shoestring effort that's imaginative and campy--I was entertained
willywants1 April 2005
Warning: Spoilers
An abused teen-aged girl is brought to a spooky old house by her father and told to clean it up. A group of the girl's friends show up, but things go bad when they learn that the plumbing has slimy, nasty demons living in them!

Brett Piper isn't a filmmaker who'll be winning any Oscars anytime soon. His films are super low-budget, cheap horror films, some of which are downright awful (Arachnia and They Bight being his worst). Here, however, he manages to pull off a reasonable impressive production on a shoestring budget.

The acting isn't very good. In fact, some of it was just awful, especially the actor playing the obnoxious punk kid, Wade. The script is weak too—Piper doesn't know how to pace things and as a result there are some scenes that just go on and on and on. The real stars of the film are the special effects, which are plentiful and often imaginative. The stop-motion animation was great, the make-up effects were often very good and the creature effects were quite impressive, though there is one rather tacky-looking creature near the end that resembles a Kermit the Frog puppet. There's some nice gore here, too, the most cringe-inducing being when some poor boy gets his crotch destroyed by a squid-thing (ouch), and a cool scene where a guy is covered in green goop then dissolved to the bone.

Its all cheesy, though it has something many of its type don't—a sense of humor. I've seen many a B movie that have failed from a lack of humor, and thankfully Piper seems to be aware of this.

"Drainiac" may not be high art, but its fun, different and occasionally imaginative. You could do much worse with a $2 rental.

5/10.

Hand made
kosmasp31 October 2020
So this looks like it is all made by hand, with no CGI. If you are a fan of things being really there and low budget movies - you might have a bit more love for this than others do. I have to admit, the way this was shot I did think this was maybe from the 90s or even 80s. Turns out it is not that old ... but you get everything horror movies back then offered, with the effects and the occasional nudity.

A very weird ending to all of this and almost a surprise there weren't more of this. Everything gets sequels in horror, yes? Well ok not everything but most things do. Anyway, if you have a heart for low budget movies as I already hinted at, give it a go. Otherwise you'd be wasting your time

Entertaining and Campy
icocleric13 December 2023
Strobe warnings for this film, as it has lighting effects.

I enjoy a certain kind of bad horror, and for me this film ticks the right boxes for that. It was a lot of fun. It may be very low budget, and the especial effects look like they have been dragged up from a much earlier time, but in a nostalgic way.

However it's entertaining, and campy, and the acting is pretty decent too. The story overall was basic, but the mythos of the water demon was interesting. The house has a Lovecraften vibe to me, and I liked that. The exorcist was hilarious and really cracked me up.

He was the most stand out character though, and I feel a down side to this is there is little to no character development.

But some hilarious deaths are to be had.

No-budget horror comedy done right
Katatonia4 May 2003
Not everyone will like Drainiac, or even appreciate it for what it is. This was obviously a very low-budget production, but that helps it out a great deal in my opinion.

Brett Piper knows how to make a great movie on a shoe-string budget. This is welcome, because most low-budget horror movies I've seen in the last few years have been average or just plain dreadful. With the advent of Digital Video (a.k.a. cheap, cheap) it seems like any Joe can try to make a lame film and get it released in a video store.

I have seen only one other movie directed by Brett Piper, which was a little gem called "Psyclops". It's also a very original low-budget movie that is somewhat horror, but mostly in the sci-fi genre. I hope to see more of his films in the future, he can work wonders where there is little to work with.

Check out Drainiac if you can find it, you just might like it. But make sure you like low-budget horror movies with a comedy twist....otherwise you probably won't appreciate what Drainiac set out to do.

Not the worst I've seen but it tries hard to be.
John_Warwick22 July 2005
Well I've been suffering from insomnia for the last couple of months but after watching this film on DVD I have found a cure. Like I said its not the worst film I've ever seen but it is extremely dull and I found my mind drifting off before I nodded off. The story involves a bunch of kids a haunted house with some gooey green stuff and thats about all I can remember of it. Maybe the film would benefit a little from some decent editing as certain scenes where nothing interesting happened seemed to go for too long but then again it is such a short film without cutting it, it would probably come in at under an hour that way. So if you have to watch every cheap horror film it might be worth a look otherwise save your time and cash.

Pencils ready, students!!

I'm a bit tired of writing reviews for movies none of you will ever see. So let's have a little vocabulary test instead, shall we?

horror (noun) frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting. This film is the antithesis of that word.

comedy (noun) humorous incident or series of incidents. This film, however unintentionally, is this is a nutshell.

gratuitous (adjective) being without apparent reason, cause, or justification. The nude scene involving our heroine in the bath during a dream sequence, for instance.

cheap (adverb) costing very little; relatively low in price. Where to start? The rubbery masks, the dreadful stop-motion animation... Basically, EVERYTHING in the big special effects 'extravaganza' finale.

dub (verb) to alter (a taped soundtrack) by removing some parts and exaggerating others. The director should have done a much better job of this. Oh dear. Oh. Dear.

thespian (noun) an actor or actress. None to be found here, people. Move along.

extras (noun) a person hired by the day to play a minor part, as a member of a mob or crowd. These all die in a variety of gruesome ways. They're the lucky ones, getting out early...

slime (noun) thin, glutinous mud. Tons of it. Green, brown... All throughout the film. Pretty disgusting. Is it scary though? Clue: NO.

dialogue (noun) the lines spoken by characters in drama or fiction. Here, it'll make you laugh. It'll make you cry. But not in a good way.

unbelievable (adjective) too dubious or improbable to be believed. The fact that someone bankrolled such an awful movie about a ghost stuck in some pipes who burns people's skin off with sewage. I mean... REALLY?

friggin' (?) Now, this word isn't in the dictionary, but I'm lead to believe you use it as a substitute for f**k when your granny is staying. They say it a lot in this film. Start a drinking game... you'll be p*ssed before half an hour.

There, I bet you've learned something today, haven't you? Made a nice change from a boring review, didn't it? See you next week, class. And do your homework, will ya... 2/10

Much appreciated, though still a painful watch.
Vomitron_G8 August 2011
Even though this isn't a good movie (bad acting, boom mic visible, etc.), Brett Piper did gain some of my appreciation in recent years (this is the 3rd movie I've seen of him, after "Bite Me!" and "Arachnia"). The man always brings a certain flair to his Z-grade world of horror and amps up his material with imaginative & very enjoyable low-budget special effects (plus, most of his movies seem to be shot on real film, so no SOV stuff here). And it works wonders, as his efforts become more watchable than you'd expect. "Drainiac!" feels a bit like as if a drunk Frank Henenlotter would have had his own take on the material of "The Evil Dead". This time we have an abandoned house possessed by a water-demon. Some teens come to clean the place up, and the madness begins. You may also include some female nudity, so we have something most B-movie horror fans can enjoy.

"Your father? I wouldn't worry about him..."
Bezenby28 November 2012
Ultra-low budget Evil Dead stylings here from Brett Piper, the man who brought us the head-scratching "Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell". This one involves Julie, stuck with an angry father who makes her clean up derelict houses in order to sell them, but this time the house he's chosen seems to have a Water Elemental living in it, which plays with Julie and her friend's minds before turning deadly. Who can help them? Well, maybe the exorcist that turns out of the blue...maybe him.

This film looks to have been made for around £1000, but, despite a lot of waffle and dead air, Piper certainly throws in as much as possible at the screen. From the real FX (rather than CGI) to the charming stop motion animation, I was pretty entertained for the most part. You've got tentacles rising from pipes to emasculate a moron, someone being pumped with water so much they explode, demons and spiders crawling about the place, and people being melted by slime. It's all skid row but if half the low-budget films I watched had this energy, I'd be a much happier man.

The pacing is a little off, however, and sometimes the film stops dead for no reason whatsoever, but I for one am happy that I watched this. Brings back memories of the Evil Dead (only on even less of a budget).

Boobies, gore and...boobies. This film has it all.
shaunw22 February 2003
My 9 year old brother picked this movie up from Hollywood Video today, and we watched it together (No, I wouldn't recommend this movie for most 9 year olds, but my little brother is...different). If you rent this movie, you need to know what to expect. This was a low-budget film. It's not going to have the kind of special effects you see in theatres. If you can't dig a good independent film, don't bother renting this.

The storyline was cute...and so were the actresses, I mean WOW! The lead actress found a new reason to take her clothes off like every five minutes, and this guy had his genitals mutilated by a toilet (he had it coming though). Good stuff man.

Absolutely Dreadful!!!!!!!!
huggy_bear25 January 2003
This movie was absolutely dreadful, awful. The acting sucked, there was no acting. The words never matched the mouth, and the effects were laughable. I knew I was in trouble in the first five minutes of this nightmare. The two rednecks fighting was just a freaking joke. I could've rounded up several of my friends and we could've done a better job of acting than these clowns did. The best part of the whole movie was the bath scene, but don't rent this garbage just to see a naked woman taking a bath. I tried to get my money back on this sh*t, but Blockbuster wouldn't go for it. Well, **Warning-Stay Away From This Piece Of Sh*T!!!

Drainiac is fun, funky, flashbacky horror opus
johnoakdalton12 July 2002
Brett Piper's "Drainiac" harkens back to horror's modern heyday in the mid 80s, and takes that retro groove on a tongue-in-cheek roller coaster ride through a haunted house opus. Lots of fun, solid FX work from Piper as always, and good energy throughout. Suffers a bit in post-production looping, but it's a coin toss whether Georgia Hatzis' bath or Leslie Culton's skull-faced boogie is better. Very solid independent outing.

I don't know what I was expecting
bowmanblue14 February 2024
I've decided that any film whose title is effectively a pun really is not going to live up to much. 'Drainiac!' is one hell of a low-budget horror film which tries its best to add some humour into the bargain. It's fair to say that it succeeds and fails in everything it tries to do.

A house is possessed and the teenagers who are trying to clean it fall foul of the entity lurking in the building's pipes. It may have a low budget, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the script has to be bad. However, here's it's pretty amateur at best. Sometimes the dialogue really grates as some words are used again and again. Plus the characters are pretty one dimensional. You'll know whether someone is going to make it or not simply because they're completely unlikable from the moment they appear on screen.

Although, props to the film-makers when it came special effects. There's some computer work done here and there (which is a bit ropey), but the majority is actually in the form of the lost art of 'stop motion' and it's actually quite inventive and makes the most out of the limited budget.

I think I laughed about once at some lines which were supposed to be humorous, but quite often the laughs fell foul. Plus the kids seemed to be quite casual about the situation they found themselves in, laughing and joking almost right up until the end. There's some nudity thrown in there, too. It's pretty unnecessary in terms of the plot, but I'm guessing the scene will certainly appeal to some people.

Overall, the film's okay. I may be dwelling on the negatives, but I could have turned it off at any point and I didn't. That's more than I can say for a fair few horror films I've had the misfortune to stumble on via streaming services. Can't think of anything to particularly recommend this one for, but it's not as terrible as it could have been. I guess the title still amuses me.

now that's 10,000 dollars down the drain

Warning: Spoilers
Two bums freezing from the cold stumble upon a seemingly deserted house & one is quickly disposed of in the basement by an unseen force or rather a seen liquid. Flash forward a few years and we find Julie (Goergia Hatzis), who also has recurring nightmare, goes up with her overbearing father to clean up the aforementioned house (her dad buys houses to turn over) Her friends come up to help, but the killer liquid/mist/vapor is waiting for them I understand the makers of the film were working on a really minuscule budget, but this film was still awful. The plot just didn't click for me (a problem no amount of money could've fixed) and at even only 80 minutes running time my interest was wanning before it was even halfway though. The film is also heavily disjointed.

Eye Candy: Georgia Hatzis goes full frontal an shows her ass as well; Adrienne McCleave & Leslie Culton both provide T&A

My Grade: D

DVD Extras: Commentary by Writer/director Brett Piper, Creg Conley, & Michael Raso; trailer for this movie; and trailers for "Shock-O-Rama", "Dark Chamber", "Millenium Crises", "Bacterium", "Chainsaw Sally", "Creature from the hillbilly lagoon", "Sinful", "Skin Crawl", "Feeding the Masses", "Prison a go go", "Suburban Nightmare", "Bite me!", "Screaming Dead", "Demoness", "& "psycho Sisters"

Tight sweater girl
Dr. Gore23 February 2004
Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

I rented this one the other day so I could teach my cousin the joys of B-movies. He was ignorant of their wild ways. My brother and I sat him down and showed him what true cinema is all about. We saw this back to back with "Slumber Party Massacre III". If that doesn't change your outlook on movies, nothing will. Unfortunately, I don't think we made a B-movie believer out of him. Oh well. At least we tried.

"Drainiac!" is about a girl who has to clean a disgusting house. Her friends stop on by to help. They somehow release the "Drainiac!". He's a water demon that is rummaging through the house. He does his demonic squirting shenanigans and the teens flag down an aquatic exorcist to purge the pipes.

As a low, (and I mean low!), budget flick, "Drainiac!" was about what I expected. It certainly wasn't a great movie but I was mildly entertained by it. For a budget of about $500, I think the cast and crew did a reasonable job.

The one aspect of "Drainiac!" that broke my heart was the tight sweater girl. She was the main girl's friend. And she wore a tight sweater. She had much larger breasts than her friend and yet did not feel the need to rip off her sweater. Why couldn't the "Drainiac!" have made a play for her? He could have at least sprayed her once or twice for a Wet Sweater Contest. That would have hit the spot. Ahhhhh...

a vomit-fest of a blob ripoff
DuctTapeAvenger26 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
horrible movie with lame attempts at humor and stiff acting casting was ridiculous (main character is 17, but has a tattoo??) this movie should be burned.... and to think this title was in the top rented section.... if i could retroactively kill the person who invented the DVD... i would kill him/her just so my eyes wouldn't be scorned by this movie.

It starts off with a campy scene, and then just fails as the horrible CGI monster, or green blob dissolves a guy.

Then zoom in present day. A teenage girl with an abusive father, has friends help clean an abandoned house, class clown/ renegade pops out.....

uggh... this was a cardboard cutout "C" movie.... the best part of this movie?

the credits at the end

It's Alive!!
wandernn1-81-68327420 December 2022
I was about to complain all over the place about this movie not having any TnA in it, but around the 35 min mark finally we get to see some! Along with tentacles and raw meat all over the 'star'!!! Wow this movie was made in 2000? Really sweet of Amazon to recommend it now.

And oh after that bathtub scene my oh my is she a dirty girl!!!

Actually this little critter fest is sorta fun. Now why does Amazon say this was from 2021?? That's pretty silly. Shame on you Amazon!

It's not good, it's not that bad! I guess we'll give it a 5/10.

And IMDB has now made it so a review has to have 600 characters before it can be entered. I really don't expect that to last very long because people are sure to complain about it. But until that happens I guess we have to expect reviews to be long winded and sometimes about absolutely nothing to do with the show in question.

It is what it is.
okpilak1 January 2023
I have no problem panning a low budget movie that tries to think big, but falls flat. With this movie, they knew what they had. The special effects are done practically, and the script captures a dysfunctional group of high schoolers very well. Julie's father buys run down houses to clean up and sell, but of course is a failure doing that. Julie is forced to spend a Saturday cleaning a house, and her friends decide to help out. Her father left to do business in town (drinking beer). And showing up is Wade, a bully, a jerk and stupid and obnoxious. And none of her friends are capable of doing anything to support each other. The house is haunted with water spirits, and they are not nice at all. There is good character development, as one can believe they are as unsupportive and insensitive as they are. And the actors seem to not take their roles seriously which helps a movie like this. It is entertaining, in some ways inventive, and they got a lot for their money. Better than many low budget films filling the midnight movie shows.

Good-Bad Movie Bordering on Bad-Bad
infinitetyler31 December 2022
On a scale of Sharknado to Troll 2, this rates somewhere between a 5 and a 7. They definitely nailed the film style, the bad acting, over-the-top antagonists, absurd plot, horrible script, etc for an 80's B-horror movie. If they were following the formula, there would have been boobs at minute 5 instead of 35, so I honestly can't tell if they're trying to make a bad 80's movie, or badly making an 80's movie. I think the latter is funnier, as I prefer terrible films that think they're good, like Birdemic: Shock and Terror and things by Niel Breen. It deserves props for believing that 80's horror was cool at least 10 years before Stranger Things started cashing in.

Drainiac! Is pretty genuinely awful, so watching it drunk with your friends (who like to yell at the screen) could certainly be fun; but your friends might also just think that you like terrible movies and leave. I wouldn't blame them since it's pretty awful. You've been warned.

Embarrassing to admit, I kind of like the Drainiac! Theme Song from the end credits.

Enjoyable low-budget indie horror outing
Woodyanders22 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Several teenagers get together in rural New England to renovate an old rundown house. Alas, said abode turns out to have lethal demons residing in its icky water supply. Writer/director Brett Piper relates the entertaining story at a snappy pace, brings an utterly engaging pulpy'n'zesty Grade B sensibility to the endearingly cheesy material, and delivers a generous amount of tasty excessive splatter as well as a nifty array of gnarly monsters. The game no-name cast contribute decent enough acting: Georgia Hatzis as the appealing Julie, Alexandra Boylan as the sweet Lisa, Ethan Krashnoo as nice guy Jake, Samara Doucette as the spunky Tanya, Rob Gordon as obnoxious and disgusting jerk Wade, Steve Bornstein as Julie's mean dad, and Philip Barbour as helpful and eccentric supernatural expert Plummer. The funky old school special effects possess a certain rough'n'ready charm. As a yummy extra plus, the fetching Ms. Hatzis bares her sexy slim body when she decides to take a bath. The fairly polished cinematography makes neat occasional use of wipes. Thomas De Renzo's shivery score does the spirited ooga-booga trick. A pleasingly schlocky good time.

Hilarious b-movie fun!
siereveld213 May 2003
Wow! This had to be one of the most fun b-movies that I've seen in a while. Terrible acting between completely dysfunctional characters, super cheesy special effects, boom mike shots, and a final showdown with what looked like re-used footage from Krull. The soundtrack did not match with the actors mouths in MANY places making it even more hilarious when they delivered the horrible lines in the script. It had it all though, from the excessive use of slow motion, a man having his genitals ripped off by a rubber tentacle, to a toy car sinking in the mud where a real car had been. This is a must rent for a bad movie night or if you are like me and enjoy movies made with my weekend beer budget. Two thumbs up for this one.
