Singer-songwriter Katie Pruitt looks like a saint on the cover of her debut album, Expectations. Framed by a cathedral window, she gazes skyward, surrounded by flowers. But instead of a halo, it’s a bright rainbow above her head.
“I always thought that churches are all very beautiful, and if I could create a stained glass window, what would it have in it? It’s got rainbows, and mountains, and flowers, and butterflies,” says Pruitt, seated at the counter of a Nashville coffee shop. “If I could have included more in it,...

Another decade is gone, but at least the '20s are starting off with award season. In honor of this great start to the year, it seems only fitting for one to take a look back at the Golden Globes a decade prior. After all, it was the year that Up in the Air, Nine, Avatar and Inglourious Basterds were nominated. In the world of television, the biggest shows continued to reign supreme, as they would for years to come. That night, Glee took home the most awards for TV, with four Golden Globes total. But shows like 30 Rock, Big Love, Damages, Dexter, Georgia O'Keefe, Grey Gardens, Into the Storm and Mad Men weren't far behind...

HBO has unveiled the first trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider,” the latest Stephen King horror novel to be adapted for the small screen.
The 10-episode series, which is set to hit HBO January 12, will follow police detective Ralph Anderson as he investigates the grisly murder of an 11-year-old. Although authorities quickly make an arrest, the police soon discover contradictory evidence, suggesting their prime suspect (Jason Bateman) was in two places at the same time. Though the case appears simple at first, the show’s trailer suggests that events soon take a more sinister — perhaps even supernatural — turn.
Although investigators looking into a child’s murder might seem like typical whodunit crime drama fare, the trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider” makes clear that the limited series will retain King’s signature horror flairs. Mendelsohn’s character might claim he’s just looking for “facts, evidence, [and] dumb cop shit like that,...

Spike Lee has signed on with Legendary Pictures to direct “Prince of Cats,” based on a graphic novel by Ron Wimberly that transports “Romeo & Juliet” to a 1980s hip-hop setting.
Set in Brooklyn, the violent feud between the Capulets and Montagues is waged with katanas and amid graffiti-stained walls. Along with the backdrop, “Prince of Cats” also changes the story’s focus from the two doomed lovers to Tybalt, Juliet’s rage-fueled cousin who leads the Capulets in their battles and whose bloodthirst leads to his demise.

Lee will rewrite the script with Wimberly and original screenwriter Selwyn Seyfu Hinds. Janet and Kate Zucker of Zucker Productions will produce the film with Legendary’s Jon Silk and Ali Mendes overseeing the project.
Lee won his first Oscar this year for Best Adapted Screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman,” which was also nominated for Best Picture.

Selina Meyers gets no peace from the campaign trail in international waters as Veep Season 7, episode 6, brings her to "Oslo."
This Veep review contains spoilers.
Veep Season 7 Episode 6
Having laid waste to most of the American political climate, Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is off to Europe to sully the good name of the Nobel Peace Prize in Veep season 7, Episode 6, "Oslo." Selina is at the Nobel Summit Awards in Oslo, Norway. She's not exactly getting the Nobel Peace Prize, but a summit award from the world summit of peace laureates, the Nobel Peace Prize Junior.
The Nobel Peace Prize, created by an arms manufacturer, is an almost sacrosanct honor. Luckily nothing is sacred to Veep, which seats murderous dictators at the better tables than Tibetan monks and treats the reception like a flea market for political favors. Lyndon Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, has appeared as a supporting character in many films, including 2016’s Jackie (where was played by John Carroll Lynch), Ava DuVernay’s Selma, which featured Tom Wilkinson in the role, and had more of a main part to play in the HBO movie All the Way, with Bryan Cranston.
Now it’s Johnson’s turn to get the big screen biopic treatment with Rob Reiner’s Lbj. Woody Harrelson, buried under a mountain of makeup, plays Johnson as he becomes vice president to John F. Kennedy (Jeffrey Donovan) and later becomes president after Kennedy is assassinated. Lots of wigs and over-the-top accents follow. Lbj also stars Richard Jenkins, Bill Pullman, Michael Stahl-David, Jeffrey Donovan, Doug McKeon, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Johnson’s wife Lady Bird.

The biopic picks up with Lbj in the wake of President Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963. As the nation mourns, Johnson must contend with longtime adversary Attorney General Bobby Kennedy (Michael Stahl-David) and one-time mentor Georgia Senator Richard Russell (Richard Jenkins) as he seeks to honor JFK’s legacy by championing the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964. Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars as Lbj’s devoted wife Lady Bird.

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress (first chapter here).
Walter had been so busy with midterms that he hadn't gone record-shopping recently. Neither had he spent his income on anything else, other than eating on the weekends, though he'd eaten better than usual. He'd wandered into a fast-food place on Broadway called Amy's and, for the first time in his life, had tried a falafel sandwich. Well, not really a sandwich, at least not as he thought of a sandwich, which was (mostly) meat between two separate pieces of bread, but he didn't know what else to call these things stuffed into pita bread. He'd liked it, not least because just one sandwich was very filling, so he had gone back regularly for lunch on weekends. It was a nice change of pace from the food at John Jay cafeteria. There never seemed to be many customers,...

Among many of Turner's screenplay credits are 1968's Petulia, which earned her a Writers' Guild of America nomination, as well as 1977's The War Between the Tates, which garnered her an Emmy nomination. Well, hello there baby, you look so beautiful," Walton Goggins purrs, leaning forward and suddenly going into full-on loverman mode. "Look at you, all done up in that white dress and those white shoes. This is a proper get-up, my dear. You look hot!" The 44-year-old actor is sitting in a downtown Manhattan restaurant, his face hovering inches away from a plate of Burrata; he was sold on the appetizer after being told it's "like Mozzarella's sexier cousin," so he's now whispering sweet nothings at the cheese with an intensity and seductiveness that's almost frightening.

I bought it for myself, but this was my Christmas present, arriving in the mail from England on Christmas Eve: a fifteen-cd set containing five epic Springsteen concerts from the legendary Darkness on the Edge of Town tour. When the Cleveland deejay who emceed the show for Wmms-fm introduced the band by saying, "Round for round, pound for pound, there ain’t no finer band around," he wasn't just rhyming, he was telling the truth.
Why, you ask, did this set come from England? Well, it's an unauthorized collection of bootlegs, but in Europe, radio recordings are public domain, so this is actually a legal release.
The word went out through the fan network I ordered it on Amazon U.K. before the release date. Perhaps Bruce doesn't get a penny out of this, but I've seen it suggested that writers' royalties would still have to be paid. Either way,...

Jennifer Jason Leigh is at the top of her game, currently onscreen in two acclaimed performances: her Golden Globe-nominated role in The Hateful Eight and in the Charlie Kaufman animated film Anomalisa. Looking back on a career of over 50 films, starting with the 1982 stoner comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Leigh says the first person to really impact her life was her mom, screenwriter Barbara Turner. Turner wrote the script for the 1995 awards contender Georgia, which starred Leigh and earned her nods from several critics groups for her portrayal of a drug-addicted aspiring singer. Kieran, here taking a moment to talk about Mya Taylor’s Independent Spirit Award-nominated performance in Sean Baker’s Tangerine.
Being the calm in a storm is not as easy a dynamic to render on-screen as it looks. That’s what Mya Taylor is tasked with in Tangerine—playing the careful, contemplative counterpoint to Sin-Dee’s (Kitana “Kiki” Rodriguez) turbulent rampage through the streets of East Hollywood. When considering the two performances, both accomplished but in very different keys, I immediately thought of Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Sadie and Mare Winningham’s title character in 1995’s Georgia (previously discussed here). Though both Alexandra and Sin-Dee’s lives aren’t exactly as diametrically opposed as Georgia and Sadie’s, there’s a similar thread of calm vs. irrational running beautifully through both films. Like Winningham, Taylor gifts her film with an unfussy balance of quiet observation and brimming, longstanding frustration. [More...]...

The devil-may-care, rakish charisma of the rough-hewn rockstar Keith Richards is on full display in the brand new Netflix-released documentary, Keith Richards: Under The Influence.
It's an intimate portrait of the biggest rascal in rock 'n' roll history. Originally conceived as a companion video for the release of his new solo album, his first in 23 years, Crosseyed Heart, that project was expanded into an 80-minute history lesson of Keef and his true influences culling incredible archival material, interviews, and studio footage of him recording his new solo album. The craggy-faced Keith with lit cigarette in hand, chuckles and chortles as he regales stories of his love and passion of the blues, country, rock, guitars, musical comrades, and his position in The Greatest Rock Band in History.
Academy-award winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Best of Enemies) does a terrific job of getting Keith to share marvelous stories about meeting...

Since production kicked off, a barrage of set photos have found their way online, spotlighting Frank Grillo’s Crossbones and a regular-sized Paul Rudd. Now, picking up the threads from Ant-Man‘s post-credits scene, a trio of new images have appeared that showcase The Winter Solider himself, Bucky Barnes. A famous blues song, “Corrine, Corrina,” is the subject of a new lawsuit filed in Georgia against Rod Stewart, Universal Music and Capitol Records. The song was written by Armenter "Bo Carter" Chatmon about 1928 — long ago enough that it borders on being in the public domain. Since being recorded, the 12-bar song has become somewhat of a standard with covers by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson and Conor Oberst, among others. Now, the heirs of the Chatmon estate are coming forward with copyright claims against Stewart over his inclusion of the similarly titled "Corrina, Corrina"

Songs On Screen: HitFix recurring feature of tributes by writers to their favorite musical moments from TV and film. Check out all the entries in the series here. There are three great songs from American film, and they are all about rainbows. “Over the Rainbow,” “Moon River” and “The Rainbow Connection” – are the three most quintessentially American songs ever to appear on screen, sung by three quintessentially American characters; and all three stand apart as plaintive cries of lonely souls dreaming of someplace far away..”Waiting round the bend” ”where troubles melt like lemondrops” for “the lovers, the dreamers and me” The things these songs share tell you everything needs to know about the character of 20th Century America. The things they don’t share tell you everything you need to know about how that character changed as the era wore on. Let’s start at the top, and the very top it is.

[Warning: the chapter below contains "adult situations." Seriously, this one's not for the faint-hearted.]
Walter’s new home, Carman Hall, was an utterly soulless pile of cinder blocks. No effort at all had been made, during its design and construction two decades earlier, to build in anything conveying the slightest sense of warmth. No carpeting in either the halls or in the suites, no wood anywhere except the doors, no decorative touches, nothing but bare straight lines. One imagined it had been designed so it could be hosed down with minimum effort between school years to as to be literally as well as aesthetically antiseptic. There was not even any accommodation made for cooking; not only were there no kitchen nooks, even hotplates were forbidden (though, given that they were horrific fire hazards, that made sense,...

It would seem that filming for Captain America: Civil War has headed indoors in Atlanta, Georgia, given the lack of paparazzi set photos lately. However, Robert Downey Jr. posted a non-revealing set photo on Twitter over the weekend which asked fans to choose an allegiance in the superhero battle between Iron Man and Chris Evans' title Super Soldier. Now, Sebastian Stan has followed suit with an Instagram photo which not only offers a closeup look at the actor's Winter Soldier facial hair, but also has "#marvel #civilwar #pickyourside" hashtags. Apparently, Stan tagged Downey in the post, which implies that Bucky will be siding with Tony Stark in Civil War. Rather than announce piecemeal, we'll give you all five lineups in case you'd like more time to catch up with these films (some of them stone cold classics) over the hot months. Remember to cast your own ballots during each month for the reader-polling (your 1979 votes are due by June 4th). Your votes count toward the final Smackdown win so more of you should join in.
These Oscar years were chosen after comment reading, dvd searching, handwringing, and desire-to-watch moods. I wish we had time to squeeze in a dozen Smackdowns each summer! As it is there will be Two Smackdowns in June, a gift to you since this first episode was delayed.
