Air Bud — the Disney film about a dog who could play basketball (and which starred Buddy, a golden retriever that could indeed launch the ball into the net with his nose) — first dribbled its way into our hearts 25 years ago.
The idea for Air Bud had been hatched by Canadian brothers Robert and William Vince, who churned out low-budget horror films. When they caught Buddy on Late Show With David Letterman, inspiration struck for a family film. They described the idea to director Charles Martin Smith (who’d go on to direct 2011’s Dolphin Tale and 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home).
“I said, ‘That just sounds horrible,’ ” Smith recalls of their pitch. “This is what I said to them: ‘If you’d let me rewrite it and make it honest — a classic story of a boy and his dog — I’ll be in.

Tim Conway, the Emmy-winning comedian and actor who memorably starred in “McHale’s Navy” in the 1960s and “The Carol Burnett Show” in the ’70s, has died. He was 85.
Conway died around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning at a Los Angeles-area hospital after dealing with complications from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, according to family representative Howard Bragman.
The comedian, who also voiced Barnacle Boy on the animated hit “SpongeBob SquarePants,” won two of his six Emmys for guest appearances on the ’90s sitcom “Coach” and a second season episode of “30 Rock” in 2008.

Growing up in a small suburban town, the horror fan base was enormous but the festivities geared toward such a crowd were few and far between. The first ever horror film festival in my hometown launched when I was eighteen years old and, although I’ve attended many larger-scale festivals since, this one remains unforgettable. Not only did I get to meet a couple horror icons (there were only two in attendance) and view the works of young horror filmmakers, this festival was history in the making and I was there.
Unfortunately for the townspeople in Midnight Matinee (1989), their first horror film festival also made history… and they only wish that they could forget. But as far as the film itself, it won’t take me long to forget.

Remember Air Bud? After Air Bud, where he learned basketball, and Air Bud: Golden Receiver, where he played soccer, and before Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, baseball, and Air Bud: Spike Back, volleyball, and what would have been the best sequel had they ever got around to it—when Josh goes to college and joins a frat and Buddy tags along, This Summer, Air Bud Is Back In Air Bud: Beer Pong Pooch—between all that, was Air Bud: World Pup. And Air Bud played soccer. Completely ridiculous, right? Dogs can't play soccer, right? you're Wrong. This dog is the real Air Bud. Her name is Purin the Super Beagle (Purin means "Pudding" in English) and this is a video of her playing soccer. Here are her...

It’s Super Bowl weekend, which means two things: You better get some Tums ’cause there’s chili coming, and you better have a good football movie or two to hold you over until the Sunday evening gridiron action.
Why do doubt everyone else on the Interwebs (not to mention their mothers) has a very serious list of The Greatest Football Films Ever Made in All of History, we figured we’d best serve you with our personal favorites, as embarrassing as some of them may be.
Go Team!
Kevin Polowy, Executive Editor: ‘Rudy’ (1993)
When I was in high school, the real Rudy Ruettiger came and delivered a motivational speech to the student body. Afterwards, I had him autograph a Styrofoam plate in the cafeteria. None of this has any bearing on why I love “Rudy,” just Fyi.
The real reason I love “Rudy” is not that it’s the ultimate underdog tale,...

Hunger (Criterion) Harrowing true story of imprisoned Ira member Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) and his 1981 hunger strike protesting the British government’s refusal to recognize him, and other Ira members as political prisoners. Director Steve McQueen delivers the story with true filmmaking panache, mixing startling imagery that blends both stunning beauty and stomach-churning horror. Fassbender is absolutely brilliant in the lead. Not for the faint-of-heart, but not to be missed or, particularly, ignored. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with McQueen and Fassbender; Short documentary; 1981 episode of BBC series “Panorama” that covers the Ira hunger strike; Trailer. Widescreen. DTS-hd audio on Blu-ray.
Adam (20th Century Fox) Quirky romantic comedy about an eccentric, borderline Asperger’s Syndrome, astronomy buff (Hugh Dancy) who is drawn out of his self-imposed shell by a beautiful and sympathetic neighbor (Rose Byrne). Charming film with engaging performances by the two leads,...

Another day, another Disney reissue. Yet this time around, it’s not just a simple DVD reissue with Disney FastPlay being the only new addition. The good people at Buena Vista have now included a whistle with Air Bud emblazoned across it for the release of Air Bud: Golden Receiver. But as they say on QVC, “that’s not all.” Those yapping, cuddly puppies, Air Buddies, return for a corny sports commentator skit where they provide play-by-play and color for the final game in the film.
Air Bud: Golden Receiver is the 1998 sequel to the 1997 hit Air Bud, which followed a basketball-playing pooch. This time around, the dog plays football but that’s really the only difference between the original (well, besides a new dog. Sadly the original K9 passed away before production on the follow-up began). The story centers on young Josh Framm (Kevin Zegers) who becomes angry when his mother,...

The Final Chapter (read Part 2 here)! We have Howard the Duck, Freejack and Shyamalan flicks on the list; these are never good signs. Nonetheless we are bringing it all to you in full-color and in 3-D. (Ed. Note: Due to the economy, 3-D has been dropped and will be replaced by Smell-o-vision — check for your scratch and sniff cards in about 4-6 weeks.) Best Sound went to rage-zombie veterans Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, leaving Mark Weingarten who worked on Rejuvenatrix in the dust. The Sound Editing section contains one too many references to Ron Silver, and at least two references to a Roger Corman film.
The visual effects category pulled on our heartstrings this year due to the loss of Stan Winston, who was noted en memoriam along with other heroes, Vampira, Leonard Rosenman and Charles H. Schneer...
