BBC Studios Scripted MD Mark Linsey has said the production community “needs to think about how to make drama and comedy at a lower tariff” amidst a tricky economic situation.
Linsey, who relocated to LA last year, described the state of the global scripted market as “incredibly challenging,” citing the U.S. strikes, broader economic strife and the difficulties in attracting financing.
“We all know about challenges to costs of production and that is real and hasn’t gone away in drama,” said Linsey at Content London. “As a community we have to think about how we are going to create drama and comedy at a lower tariff as financing gets more challenging.”
Linsey said partnerships are even more key in the current market. He had a readymade example in the shape of the supercharged Doctor Who, which has brought Disney+ on board as co-producer for the upcoming series, paired with a hefty budget increase.

If you followed indie film in the 90s, Vince Vaughn was at the center of a legendary tale. As the story goes, in order to get permission to use the theme from Jaws in the film Swingers, Doug Liman screened the film for Steven Spielberg’s approval. Not only did Stevie Boy allow them to use the scary shark tune but the legendary director knew he had to work with whoever was playing Trent Walker. And, he did just that when he cast Vince Vaughn in his Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World. Spielberg instantly knew that Vince Vaughn was superstar material and he was correctomundo. Over the last nearly 30 years, he has given us some of the best comedic performances mixed in with some bone chilling anti-heroes. But it seems in the past few years Vaughn has slowed down his output to focus on smaller roles in more meaningful projects.

Anne Heche's tragic death following a car crash earlier this month left many with questions.
Now, we have some clarity.
The death of the Men in Trees star at 53 has officially been ruled an accident.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner released a report on Wednesday confirming as much.
Heche's cause of death is listed as inhalation and thermal injuries from a fiery car crash earlier this month.
What's more, the report states that it was an accident.
It says that Heche suffered a "sternal fracture due to blunt trauma" from the car crash.
Sternal fractures typically occur after the chest strikes the steering wheel in motor vehicle collisions.
Heche was behind the wheel of her Mini Cooper when she crashed into a home in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles.
The car and the home caught fire.
It was so severe that it took 59 firefighters over an hour to control.

US actress Anne Heche is dead but will remain on life support to allow for a possible organ donation, her representative has said. The 53-year-old had been in a coma for a week after crashing her car into a house in Los Angeles, reports the BBC.
“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul,” her family said in a statement on Friday.
Heche appeared in films including ‘Volcano’, ‘Donnie Brasco’ and the 1998 remake of ‘Psycho’.
The mother-of-two also appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2020.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (Lafd), Heche’s vehicle “erupted in heavy fire”, which took 59 firefighters more than an hour to fully extinguish. The two-storey home she crashed into was left “uninhabitable”.
As well as suffering burns, the actress was left with “a severe anoxic brain injury”, when the brain is deprived of oxygen, the BBC quoted her family as saying.

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 24
“I wonder if this itch would have stopped…”
Hey, remember when this was a show about plucky heroes?
Picking up on the powerful revelations and themes that the previous episode “Tenko Shimura: Origin” establishes, “Tomura Shigaraki: Origin” continues that chilling story in order to tell the grander narrative of the Symbol of Fear’s birth. One of the most original bands to ever hit the “America’s Got Talent” stage, Gangstagrass, was shockingly eliminated during the Quarterfinals 1 results show. The bluegrass/rap band strives to prove we all have “common ground” despite our differences, but America clearly didn’t feel a connection to their original song, “All For One” (watch below), during the August 10 performance show. Of the five acts to be cut from the live shows, 24% of fans thought Gangstagrass was most “robbed” of a spot in the “AGT” semifinals. Here are the complete poll results:
47% — Beyond Belief Dance Company
24% — Gangstagrass
21% — The Canine Stars
5% — Sethward
3% — Matt Johnson

“Ted Lasso” co-creator Bill Lawrence has landed a series order at Apple for the drama “Bad Monkey” with Vince Vaughn attached to star, Variety has learned.
The series is based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel of the same name. It tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vaughn), a one-time detective demoted to restaurant inspector in Southern Florida. A severed arm found by a tourist out fishing pulls Yancy into the world of greed and corruption that decimates the land and environment in both Florida and the Bahamas. And yes, there’s a monkey.
Lawrence is writing the series and will also serve as executive producer under his Doozer Productions banner. Vaughn will executive produce in addition to starring. Doozer’s Jeff Ingold will also executive produce along with Matt Tarses. Doozer’s Liza Katzer will serve as co-executive producer. Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence is under an overall deal, will produce for Apple.

My Hero Academia Season 5 Episode 12
“We need to know more about this power.”
My Hero Academia’s previous episode started to move its characters into a more relaxed place now that the Joint Training Arc battles have reached their conclusion. This laid back energy takes up the entirety of “The New Power and All For One” and this is mostly a disposable episode that’s full of entertaining interactions between characters. However, it’s a relatively inconsequential offering beyond a few veiled assumptions about One For All.
My Hero Academia can’t only cater towards non-stop battles and perpetual obstacles, so “The New Power and All For One” effectively releases some pressure and is satisfied to just allow Class A and B to mingle together. This isn’t a problem, but it’s a little surprising that this is the big showcase for the anime’s 100th episode.

The most glamorous movie about the Korean War experience lauds the bravery of Navy aviators while spelling out the downside of fighting an unpopular war. William Holden, Grace Kelly, Fredric March and Mickey Rooney turn in sharp performances, and Charles McGraw gets his best character part as a no-nonsense flight commander. Paramount’s special effects department outdid themselves on this one — the illusions are beautifully matched to the live-action filmmaking. Heaven help the good civilian soldier that finds himself asking how he ended up getting shot at in a ditch in some far-off foreign country.

My Hero Academia Season 4 Episode 24
“Who’s the strongest?”
Part of the fun of being a fan of comics, anime, or superheroes is the inevitable debates that friends break out into over who could win in a race between Superman or The Flash, or if Goku would beat Naruto in combat. This level of curiosity is natural and encouraged by the respective storytelling mediums and this new episode of My Hero Academia successfully taps into that inquisitive passion. There’s been a lot of doom and gloom in this season of My Hero Academia and while the second half of this year has been considerably more upbeat, “Japanese Hero Billboard Chart” creates a playful energy that’s a lot of fun and the right reward for the end of this season.

The best way to enjoy “Sense8” as a series is to not question it too much. It’s a show that has a lot of complicated elements, with Season 2 continuing to expand the mythology that creators J. Michael Straczynski and the Wachowskis built from scratch in Season 1, but if you find yourself asking too many questions about the rules that govern this world, you’ll find yourself lost in the weeds.
This isn’t to say that the show doesn’t have an intriguing plotline, which only gets denser and richer in Season 2. But you’ll be missing the best aspects of a show that leads with its heart, first and foremost. In telling this story about eight once-upon-a-time strangers who find themselves bonded together by a psychic link, the creators have chosen to celebrate the sense of connection that underlies this premise.
If you watched Season 1, you know what we’re talking about.

Approaching the Apocalypse as an essential self deprecating act of survival in ‘The Girl With All The Gifts’ and ‘Planet of the Apes.’
Curiosity killed the cat. But what about Schrodinger’s feline? In Colm McCarthy’s The Girl With All The Gifts, the kitty facing extinction is a young girl stumbling into an inherited wasteland where she must answer the classical thought experiment forced upon her by scientists desperate to cling on to the last dregs of humanity. Like that cat in the box, the film also attempts to exist in two states of being. It is certainly a traditional zombie film ripe with brain chomping ghouls, but The Girl With All The Girts also reaches for the moral high ground of The Twilight Zone with a climax that proudly extends a middle finger to its audience. It joins the ranks of the original Planet of the Apes as a cinematic experience birthed from a pessimistic...

As a teenager, many of my first and strongest movie impressions came not from the movies, but from certain critics. I memorized Robin Wood’s analysis before getting a look at Hitchcock’s Psycho. Raymond Durgnat introduced me to Georges Franju and Luis Buñuel, and I first learned to appreciate a number of great movies including The Barefoot Contessa from Richard Corliss, a terrific critic who championed writers over director-auteurs.
The Barefoot Contessa is a classically structured story, in that it could work as a novel; it’s told from several points of view.

Once a blockbuster staple, the power ballad was the ultimate movie accompaniment. We look back at some of the classics...
For a glorious period from the mid-80s throughout the 90s, the biggest summer blockbusters were only worth their salt if they had an equally gargantuan song at the head their soundtrack. Often the success of one was inexorably linked to the other, with the likes of Four Weddings And A Funeral's feats matched and even exceeded by Wet Wet Wet's accompanying Love Is All Around.
The greatest and most successful songs belong to the power ballad genre, and are as emotionally charged and forceful as the gods of epic balladry such as Journey, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Meat Loaf.
