
Technically this very late silent cartoon is of varying quality. As far as I can judge from the poorly preserved and presented print, there is much looping to extend the cartoon to full length and the artwork is much better at the end than in the beginning. Still, as a harbinger of what Terry would do, it is a worthwhile addition to your viewing.
