Late last week, two surfer bros — one apparently named Chad Kroeger (yup, same as the lead singer of Nickelback) and the other apparently named Bodhi — addressed the San Clemente, California city council and requested a 12-foot-tall statue of Fast & Furious star Paul Walker be erected on the city's pier. I'll pause for a second to let you soak in all of the glorious aspects of that sentence.
It's technically unclear whether this is a prank (I'm pretty sure it's a prank), but these Fast fans have actually made this same plea to a city council in Burbank, California as well, so it seems they won't stop until somehow, somewhere, a 12-foot statue of Paul Walker looks out over a city and unites us all in "gnarly times."
There's video at the bottom of the page, but if you don't feel like watching, LAist has transcribed it for us:

On Christmas Day, George Michael passed away at the young age of 53. And while he, like many music icons we lost this year, was undeniably taken from us too soon, we can take comfort in the enduring legacy that he has left behind.
A legacy that of course includes a music video that totally shaped the ’90s and galvanized our modern definition of “supermodels“: (much to Kendall and Gigi’s chagrin), “Freedom ’90.” This song came to not only be a Lgbtq anthem, but also featured some of the biggest faces in modeling of all time, each of whom took...

The HBO film has been called ‘a powder-keg documentary’ about the controversial church. So why can’t it be screened in the UK?
The most mesmerising moment in Going Clear, Alex Gibney’s wrecking-ball job on Scientology, watched so far by 5.5 million Americans, is a clip of leading church executives singing along to a clunking 1980s rock anthem, We Stand Tall. Disciples wave candles and sway in bad knitwear but, by this point in the HBO documentary, we know that the church allegedly blackmails adherents over their sex lives; that it is thuggish to those who question its conduct; that founder L Ron Hubbard was a conman who switched from writing bad science fiction to bad space religion; that his successor “Pope” David Miscavige is portrayed as a psychopath who has repeatedly hit and tortured his staff.

Following a couple of teaser trailers and a number of posters for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, the latest batch of character art for the movie puts the spotlight squarely on the warriors who will be fighting as part of the revolution against the Capitol in the franchise’s penultimate chapter.
This group definitely have a very different aesthetic to those we’ve seen from District 13, and while Liam Hemsworth doesn’t look too different as the returning Gale, we do get our first look at those who will join him.
That list includes Cressida (Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer), Messalla (Evan Ross), Boggs (Mahershala Ali), Castor (Wes Chatham) and Pollux (Elden Henson). They all look pretty good, and go some way in giving us an idea of the darker tone that the final two movies from Francis Lawrence will have.

After staring at my movie collection trying to come up with an article idea (secrets revealed), I noticed a lot of coming of age stories. Growing up in a 90 minutes or so movie is no easy feat and these movies often deal with confusing, heartbreaking and even exhilarating time in our lives. They make sense of all the motions of a kid, show guidance in one form or another; they depict turning points in our lives that are all too common and relatable.

Chicago – Right on the heels of the Trayvon Martin verdict is a new film about a similar divisive and race-controversial event, “Fruitvale Station.” Actor Michael B. Jordan portrays Oscar Grant, a 22 year old African American who was shot in the back during an arrest procedure in Oakland, California.
“Fruitvale Station” refers to the public transportation stop in Oakland where Grant was detained on New Year’s Day, 2009. During his arrest, which he was alleged to be resisting, he was shot in the back by the arresting officer and died the next day. This sparked a citywide protest and a trial that was similar in nature to the Trayvon Martin case.

Get it? Stand tall? Cause Abraham Lincoln was a tall fella? Heh heh. I kill me. Kinda like when John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln at the theater. (Too soon?) Anyways, this isn’t really about that fateful trip to the theater to catch a play. Spielberg’s “Lincoln” is more about what happens before that event, during the days of the Civil War, from the looks of it. Check out three clips from “Lincoln”, which features three main stars with three names. That’s got to be some kind of record, right? Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral...

When it comes to secretly being a big geek, few celebrities are less secret about it than Stephen Colbert, who frequently makes mention of his nerdy tendencies on his hit TV series "The Colbert Report." Not only has Colbert spent a great deal of time playing Dungeons and Dragons, for instance, he's also gone so far as to learn how to read the version of Elvish created by J.R.R. The release by Paramount Pictures of the first poster for Pain & Gain, Michael Bay's action-black comedy movie about a pair of real-life meathead bodybuilders — played by Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson — who get involved in an extortion ring and kidnapping plot got us to thinking about how out of style juiced-up bodybuilders are (except for the "gorillas" on MTV's Jersey Shore) these days. There was a time when overly tan and freakishly huge was the ideal form to emulate, but now the look and practice of bodybuilding has become more niche. We decided to put down the super food smoothie and pick up a glass of raw eggs and take a look back at the best bodybuilding movies.

Due in theaters this weekend in Canada and in limited release in the U.S. (and currently available on VOD), by now you hopefully know that Sarah Polley’s sophomore release “Take This Waltz” is one of our favorite films of the year so far. Starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Canadian actor Luke Kirby, and comedienne Sarah Silverman (in a great dramatic performance) the film is an unflinchingly raw look at love, infidelity and the often selfish choices we make in our lives (read our review here).
And apart from being emotional, moving, melancholy and at times, difficult to watch, the film's textured funny, happy/sad moods are well buttressed by an excellent soundtrack, and again, one of our favorites of the year so far. The movie takes its title from a classic Leonard Cohen song and the film features that cut (of course), plus Canadian chanteuse Feist's take on...

If you have ever played the Sony video game Shadow of the Colossus, then you already know one thing: It's all about the monsters. Giant-sized mountainous behemoths the likes of which few could imagine. One of the few... Chronicle director Josh Trank.
Deadline reports that Trank has signed with Sony Pictures to develop and direct Shadow of the Colossus, a big scale live action adaptation of the bestselling Sony videogame. The film is being produced by Kevin Misher. The studio is interviewing writers to work with Trank, who after directing the $13 million sleeper hit Chronicle has become the go-to guy for big popcorn pictures. Trank takes on the Fumito Ueda-created game that has a strong narrative arc along with the obligatory creature quotient to get the visual effects crowd excited.

Feeling judged by others is an experience with which most of us are familiar. Your body type, politics, and sexuality are only some of the reasons that people might pass judgment. Even well-intentioned family and friends may look down upon us if we are not living our lives in accordance with their beliefs. I have faced skepticism and judgment many times in my life. I am an openly gay man who earns his living as a professional psychic and life coach. I am pretty sure Mitt Romney would have given me an aggressive haircut in a headlock if we'd gone to high school together.
Whether I am explaining how I see auras, giving psychic readings to clients, or introducing my husband David to others, I realize that my life may seem a little unusual. Because I am intuitive, I acutely feel people's judgment, but I do my best to rise above it.

Everyone needs a hero. Especially when aliens from another planet set out to destroy the human race. Gotta hate when that happens. Take heart, though. Mankind? We are tough as nails. There's little doubt that a human will be the Last Man Standing.
We'll see if that rings true as according to Variety Paramount has tapped Orphan scribe David Leslie Johnson to adapt sci-fi actioner Last Man Standing, Daniel LuVisi's graphic novel that sold out at San Diego Comic-Con in two hours this summer.
Recently published by Kevin Eastman's Heavy Metal label, the story, set 600 years in the future, follows an invincible soldier created to help Earth win a war against Mars. After becoming a celebrity hero, he's framed for a heinous crime by a terrorist organization. After a nine-year prison sentence, he escapes and sets out to even the score.
Look for more on this one soon.

Back in the Fifties and Sixties movies about extreme giants and shrinking or shrunken people were all the rage thanks to some nifty camera tricks. So the question now beckons: Can that same premise still find its footing with today's generation? Who cares?!? We love the retro-poster that looks as if it were ripped from the pages of an old Fifties textbook!

Hey, Dancing with the Stars had a Halloween episode! It was still way less scary than when they beat up several of the movies I liked as a kid. Onward!
The Great
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough are back in form. They danced a Red Riding Hood–themed paso doble and Lake powered past an injury for some impressive dipping and whipping around.
Score: 27, and totally deserved.
And you know who the other pair in this category is, right?
Wrong! Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy did a great samba to "Werewolves of London" that was really fun to watch. Well done all around.
And, yes, it looks like Hope brought some cupcakes to the costumers.
Score: 24 That was an offensive lowball — and a transparent one, given the stinkfaces the judges were weraring as Hope and Maks were on deck. Stand tall, Hope and Maksim. You have a 27 in the Book of the Ages.

Scientology, the tiny sect of believers in the philosophies and methods espoused in science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard's "Dianetics," is a group concentrated in Hollywood, with stars such as Tom Cruise as its figureheads. That association leads to a lot of publicity and fundraising, and, every once in a while, some serious production value in its propaganda hymn videos.
Which, like much of Hollywood's work from 20 years ago, is hilarious kitschy when viewed with fresh eyes.
The Church of Scientology put together this singalong video, titled, "We Stand Tall," which stars a whole plethora of its followers -- including Scientology leader, David Miscavige. Here's a sampling of the lyrics:
Words from a book showed me the way to be free from the shadows of yesterday. But the price of that freedom we almost paid -- From now on, joining together we held our ground and lifted our voices one mighty sound,...

"I just left Hawaii with Kanye," Tip revealed when we met up with him in Hollywood on the red carpet for the world premiere of "Takers." "We did six records."
Over the weekend in Beverly Hills, where the Atlanta Mc continued to promote his film — due in theaters August 27 — Tip elaborated a little bit more on his sessions with one of the great producers and MCs in music. The King of the South said he's anxious for the world to hear his new records.
"Well, Kanye, man, he's a phenomenal talent," Tip said. "It goes without saying that it's combustible energy [when we're in the studio]. I'm excited to present it."

T.I. has revealed that he maintains a "healthy friendship" with Eminem since the 'Slim Shady' rapper contributed to a track on his 2007 album T.I. vs. T.I.P.. In an interview with MTV News, the 29-year-old said that Eminem contacted him personally after the collaboration and that the two formed an instant bond over their shared experience of having spent time in prison. "He'd just kinda remind me that 'I've been through dark period in my life too. You're gonna make it. You're one of the ones we need, so you're gonna make it. Stand tall and walk the walk'," he said. "He just made it a point to always reassure me of the spot that I hold in this thing that we (more)...

Rapper T.I. will always be grateful to Eminem for standing by him when he was sent to prison - calling the hip-hop star's support "incredibly helpful" and "noble". The stars first met back in 2007 when the "Stan" hitmaker recorded a verse for T.I.'s track "Touchdown", which featured on his fifth album "T.I. vs. T.I.P.".
T.I. reveals the pair stayed in touch following the collaboration, and Eminem doled out "reassuring advice" after he was jailed in 2009 on weapons possession charges, and continued to write to him while he was behind bars.
T.I., who was freed earlier this year, tells MTV.com, "We been (sic) speaking ever since (the collaboration), especially since I went through my situation (having to go to prison). (He would) just kinda remind me that 'I've been through dark periods in my life too. You're gonna make it. You're one of the ones we need,...

T.I. says he'll always have Lil Wayne's back. Just a few short months ago, Tip was in Wayne's shoes, having to put his career on hold and telling his loved ones goodbye while he served time in prison.
"Yeah, I speak to him. Sure," Tip said earlier this week in the MTV Newsroom when asked if he's in contact with Weezy. Tip said their relationship is a lot deeper than trading 16 bars on each other's songs.
"Well, his daughter and my daughter, they're real, real close," Tip explained. "My daughter spends the night with them, his daughter comes to spend the night with us. I told him, 'Whatever I can do. Whatever it is that's within my power' ... I know how it is with kids, especially with a period of time like that.

When T.I. first ventured out to get an Eminem verse on "Touchdown" for 2007's T.I. vs. T.I.P., the King of the South thought the best-case scenario would be that he'd get 16 bars of fire and a hit record. The Atl native gained much more than that while working with Marshall Mathers: a friendship.

A good idea can only become great if you've got the skills to sell it. We asked Sam Harrison, a speaker and writer on creativity-related topics, for a how-to in this excerpt from his latest book IdeaSelling: Successfully Pitch Your Creative Ideas to Bosses, Clients and Other Decision Makers.
1. "If they feel they birthed it, they can't kill it." David Schimmel touts this tenet at And Partners, his New York design firm. "If you truly collaborate with your clients and let them take credit for ideas," says Schimmel, "there's a good chance you'll sell your strongest ideas without having them watered down."
2. Leave creative chaos at the door. The route for discovering an idea is usually a winding, twisted path. But the way we present that idea should be a straight and narrow road. That's not saying pitches should be dull and didactic. Be bold. Rouse the room. Playing it safe is for wimps.
