There’s a line in Fever Pitch that every Arsenal fan can relate to. Michael Thomas has just netted the most dramatic goal in league history, and Arsenal are on course to win their first title in eighteen years; but still, Colin Firth’s character, Paul, believes his side are going to throw it all away.
Because often in football, if there’s one thing you can’t trust, it’s Arsenal. They’re having slightly too good a season for fans to be excited about; there’s been a bit of a blip, but they’ve come out of Christmas still in the title race. Surely it can’t all last? Arsene Wenger famously doesn’t like signing players, but can they really make it to May on the squad they’ve got, and expect to be crowned Premier League champions?
Maybe all that’s about...

Subject: Colin Firth, 50-year old English actor
Date of Assessment: March 30, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Underrated, mainstream
Negative Buzzwords: Stiff, posh, bore
The Case: The good news, as accurately declared by Colin Firth in his recent (Best Actor) Oscar acceptance speech, is that his career really has just peaked. The bad news, however, is that in the event of a career peak, a downward slide might be inevitable. In the best case scenario, it is entirely possible Firth could parlay his Oscar win into more exposure for the sorts of roles that he's played before and for which he hasn't yet received proper recognition.
Most of us know Firth as the quintessential Englishman and for good reason. He's quite notorious for his straight-out-of-the-novel portrayal of Mr. Darcy in the six-episode miniseries Pride and Prejudice, in which he performed the classic Regency version of a one-man wet t-shirt contest. Indeed, there's something strange...

The King's Speech (2010) delves deep into the relationship between two men - one a common man and the other a royal - by exploring the romance of true friendship and asks us to invest ourselves emotionally in such a relationship. The film traces the turbulent and painful accession to the throne of King George VI (Colin Firth) or "Bertie" as his speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) so fondly referred to him, and reveals the difficult decisions and moments he faced on that journey.
We are introduced to Bertie as he gives a nervous, stammer filled speech at Wembley stadium. on behalf of his father King George V, at the closing of the British Empire Exhibition on October the 31st, 1925. After trying to cure his stammer through a number of ridiculous methods, his wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) introduces him to Logue, a speech therapist known for producing great results.

Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be respectively presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Actor and Actress at the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Awards Gala will kick off the 2011 awards season on Saturday, January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
This award is very fitting for both actors. Firth is receiving major Oscar buzz for his performance as King George VI in "The King's Speech," and Portman for Darren Aronofsky's "The Black Swan."
I'm excited for these two actors, and I'm excited for the Film fest. I'm a Palm Springs resident so this is good news! Here's the complete press release:

Deadline discovered today that Optimum, the UK distribution arm of Studio Canal, is set to acquire Johannes Roberts' low-budget horror movie F (first announced here on Bloody Disgusting), and plans to release the shocker this autumn. From the director of Forest of the Damned, the pic follows a group of teachers who must defend themselves from a gang of murderous kids when their school comes under siege after hours. Inside you'll find an extremely bloody image, along with to more from the film starring David Schofield, Eliza Bennett and Ruth Gemmell. "The hoods themselves are played by Parkour specialists - the stuff they do is crazy, darting around up in the rafters in the dark amongst the empty classrooms and corridors - it's really freaky stuff. The other teachers are played by Emma Cleasby (Dog Soldiers) Ruth Gemmell (Fever Pitch), Juliet Aubrey (Constant Gardener, Primeval), Roxanne Mckee (Hollyoaks)."...

The actor's fame was assured in a clinging wet shirt in Pride and Prejudice and now he has an Oscar nomination for his starring role in A Single Man. His true passion, however, is far removed from the trappings of stardom
The idea of being a minority taste appealed to Colin Firth. It was a comfortable place to be. There would be fans around, of course, but not banks of adoring hoi polloi lining the pavement when he went out for a stroll.
"There are some actors who, wherever they go, people show up because they think they are fantastic," he once mused. "Then there are slightly marginalised people who are like somebody's secret. I feel like a Second Division football team that has this following who are more into it for the fellowship of each other."
An Oscar nomination for his lead role in Tom Ford's debut feature, A Single Man,...

Brit director Johannes Roberts made waves in the horror scene a few years back when he created the first Mobile phone series, When Evil Calls. Then in 2007, Roberts worked that series into an extended feature starring Sean Pertwee and Dominique Pinon, which was released by Lionsgate. What he has been working on recently has been a bit of mystery... until now.
His new film is simply titled F (as in the grade) and it looks to be the latest endeavor in Britain's recent wave of what I'm now coining as "hooligan horror" (see Eden Lake). We have received a small synopsis from Roberts, but I can't help but wonder if it will be a revenge movie where a humiliated teacher exacts some justice and hands out fails to all of his rowdy pupils. That would be sweet.
