Joan Armatrading has always been a pioneer — but the world is finally catching up to her. She made her name in the early 1970s — a Black woman with a rock guitar, at a time when the radio couldn’t imagine such a thing. Over the past 50 years, she’s built her hardcore cult following by always going her own way, a fiercely independent voice who never sounds like anyone else. And with a whole new generation of female singer-songwriters rising up, from pop to indie rock, it makes sense that...

Long before The Rock's Skyscraper, there was Anna Nicole Smith's 1996 action-thriller, which owes a considerable debt to Die Hard...
A high-tech building beset by villains and machine gun fire. A hero dangling from a wire dozens of storeys off the ground. Hostages. Explosions. More machine gun fire. Those are some of the sights that await us in Skyscraper, the latest action-thriller opus from Dwayne Johnson - arguably the closest thing the 21st century has to a star of Arnold Schwarzenegger's stature.

There are many who are looking at next week’s release of “Cars 3” and shrugging indifference, and even questioning why Pixar is bothering with a threequel. Well, the answer is money — the property is the most lucrative merchandising brand in their roster. And while you might not care about the franchise or the movie, it’s a safe bet that it’s going to be another global hit for the animation house.

Eleven years after the final installment in the original series, the Leprechaun franchise was brought back from the dead this week courtesy of Lionsgate and WWE Films, who together released Leprechaun: Origins (review) onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday.
The Warwick Davis incarnation of the titular character had a reign of terror that lasted from 1993 until 2003, the original franchise spanning seven installments that saw the Irish jokester taking a trip to Vegas, being shipped off to space and ridin’ dirty in tha hood on two separate occasions.
Needless to say, the Leprechaun has left a pretty large body count in his wake over the years, and in celebration of the reboot we wanted to shine the green spotlight on some of his most memorable slayings. So today we bring you the seven best kills from the original six Leprechaun films, which are the some of the wildest and most off...

After years of development, Southpaw is finally coming out to play. The boxing drama once courted Eminem before landing Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead, and now director Antoine Fuqua is going about filling out the cast. And would you believe he's enlisting People Magazine's Most Beautiful Person In The World, queen bee Regina George, and Ghost Dog? Deadline reports that Southpaw is in talks with representatives to add Oscar winners Lupita Nyong'o and Forest Whitaker as well as Rachel McAdams to the project. Gyllenhaal is playing a welterweight boxer who has fallen on hard times and succumbs to substance abuse as his career spills down the drain. In true Hollywood fashion, he finally finds the strength to return to the ring and compete. Spoiler? Eh. Whitaker, soon to be seen in Taken 3: Tooken To The Limit, looks to be playing Totus "Tick" Willis, a former champion who attempts...

Struggling to work out what decade the film you’re watching is from? If it fulfils the criteria on this list, then it’s probably from the 80s…

Chicago – “Limitless” is a fun, clever riff on the timeless tale of a man who wanted the world but didn’t know the price. From Faust to Icarus to “The Lawnmower Man,” we’ve long been fascinated with the idea that not only is it possible to have it all but that those who do will pay greatly for the privilege. With the best work of Bradley Cooper’s career, stylish direction, and clever storytelling, “Limitless” is a great rental, now available on Blu-ray, DVD, iTunes, and wherever else you like to download new releases.

Whilst doing a spot of channel surfing the other day, I found myself lured into the 80’s classic Teen Wolf, and I had forgotten just how much I love the so-cheesy-it’s good basketball montage at the end. It struck me that, even now, there’s something so satisfying about seeing a character that we’re really rooting for overcoming some kind of adversity, or solving a problem, set to the soundtrack of a dodgy power ballad/synth track.
So, without further ado, here are five of my favourite montages of the 80’s. Prepare to be roused!
1- Teen Wolf
To fill you in, if you’re not aware, Michael J. Fox’s character, Scott, has up until now been ‘Wolfing Out’ which ironically means that not only does he become cool and all the popular kids like him, it also makes him an ace basketball player in the process...

Marathon running has always seemed like an odd pursuit to me. It seems like a whole lot of training to put your body through something that it is not meant to suffer through. And you may or may not, you know, sh*t yourself. However, that being said, I do realize that people are very passionate about it and it can also be some sort of spiritual zen exercise and just pushing yourself To The Limit it something that people want to do in life. And after the New York City Marathon, you get a silver cape! So that’s cool. Despite the promise of a cape, I’ll push myself to the limit with drug experimentation and competative eating thankyouverymuch. However, I think we can all agree that this man running seven miles on a hamster wheel is stupid. Because, I would assume that marathon running, even if you...

There are plenty of different kinds of montages in the language of film, and they can fill you in on everything from the emotional state of your characters to a wacky makeover. So while a good montage sequence will explain everything you need to know in the most economical way possible, one of my favorite kinds is the "Rise to Power" montage -- which brings me to Scarface. I love Brian De Palma's crime opus for so many reasons, but I think when it comes to the art of the montage, I have a soft spot for cheese -- and it doesn't get much more pungent than Giorgio Moroder, the patron saint of 80's movie music.
By the time the power chords of Moroder and Paul Engemann's Push it To The Limit kicks in, we've already been watching Tony Montana work his way up the criminal ladder and...

According to most Yosemite Valley guides, it should take the average rock climber anywhere from three to five days to scale the 3,000-foot-high "Nose" of the El Capitan formation. Pepe Danquart's To The Limit watches as brothers Thomas and Alexander Huber attempt to complete the ascent in two and a half hours, setting a new world record. Much of climbing is about preparation, precision, and caution, but in order to make good time, the Hubers have to skimp a little on the elements that make rock climbing safe. They're in line with one of their American climbing colleagues, who says, "To make it rich, you have to put in an element of risk." To The Limit is full of a lot of talk about "risk" and "dreams" and "making the impossible possible," and Danquart's stabs at making this an inspirational tale can be a little exhausting. (The less said.

On offer this week is a veritable gallery of the eclectic and the eccentric as M. Night Shyamalan goes R-rated, Edward Norton goes green, Werner Herzog goes to the Antarctic, and two of Herzog's fellow countrymen go to California to climb a big rock very, very quickly.
"Beauty in Trouble"
Czech director Jan Hrebejk and writer Petr Jarchovský continue their longtime collaborative partnership with this dense ensemble drama loosely inspired by Robert Graves's poem of the same name. This time, the duo who balanced humor with drama in the Oscar-nominated Holocaust-set "Divided We Fall," turn to the devastating series of floods that swept Prague in 2002, and tell the story of Marcela (Anna Geislerová), an overworked mother of two living in squalor. When her ne'er do well husband is taken in by the police, she's courted by a well-to-do businessman (Josef Abrhám) and Marcela is forced to...
