Big things have small beginnings. They also have lots of sequels and prequels. Ridley Scott shows no signs of slowing down after “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” though he says that the next installment in his enduring science-fiction franchise will focus less on the xenomorph and more on artificial intelligence.

“I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.s,” he tells Empire in a new podcast interview. “The world that the A.I. might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one.”

“Alien: Covenant” didn’t exactly become a cultural phenomenon when it opened earlier this year. Ridley Scott’s latest prequel/sequel in his enduring science-fiction/horror series was met with lukewarm reviews and disappointing box-office returns, which is a shame — it’s the first true “Alien” movie in two decades, and a worthy addition to the xenomorph mythos. In a new video, Jack’s Movie Reviews attempts to diagnose the problem: It doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Chinese censors have cut up to six minutes worth of material from Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant,” including a kiss between two men (or at least two of the same man). Though the movie has been out for a few weeks in the U.S., it was released in China on Friday, about six minutes shorter due to Beijing censors cutting material apparently deemed offensive.

While censorship is a common practice for R-rated movies playing in China, typically it’s violence in action movies that gets the chop. (“Logan” and “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” were heavily cut this year.) Although a few gory alien scenes are missing from “Alien: Covenant,” there was something else amiss:

For “Alien: Covenant,” Ridley Scott not only redesigned H.R Giger’s iconic Xenomorph creature from the first movie, but also unveiled the new Neomorph. They’re a fascinating study in contrast (and brilliantly animated by Mpc), especially in light of the director’s passion for sentient life forms.
The Xenomorph contains a subtle shift between fleshy skin and a harder exoskeleton, while the Neomorph offers more humanoid qualities with its elegant simplicity. Yet it packs a deadly bite with a double-jointed, protruding jaw, which strikes without warning.

“Alien: Covenant” dethroned “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” atop the box office this weekend and is currently sitting at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is to say that a great many seem to have enjoyed Ridley Scott’s latest. Not among them is “Hannibal” and “American Gods” creator Bryan Fuller, who responded bluntly when asked whether he liked the film: “No.”

“I think the last two movies have had too many similarities to bad ‘Friday the 13th’ sequels and not enough similarities to good ‘Alien’ movies,” Fuller elaborated during Vulture Festival yesterday. Perhaps it is only fitting that area meteorologists would forewarn ominously that the Mahoning Drive-in Theater’s “Christopher Lee Tribute” might take place on a cold and dark and stormy night. After all, it was the villainous film legacy of the actor – who passed away at age 93 on June 7th of this year – to have frightened generations of moviegoers in such a bleakly nightmarish rain-soaked setting. As it happened, while the shivery autumnal chill on Saturday night was undeniable, there was – happily - nary a sprinkle of precipitation to obscure one’s windshield view of the drive-in’s massive CinemaScope screen.
The Mahoning Drive-in, located amidst the Pocono Mountains surrounding Lehighton, Pennsylvania, is – quite frankly – an anomaly amongst the anomalies of surviving drive-in theaters. Whilst most remaining drive-ins have been forced to move cautiously and expensively to digital projection systems or else suffer their screens going dark,...

Video games, especially those with large fan bases can sometimes attract extra attention outside of the realm of the video game itself, much like any beloved piece of culture. Now that video game fan bases have expanded, so has the universe in which games reside, including fan fiction and theories around the events and parts of the games. Fans who become obsessive tend to create theories and stories to explain certain parts of the universe, to explain it or give it a bigger meaning then may have originally been intended. This expanding fan base, with i’s theories, as well as the internet’s ability to spread rumors have allowed certain fan conspiracy theories to run wild, and out of control.
Some of these theories are clearly created by some fan looking to just have a bit of fun and expand the meaning of the game. While, some of these theories are eerie,...

It was recently made known that Criterion was working on a new Blu-ray/DVD release of Gojira (1954), but there have been some very exciting developments regarding the Us version titled Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956). A rare unedited print of the Us version has been found and should be included with Gojira on the Criterion release.
From August Ragone, via Twitch: “Yesterday, I posted the fantastic news that the Criterion Collection had slyly announced, with a simple photo, that they will be prepping a DVD/Bd release of the original Japanese version of Godzilla aka Gojira (1954), and while, it seems, that Honda’s seminal film will be getting a much-needed restoration, some have been asking if the corresponding Us version helmed by Terry O. Morse, Godzilla, King Of The Monsters! (1956), starring Raymond Burr, will be included in this release. Previous home video releases of this film — and all versions screened on television,...

I'll admit it. Horror Express is one of my favorite movies on the planet. It's impossible not to love a film featuring horror legends Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing squaring off against an armed with a whip Telly Savalas and a whistling demonic yeti who has the ability to suck your brain smooth of its knowledge, thereby turning you into a mindless white and bloody-eyed zombie!
When word broke this morning that this 1973 genre classic was hitting Blu-ray courtesy of Mpi and Severin Films, we got immediately to work digging for artwork and extras. Alas ... we have hit paydirt!
Eugenio Martín's Horror Express will be hitting Blu-ray on September 27th with a high definition 1.66:1 transfer from the original negative.
Dig on the artwork and supplemental material after the plot crunch!
Synopsis
An English anthropologist has discovered a frozen monster in the frozen wastes of Manchuria which he believes may be the Missing Link.

It's a safe bet that J.J. Abrams is always working on something, whether it's a new movie, TV show, comic book, grilled cheese recipe, etc. Now word comes in of another top-secret project between Abrams and frequent collaborators Monica Breen and Alison Schapker on a new film involving "swashbuckling robots with swords" called "Zanbato." Sounds like the Thanksgiving hangover I never woke up from, but I digress.
Deadline has the news, though details are scarce beyond that bizarre but alluring premise. "Zanbato" marks the fourth collaboration between Abrams and the Breen/Schapker team, who previously wrote for "Alias," "Lost" and "Fringe." Deadline points out that female writing teams in sci-fi are rare, but you wouldn't believe it by checking their resume -- Breen and Schapker kicked out some of those shows' most compelling and shocking material.
We don't know what the new project will fully entail, but their past work...

Subject: Will Arnett, 40-year old Canadian actor & occasional comedian
Date of Assessment: July 9, 2010
Positive Buzzwords: "Arrested Development," timing, marriage
Negative Buzzwords: Disappointment, underwhelming, squandered talent
The Case: Since this guy is commonly referred to as the father of the comedy messiah around these parts, it should be fairly interesting to declare a contrary position. I am speaking, of course, of Will "I've Made a Huge Mistake" Arnett. Now, I loved him in "Arrested Development" just as much as the rest of you did. However, you must understand that I've reviewed some really shitty Will Arnett movies -- The Brothers Solomon, The Rocker, and G-Force -- in recent years. For further examples of supreme awfulness, one doesn't need to look any further than Jonah Hex, When In Rome, Hot Rod, and Let's Go to Prison. Other than those crapfests, Arnett's been sticking to some safe bets; that is, he's been lending...

Monsters vs Aliens Reliance Big Home/Dreamworks, Rs 599 Rating: **** In a galaxy very much like our own, Susan (thankfully not looking like Reese Weetherspoon, who lent the voice) gets hit by a meteor on her marriage day and turns into a giant. She’s captured by the Us army, given the name Ginormica, and sent to a top-secret prison that has other likeable monsters —Dr Cockroach the failed scientist, B.O.B. the blob, Missing Link the vain fish-ape hybrid, and Insectosaurus, a monster larger than Ginormica that thankfully doesn’t speak. When the evil Gallaxhar’s magnetically-shielded, giant robots come to Earth — to California, to ...

Dear Prudence,
Sorry I'm writing again so soon, but you won't believe this. Remember how I was joking about finding the Missing Link? Well, we met him today! For real! His name is Chaka. He looks like a monkey boy and he's helping us out. Although I'm growing rather fond of him, he's in desperate need of a bath.
Love,
Rick
P.S. Could you please send me deodorant and some stuff from Bath & Body Works so I can deodorize Chaka.
P.S. Based on Sid & Marty Krofft's classic TV series, Land Of The Lost hits movie theaters June 5.

Will Arnett and Oscar nominee Michael Shannon are boarding "Jonah Hex," Warner Bros. and Legendary's action Western based on the DC Comics character.
Jimmy Hayward is directing "Hex," whose cast also includes Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Megan Fox. It's the story of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malk¬ovich) who wants to raise an army of the undead to liberate the South.
Arnett will play a Union soldier who enlists Hex and is blindsided by the dirty fighting style of his enemies. The role is not inherently comic.
Shannon plays Doc Cross Williams, the bizarre ringleader of a brutal gladiator circus event. The character might appear in sequels.
Legendary is co-producing and co-financing the pic, which is due to start production this month in Louisiana.
Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Lazar are producing.

Four brand spanking new stylized posters for the upcoming 3D animated Monsters Vs. Aliens recently surfaced showcasing some of the film's titular monsters and aliens, each with their own cutesy tagline. The film, as the name so clearly implies, centers on an alien invasion for which the government, headed by president of the United States Stephen Colbert, sends monsters to stop - monsters which include the enormous Ginormica, the amphibious Missing Link, the amorphous blob B.O.B. and the brilliantly insectisoid Dr. Cockroach. They duke it out on March 27th.

Chicago – Jeffrey Katzenberg stopped off in Chicago on the morning of Monday, December 8th, to preview DreamWorks Animation’s “Monsters vs. Aliens” and show off the brand-spanking-new 3D technology that will be used for all upcoming animated films produced by the studio.
After an introduction by Katzenberg, critics, journalists, distributors, publicists, and others were treated to roughly half an hour of footage, spread over three distinctly different scenes.
Before the audience donned their 3D glasses (but after the coffee and Danish), Mr. Katzenberg spoke for about fifteen minutes about what he considers as important a technological advancement as sound and color to the history of film. Instead of taking projects that were conceived in 2D and converting them to 3D, Katzenberg has dictated that all of the filmmakers under the DreamWorks banner conceive and author their works with 3D in mind.
